The Toshiba ML-EC42P(SS) can cover the jobs of a standard microwave and some countertop convection or air-fry tasks, but it is a bigger, more complicated appliance than a basic microwave. Its manual rates the microwave at 1,000 W and lists 1.5 cu. ft. of capacity. Independent testing by RTINGS measured a smaller chamber, 1.17 cu. ft., and described the controls as a source of friction. Whether it works in your kitchen depends mainly on counter space, the size of the dishes you cook in, and how much you mind a membrane control panel.
What the manual documents
The Toshiba ML-EC42P(SS) is a countertop combination microwave oven. The Toshiba instruction manual (2021 edition) lists these cooking functions: microwave cooking, convection cooking, microwave-plus-convection combination cooking, air fry, sensor cook and reheat, defrost, and warm hold. The stainless-steel (SS) finish is the variant named in the model number; the same manual is the source for every specification below.
| Item | Manual-listed value (Toshiba, 2021 manual) |
|---|---|
| Power supply | 120 V, 60 Hz |
| Microwave output (rated) | 1,000 W |
| Microwave input | 1,500 W |
| Convection input | 1,750 W |
| Listed capacity | 1.5 cu. ft. |
| Exterior dimensions | 21.77 × 21.5 × 12.99 inches (about 55.3 × 54.6 × 33.0 cm) |
| Approximate net weight | 45.5 lb (about 20.6 kg) |
| Warranty | One-year limited warranty from date of purchase, for the original retail purchaser, subject to the manual’s exclusions and terms |
The manual’s dimension line does not label which number is width, depth or height, so confirm orientation against the installation instructions before you measure your counter.

The 1.5 cu. ft. figure is Toshiba’s listed capacity. RTINGS measured the usable chamber at 1.17 cu. ft. on its test page, accessed October 7, 2026. These are two different measurements, made by different parties, and the gap is roughly 22%. Use the measured figure when you are judging whether a casserole dish, a large plate or a whole chicken will fit. The advertised figure is useful for comparing with other ovens only if every brand is measured the same way.

Cooking modes, explained
Most of the ML-EC42P’s value comes from being several appliances in one. Each mode does something different, and the differences matter when you are deciding whether it can replace a second device.
Microwave
Standard microwave cooking at the rated 1,000 W output. This is the mode most people will use for reheating, defrosting and quick cooking, and it is the mode where the 1,500 W input figure applies.
Convection
Heating by the oven’s convection element, without microwaves. The convection input is 1,750 W, which is higher than the microwave input. Convection is the mode to use for baking-style cooking and for browning food that microwaves alone do not brown.

Both systems run together. The manual lists this as a separate mode, which is the main reason the unit is positioned as a substitute for a microwave and a countertop oven at once.

Air fry
The manual lists an air fry function, and RTINGS describes the unit as a microwave, oven and air fryer. Neither source gives cooking times, batch sizes or results for specific foods, so treat air fry as a documented feature rather than a proven replacement for a dedicated basket air fryer. If your main use is crisping frozen snacks in small batches, test the chamber size against your usual quantities first.
Sensor cook and reheat
Sensor functions adjust cooking based on detected steam from the food. RTINGS lists a steam sensor among the unit’s advantages. The manual is the source for the function’s existence; the review is the source for how it was judged in use.
Defrost and warm hold
Defrost and warm hold are listed in the manual as standard functions. The manual excerpt does not give defrost weights or warm-hold temperatures used in this article, so check your own manual for those values before relying on them.

What independent testing found
RTINGS characterizes the model as a medium-sized, mid-range microwave, oven and air fryer. Its published strengths and weaknesses are:
Rank #3
- 4-in-1 Multifunctional Countertop Microwave One microwave with multi-functions of microwave, air fry, convection, combination cooking (microwave plus convection) can fulfill more usages.

- Large Capacity for a Family Size 13.6inch removable turntable can fit a whole roasted chicken, 12-inch pizza
- Stylish Appearance: Black Stainless steel finish with easy to clean stainless steel interior.
- Heating speed: RTINGS lists quick heating as a pro. Its comparison notes that the Toshiba heats faster than the Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1.
- Sensor and mute: A steam sensor and mute controls are listed as pros.
- Size: The design is listed as bulky, which is the main physical drawback.
- Control panel: The membrane touch panel gives limited feedback, so it is not always clear that a press has registered.
- Power adjustment: Changing to 50% power takes multiple button presses, which makes a common adjustment slower than it should be.
These are RTINGS findings from its own testing and judgment. They are not Toshiba’s claims, and they describe one reviewer’s experience with one unit.
Footprint, weight and electrical needs
At 45.5 lb and about 55 × 55 × 33 cm (as listed), the unit is a heavy, substantial countertop appliance, not a small add-on. Plan for it before you buy:
- Measure the actual clearance above and behind the unit, not only the footprint. Check the installation instructions for ventilation requirements.
- Confirm the counter can hold roughly 20 kg, and that you can lift it safely with another person if you need to move it.
- Plan the outlet. At 120 V, a 1,750 W convection input draws about 14.6 A, so the outlet should be on a circuit that can carry that load alongside other appliances.
How it compares with other ovens
RTINGS compares the Toshiba with three other models. Its comparison notes are below. Where RTINGS did not give a value, the cell reads “not stated.”
| Model | RTINGS comparison with the Toshiba | Controls | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panasonic NN-CD66NS | Smaller capacity than the Toshiba | Physical buttons and dials | Smaller than the Toshiba (exact value not stated) |
| Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 | Easier to use; the Toshiba heats faster and has a larger chamber | Easier to use than the Toshiba (exact layout not stated) | Smaller chamber than the Toshiba (exact value not stated) |
| GE JES1109RRSS | Compared with the Toshiba; specific findings not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
If you are comparing models yourself, use the same checklist for each: external footprint and clearance, usable chamber size and turntable diameter, heating speed, control feedback, sensor features, the modes you actually use, and the typical size of your dishes. Price and availability change often, so check them at the point of sale.

Is it a microwave replacement for your kitchen?
The ML-EC42P works best for a buyer who wants one appliance that covers reheating, convection baking and some air-frying, and who has the counter room and the outlet to support it. It is a weaker choice if:
- You cook large dishes that must fit a chamber near 1.17 cu. ft. Measure your largest pan first.
- You often change power levels mid-cook and want tactile buttons or dials.
- Your counter depth or clearance is tight, since the unit is listed as bulky.
- You need a dedicated air fryer for large batches of fried food.
Safety instructions from the manual
The manual states: “Do not attempt to operate this oven with the door open since open door operation can result in harmful exposure to microwave energy.” It also warns against defeating or tampering with the safety interlocks, says not to operate a damaged oven, and states that the oven should be adjusted or repaired only by properly qualified service personnel. If the door, seal or interlocks appear damaged, stop using the unit and contact qualified service support.

Bottom line on the ML-EC42P
The Toshiba ML-EC42P(SS) is a documented combination microwave with convection, combination, air-fry and sensor functions. It rates 1,000 W for the microwave and lists 1.5 cu. ft. of capacity, though RTINGS measured 1.17 cu. ft. It is bulky and heavy, and its panel asks more of you than a set of physical dials. For a counter with room to spare and a family whose dishes fit its chamber, it can replace a microwave and some countertop oven use. For a small kitchen or large-batch air frying, one of the alternatives is the better fit.
