The Toshiba MG03SCA family is a discontinued line of 7,200-rpm, dual-port SAS-2.0 enterprise hard drives in capacities from 1 TB to 4 TB. MG03SCA400 is the 4 TB model—not a SATA drive. It may suit a server or storage array that explicitly supports SAS drives and the model’s sector format, but an old or used unit needs careful compatibility and condition checks before purchase.
What is the Toshiba MG03SCAx00?
MG03SCAx00 is the model-family name for Toshiba’s 3.5-inch Enterprise Capacity SAS HDDs. The archived Toshiba product overview lists four capacities:
| Model | Capacity |
|---|---|
| MG03SCA400 | 4 TB |
| MG03SCA300 | 3 TB |
| MG03SCA200 | 2 TB |
| MG03SCA100 | 1 TB |
Toshiba specifies a 3.5-inch form factor and 26.1 mm height. The company notes that “3.5-inch” is a form-factor designation, not the drive’s exact physical dimensions. Its stated capacity uses decimal TB, so an operating system displaying binary units will report a lower figure. Toshiba marks the product family “End of Sales,” meaning it is a legacy product rather than a current offering. Toshiba MG03SCA product overview.

The MG03SCA is a 7,200-rpm mechanical drive with dual-port SAS-2.0 connectivity. Toshiba lists supported link rates of 6.0, 3.0, and 1.5 Gbit/s, a 64 MiB buffer, 4.17 ms average latency, and logical block lengths from 512 to 528 bytes. For sustained data transfer, Toshiba specifies 165 MiB/s for the 4 TB MG03SCA400 and 155 MiB/s for the 1 TB, 2 TB, and 3 TB models.

Those throughput figures are vendor specifications, not independent benchmark results or guaranteed speeds in a particular server. Toshiba cautions that read and write speed can vary with the host device, operating conditions, and file size. StorageReview’s historical coverage describes the MG03 SAS line as a 7,200-rpm, up-to-4-TB, 6 Gb/s generation and discusses changes from its predecessor; those historical comparisons should not be mistaken for results from testing an individual drive. Is the MG03SCA400 SAS or SATA?
The MG03SCA400 is SAS: Toshiba identifies the series as dual-port SAS-2.0. It is not a SATA drive. A SAS drive generally requires a SAS-capable controller and compatible backplane or cabling; a SATA-only host should not be assumed to support it. Confirm the exact server, controller, and backplane documentation before buying.

Will this drive work in your server?
Physical fit alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Check the following against the server, RAID controller, HBA, or storage-array documentation and the exact drive listing:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Interface: Confirm the host supports SAS drives. The MG03SCA has dual-port SAS-2.0 and can link at 6.0, 3.0, or 1.5 Gbit/s, but system support depends on the actual controller and backplane.
- Drive bay and connection: Verify that the bay accepts a 3.5-inch drive of this height and that the backplane or cable provides a compatible SAS connection.
- Sector format: Toshiba lists logical block lengths of 512–528 bytes. Check whether the controller, operating system, and intended array support the format of the specific unit being sold.
- Capacity and array rules: Confirm the server or controller can address the drive’s capacity and that its RAID or storage configuration permits mixing it with existing disks. Do not assume that matching the interface is sufficient.
- Operating requirements: Toshiba specifies up to 11.3 W during read/write and 6.0 W typical low-power idle. Check the system’s power and cooling allowance.
Later Toshiba enterprise drives may offer newer interfaces or larger capacities, but their presence in a current catalog does not establish compatibility with an older SAS environment. Toshiba’s current enterprise-capacity page and 2023 catalog provide context on later products, not a compatibility guarantee for a particular system. Reliability: what Toshiba’s ratings do—and do not—mean
Toshiba rates the series for 24×7 operation. Its 2018 product overview lists an MTTF of 1,200,000 hours and 10 non-recoverable errors per 1016 bits read. These are manufacturer ratings, not a promise that a particular drive will last for a stated number of years. MTTF is not a remaining-life estimate for a used unit, and the published figures do not establish the health of a drive offered for sale.
The reviewed sources do not establish an independent population-level failure rate for MG03SCA drives. For a used unit, assess its actual condition rather than using the manufacturer’s MTTF rating as a prediction. Ask for a recent health report and power-on information where available, verify that the serial number and model match the listing, and favor a seller with clear return terms.

MG03SCA vs. MG03SCP: the encryption distinction
MG03SCA and MG03SCP are not interchangeable names for the same security configuration. Toshiba’s 2012 announcement describes MG03SCP SAS variants as TCG-Enterprise SSC drives with encryption and cryptographic erase. It separately identifies MG03SCA400 as a non-encryption SAS product with a system-directed overwrite function for data disposal. If encryption or drive-level key management is a requirement, verify the exact model suffix and security features rather than relying on the shared MG03 family name. Toshiba’s 2012 MG03 announcement.

Is a used MG03SCA worth buying?
It can be a reasonable fit when you need an inexpensive replacement or additional disk for a verified SAS-compatible system, and the specific unit’s health, price, and return terms make sense. Toshiba’s end-of-sales designation means current listings are resale stock; the product specifications do not establish present availability or a fair current price.

- Dell P/N: 1MVTT
Before buying, evaluate the listing rather than the family’s original rating:
- Confirm the full model number, capacity, and SAS interface from the label or seller documentation.
- Check that the drive’s logical block format is supported by your host and array.
- Request available health information, including error status and operating history, and clarify whether the drive is used, refurbished, or untested.
- Read the warranty and return policy, including who pays return shipping and how quickly a defective unit must be reported.
- Compare the seller’s price and risk with a later-generation drive that your system can actually use; a newer model may differ in interface, sector format, power, workload rating, and capacity.
There is no universal value verdict without a specific listing and deployment. A low price does not offset an incompatible SAS host or an unverified drive condition.
Verdict
The MG03SCA is a clearly specified legacy enterprise SAS family, with 1–4 TB capacities, 7,200-rpm mechanics, and dual-port SAS-2.0. The 4 TB MG03SCA400 may be useful in compatible older infrastructure, but it is not SATA, its quoted speeds and reliability figures are Toshiba specifications, and the family is end of sales. Treat a used purchase as a compatibility-and-condition decision, not as a guarantee implied by the original enterprise rating.
