Short answer: the 2015 Toshiba Chromebook 2 CB35 was a well-liked budget laptop in its day, with a sharp 13.3-inch Full HD IPS display, comfortable keyboard and excellent results in its original battery test. It is not a sensible primary Chromebook in 2026 because Google lists its automatic-update end date as June 2021. It can still serve a low-risk, offline or narrowly defined purpose, but buyers should treat it as legacy hardware rather than a secure current computer.
What the 2015 Chromebook 2 actually is
The model covered here is Toshiba’s 2015 Chromebook 2 CB35 generation reviewed by Laptop Mag. Its core configuration is an Intel Celeron 3215U processor, 4GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 13.3-inch 1,920 × 1,080 IPS display. The chassis measures 12.6 × 8.4 × 0.76 inches and weighs 2.97 pounds.
Ports include HDMI, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and an SD-card reader. Charging uses a proprietary power connector, so a used unit needs its correct charger or a verified compatible replacement.

| Area | Historical result | What it means now |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | 10 hours 5 minutes in Laptop Mag’s Wi-Fi web-surfing test at 100 nits | A strong result when new; an old battery may deliver substantially less |
| Display brightness | 378 nits average | Bright for a budget Chromebook of its period |
| Color gamut | 109.8% sRGB | Wide coverage by contemporary budget-laptop standards |
| Color accuracy | 0.87 Delta-E (lower is better) | Very accurate in the published test |
| Launch price | $330 in 2015 | Historical context, not a current used-market valuation |
Display and keyboard
The 1080p IPS panel was the machine’s clearest advantage. Laptop Mag praised its image quality, measured brightness and color performance. The keyboard was another strength, making the CB35 pleasant for schoolwork, writing and routine web use.
Battery life
Laptop Mag recorded 10 hours 5 minutes, exceeding the manufacturer’s 8-hour-30-minute claim in that test. Because the computer is now more than a decade old, that figure should not be used as a battery-health promise for a second-hand unit.

Audio and speed
The review found weak speaker lows and mids, so headphones or external speakers are preferable for video and music. The Celeron 3215U and 4GB of RAM were designed for basic ChromeOS work, not demanding multitasking. WIRED’s report of lag when switching among six or seven tabs and stuttering in some WebGL demos applies to the earlier N2840 CB35-B3340, not automatically to this 2015 configuration.
Henry T. Casey’s period verdict was: “Those looking for a 13-inch notebook built to surf the Web and take advantage of Google’s apps should definitely consider the Toshiba Chromebook 2 CB35 ($330).” That recommendation made sense at launch, before the device’s support window closed.

Software support ended in June 2021
Google’s Auto Update policy lists “Chromebook 2 (2015 Edition)” through June 2021. That date has passed. Google explains in its guide to using or upgrading an old Chromebook that an older Chromebook may continue to work after updates stop, but it will not receive further software updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis is the deciding fact for a current purchase. The CB35 should not be presented as a secure, fully supported Chromebook, and the available evidence does not establish that current applications, websites or sensitive-account workflows will continue to function reliably. Avoid using an out-of-update machine for banking, work credentials, health records or other high-risk accounts.

Who should—and should not—buy one
A reasonable use case
- You already own one and need a simple secondary computer for low-risk browsing, local documents or offline tasks.
- You understand that ChromeOS updates have ended and can accept compatibility limitations.
- The purchase price is low enough that a battery or charger problem would not be a major loss.
Reasons to pass
- You need current security updates, modern web-app compatibility or dependable support.
- You plan to manage sensitive accounts, confidential files or a child’s primary school workload.
- The seller cannot verify the exact model, battery condition, charger or return policy.
Used-buying checklist
- Verify the label: confirm the 2015 CB35 configuration rather than the earlier CB35-B3340.
- Check the screen: look for cracks, pressure marks, dead pixels and uneven backlighting.
- Test input devices: press every key and verify the trackpad, hinge and webcam.
- Assess the battery: ask how long it lasts away from the charger; the 2015 laboratory result does not describe today’s battery.
- Confirm charging: make sure the proprietary connector and included adapter work correctly.
- Inspect ports: test both USB ports, HDMI and the SD-card reader if those features matter to you.
- Get return protection: prefer a seller with a clearly stated return window, since current used prices and availability vary.
How to compare it with another Chromebook
Do not compare only screen size or the original $330 price. Evaluate these points in order:
- Update end date: a currently supported Chromebook is usually the better value even with a less impressive panel.
- Screen: check resolution and panel type; the CB35’s 1080p IPS display remains a hardware highlight.
- Performance: compare processor generation and RAM for the number of tabs and apps you actually use.
- Battery condition: require a present-day estimate from the seller rather than relying on the 2015 test.
- Ports and charger: include adapter replacement risk in the total cost.
- Total price: compare the used CB35 with a supported alternative, not with its launch price.
Bottom line
The 2015 Toshiba Chromebook 2 CB35 was a strong budget design for its era: its 1080p IPS screen, keyboard and tested battery life stood out, while the speakers and low-power hardware were compromises. In 2026, however, Google’s June 2021 update cutoff outweighs those strengths for most buyers. Buy only for a clearly limited, low-risk purpose and only after verifying the exact model and physical condition.
