If your touchscreen does not respond, first check that the device supports touch, then clean and dry the screen and remove anything that could interfere, such as a case, screen protector, gloves, or connected accessory. Restart and test again. If the problem remains, use the instructions for your device below; back up your data before considering a reset, and contact the manufacturer if the screen is damaged or troubleshooting does not restore touch.
Start with the checks that apply to any touchscreen
Confirm the device has a touchscreen
If a Windows laptop has never responded to touch, make sure its exact model includes a touchscreen. ASUS says to search Windows for View pen and touch info. If the result says that no pen or touch input is available for the display, that display does not support touch; it is not a touchscreen fault. See ASUS’s touchscreen troubleshooting guidance.
Inspect, clean, and dry the display
Look for cracks, chips, liquid, or other visible damage. Remove gloves, stickers, cases, screen protectors, and attachments that could interfere with the screen or its sensors. Clean the display and let it dry fully before testing.

Do not let the screen get too wet or spray liquid directly onto it. A soft cloth can help remove dirt; it cannot repair a damaged display or touch sensor. Restart and disconnect accessories
Restart the device, then test touch on the home screen and in more than one app. On most Android phones, Google says holding the power button for about 30 seconds restarts the phone; button combinations vary by model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions if that does not work. For an iPhone or iPad, disconnect Lightning or USB-C accessories and test again. If touch works after disconnecting, Apple recommends trying a different outlet, cable, or charger. Remove the case and screen protector as well, particularly if touch is intermittent or overly sensitive. Apple’s iPhone and iPad screen troubleshooting steps.

Choose the next step by device and symptom

Fix an iPhone or iPad screen that is not responding
After removing accessories, the case, and screen protector, and cleaning and drying the display, restart the device and test again. If touch remains unreliable or does not respond, Apple’s guidance is to seek service rather than continue changing settings. Apple Support.

Troubleshoot an Android phone
Use safe mode to check for an app problem
Safe mode temporarily helps test whether a downloaded app is interfering with touch. The steps for entering it vary by phone, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If touch works in safe mode, Google says a downloaded app is most likely causing the issue. Restart normally, then uninstall recently downloaded apps one at a time, testing after each removal. Check whether a dead zone repeats
To test for a localized problem, drag a finger slowly from the upper-left corner toward the lower-right corner without lifting it. If the gesture repeatedly releases at the same screen location, Google advises contacting the device manufacturer. Turn off Developer options if they are enabled, then test again.
Keep factory reset as a last resort
Google describes factory reset as advanced troubleshooting: it removes data from the phone. Do not use it as an early test. If you decide it is appropriate after other steps fail, back up your data first and follow the device manufacturer’s reset instructions. Google’s Android troubleshooting guide.

Troubleshoot a Windows 10 or Windows 11 touchscreen
Check Windows Update and the touch device
- Restart the PC and test the screen again.
- Check Windows Update and install available updates. Microsoft documents these steps for Windows 11 and Windows 10 in its touchscreen troubleshooting guide.
- Open Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, and find HID-compliant touch screen. If it is disabled, enable it. Microsoft’s instructions are in Enable and disable a touchscreen in Windows.
- Use the PC maker’s instructions for driver updates or reinstalling the touchscreen driver. Depending on the model, its guidance may also cover scanning for hardware changes, BIOS updates, touch setup, or resetting touch calibration to default. Do not assume every PC has a touchscreen or needs calibration. See ASUS’s model-specific troubleshooting steps.
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date concerns support for Windows 10, not whether an individual touchscreen is faulty. Microsoft Support.

Microsoft recommends testing touch in UEFI, the Surface firmware interface, to help distinguish a Windows or driver issue from a likely hardware fault. If touch fails in UEFI, Microsoft says hardware failure is likely and service is the next step. If touch works there, investigate Windows or the touch driver. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for entering UEFI and interpreting the test: How to fix touch issues on your Surface touchscreen.

Microsoft’s Surface steps also cover driver reinstall, Windows and Surface updates, and reset. A keyboard or mouse may be needed for some steps. Do not follow the driver-uninstall step on Surface Pro X: Microsoft warns that restoring its drivers requires a full system reset.
Back up before a reset, and know when to seek service
Factory reset is not a first-line fix. It can erase personal data: Google warns that an Android factory data reset removes phone data, and ASUS advises backing up personal files before resetting a PC. Back up what you need before resetting, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your device.
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the display has visible damage, a dead zone persists, touch fails in Surface UEFI, or the device still does not respond after the applicable troubleshooting steps. Avoid repeatedly changing settings when the results point to a physical fault.
