Verdict: The Toshiba XG5 1TB (KXG50ZNV1T02) was an efficient, fast PCIe 3.0 OEM SSD in 2017. Its short-transfer performance remains adequate for a modern desktop or game library, but its large SLC cache can collapse during long writes, and the product is now discontinued. Buy one only when the used price is clearly below a new SSD, SMART data is clean, and your system accepts a single-sided M.2 2280 NVMe drive.

What the Toshiba XG5 1TB is

The 1TB model is identified by Toshiba part number KXG50ZNV1T02. It is a single-sided M.2 2280-S2 drive with an M-key connector, PCIe Gen3 x4 interface and NVMe 1.2.1 protocol. Toshiba used 64-layer BiCS 3D TLC NAND in the XG5 series, which also included 256GB and 512GB capacities. The nominal capacity is 1,024GB; the formatted capacity is lower because of file-system overhead and overprovisioning.

Specification XG5 1TB detail

Those headline speeds come from Toshiba’s reference design announcement (Toshiba) and the series brief (Kioxia/Toshiba PDF). They are maximum reference figures, not a guarantee for every laptop-specific XG5.

OEM design changes what you can expect

The XG5 was primarily supplied to computer manufacturers rather than sold as a standardized retail drive. Toshiba allowed OEM customers to tune firmware, power limits and thermal behavior for a particular laptop. Consequently, two drives carrying the XG5 name can behave differently, and a unit removed from an HP, Dell, Lenovo or Acer system may have system-specific firmware.

  • USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 compatible.

Public documentation does not provide a reliable, universal DRAM specification for every XG5 1TB variant. Do not label an unknown board as either DRAM-equipped or DRAM-less solely from a product listing. Likewise, random-IOPS numbers found online may describe a measured sample, an XG5-P model or another OEM configuration rather than the base XG5.

Performance: fast bursts, weak long writes

Historical reviews show why the XG5 can look excellent in a short benchmark yet disappoint during a large copy. Its SLC cache absorbs bursts at close to the advertised write rate. Once that cache is full, data is written to native TLC NAND at a much lower and more variable rate.

Sequential throughput

AnandTech found that low-queue-depth sequential reads scaled more slowly than contemporary Samsung 960 EVO and 960 PRO drives, although the XG5 could deliver very strong short sequential writes. In longer sequential-write testing, throughput eventually fell to roughly SATA-like levels after the cache was exhausted (AnandTech results).

Mixed and steady-state workloads

Mixed workloads were less impressive than the best PCIe 3.0 Samsung drives. Tom’s Hardware nevertheless found good steady-state sequential and random-write consistency compared with many TLC competitors, while its extended PCMark 8 testing showed variability (Tom’s Hardware results).

What that means in practice

  • Booting and applications: Responsive on a PCIe 3.0 system; latency and software behavior matter more than peak sequential numbers.
  • Gaming: Adequate for game storage. Do not expect a meaningful loading-time advantage over a good modern PCIe 3.0 SSD.
  • Short file transfers: Usually fast while the SLC cache has room.
  • Large transfers, video work and disk images: More likely to expose the post-cache slowdown.
  • Laptops: Relatively low power use was a historical strength, but actual behavior depends on the laptop’s firmware, cooling and power limits.

Compatibility checklist for a modern system

The drive is electrically compatible with newer PCIe generations, but it negotiates at Gen3-class speed. Check every item before buying:

  • Your slot must be an M.2 M-key NVMe slot; an M.2 SATA-only slot will not work.
  • The bay must support the 2280 length and provide a screw or retention mechanism.
  • The motherboard or laptop must route PCIe lanes to that slot.
  • Thin laptops may require a single-sided module, which is an advantage for the XG5, but heatsinks and brackets still need clearance.
  • Some OEM systems whitelist storage devices or impose BIOS-specific restrictions.
  • Older computers may need a BIOS update for NVMe boot support.
  • For cloning, keep the system in UEFI mode, verify NVMe boot support and save recovery keys if device encryption is enabled.

Confirm the slot and physical requirements against the manufacturer’s manual and the XG5 series brief (official specifications).

How to inspect a used XG5 before purchase

Since Kioxia marks the series End of Sales, most units now come from used or open-box listings. Marketplace asking prices observed in 2026 included roughly $100–$120 for 1TB examples, with some listings higher; these are not completed-sale data.

  1. Match the label to KXG50ZNV1T02. Do not confuse XG5 with XG5-P, XG6, XG7 or another Kioxia OEM model.
  2. Request a current SMART screenshot from CrystalDiskInfo, smartmontools or an equivalent NVMe utility.
  3. Check total host writes and reads, percentage used or remaining life, unsafe shutdowns, media/data-integrity errors and controller temperature.
  4. Ask for confirmation that the drive links at the expected PCIe width and speed.
  5. Prefer a seller with a return window and avoid stock-photo listings or claims of transferable retail warranty.
  6. Require secure erasure before reuse. A “tested” drive may still contain recoverable data if it was not erased.

Observed examples include an eBay listing around $100 (individual listing) and category listings ranging higher (eBay category). At approximately $100 used, the XG5 competes directly with newer warrantied products.

Endurance, firmware and warranty cautions

Toshiba marketed the XG5 as an OEM client drive. There is no single universal TBW figure or consumer warranty policy that can safely be applied to every 1TB unit. Warranty rights may belong to the original system manufacturer and may not transfer with a drive removed from a laptop. Judge a used unit by its SMART history and seller protection rather than an assumed endurance rating.

Current Toshiba or Kioxia utilities may not recognize every OEM firmware variant. Generic NVMe health tools and the original laptop manufacturer’s support page are the practical fallbacks.

New PCIe 4.0 TLC SSD

A current PCIe 4.0 TLC drive generally offers higher throughput, newer firmware, clearer endurance specifications and a real retail warranty. In a PCIe 3.0-only laptop it will normally run at the older link speed, so the benefit is support and condition rather than full Gen4 performance.

Samsung 990 EVO Plus 1TB

Samsung lists up to 7,150 MB/s reads and 6,300 MB/s writes for its 1TB 990 EVO Plus. Its US product page showed a direct price of $289.99 and an out-of-stock status when captured, while Samsung’s December 2025 MSRP file listed $154.99; neither figure should be treated as a universal street price (Samsung product page; MSRP document).

Used PCIe 3.0 drives

A used Samsung 970 EVO Plus, WD Blue SN570/SN580 or similar model may be preferable when its exact identity and SMART history are documented, its price is lower, and firmware support is easier. Do not assume a performance ranking without comparable testing.

Who should buy the XG5?

  • Good fit: a PCIe 3.0 laptop needing an inexpensive, single-sided 2280 replacement; an existing XG5 with clean SMART data; ordinary office work, applications or gaming.
  • Conditional fit: a desktop owner who accepts used-drive risk and buys substantially below new-drive pricing.
  • Skip it: when the seller provides no health data, the price approaches a new SSD, the workload involves frequent multi-hundred-gigabyte writes, or a manufacturer warranty matters.

The XG5 remains technically competent for its generation, but its value is now determined by the individual unit’s health, compatibility and price—not by its 2017 benchmark reputation.
