According to a Shacknews interview with Senior Game Director Richard Albridge, players can access Immortal Empires by purchasing one of four featured Legendary Lords—even without owning the base Total War: WARHAMMER III game. That makes Lords of the End Times more than a content release for existing players: it is also being presented as a way into the series. Check the live store listing for current price, platform availability, and purchase terms.

How the DLC is meant to work as an entry point

Albridge told Shacknews that Creative Assembly saw an opportunity to use the volume of content in Lords of the End Times to help new players into the series. In his words, the release could be “an entry point to Immortal Empires.” The interview says buying one of the DLC’s featured Legendary Lords can provide access to Immortal Empires without buying the base game.

The four Lords named in the interview are Nagash, Thanquol, Glottkin, and Boris Todbringer. This is a specific access claim attributed to Albridge’s interview, not a complete guide to current ownership requirements across every store or platform. Confirm the live listing’s terms before purchasing.

What Lords of the End Times adds—and what is free

The paid DLC and the accompanying free update are separate parts of the release. Creative Assembly’s August 17, 2026 update announcement lists several free changes arriving alongside Lords of the End Times:

  • A major Vampire Counts rework
  • Neferata as a free Legendary Lord
  • New End Game content
  • An overhaul of Victory Conditions
  • Updates to Lores of Magic
  • An overhaul of the Immortal Empires campaign flyby

Those features are part of the free update described by Creative Assembly, not a list of benefits exclusive to purchasing the DLC. For the DLC’s specific paid contents and the offer available on your platform, consult its current store page.

Why the release matters for existing players

For established players, the pitch is a substantial addition to the game’s content. Albridge called it “the biggest DLC we’ve done to date”—the developer’s characterization, rather than a published quantitative comparison. He also described the package as feeling “a little bit like a Warhammer 3.5 or 4” to the team.

Total War: Warhammer II – Blood for the Blood God II [Online Game Code]
  • From the icy peaks of Naggaroth to the arid reaches of the Southlands, each race struggles for dominion. As their conquests grow, the land turns crimson, and rivers run red with the blood of the slain!
  • Blood for The Blood God brings a number of gory, mature-rated effects to Total War: WARHAMMER II

Albridge framed standalone faction DLC as a way to create modular releases alongside full game updates and patching. That points to a possible approach for future content, not a promise that particular DLCs or release schedules will follow.

Which route should a newcomer consider?

If your main goal is to try Immortal Empires, the interview makes one featured Lord a possible route without buying the base game. Choose among Nagash, Thanquol, Glottkin, and Boris Todbringer based on which faction or character interests you, then check the current store terms for your platform.

Buying the base game is the other route to consider if you want the broader base-game package rather than starting with one featured Lord. The available sources do not establish current prices or a complete platform-by-platform ownership matrix, so compare the live store listings before deciding.

What the Immortal Empires scale means

Shacknews reported that Immortal Empires has “100+ Legendary Lord factions” playable after the DLC’s release. Treat that as the count reported by the outlet in its 2026 article, not as an independently audited or guaranteed current total. It does, however, help explain why Creative Assembly is positioning a single featured Lord as a way to begin exploring a much larger offering.

What to verify before buying

  • Whether the listing for your platform says the selected Lord grants Immortal Empires access without the base game.
  • Which content is included in the paid DLC, separately from the free update.
  • The current price, platform availability, and any store-specific purchase conditions.
