On 29 January 2002, Toshiba Corporation and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. announced a display joint venture intended to combine their LCD and OLED operations and broaden where those technologies could be used. Toshiba was to hold 60% of the new company, Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd., and Matsushita 40%; operations were scheduled to begin on 1 April 2002.

What the companies announced

The new company was to take responsibility for the partners’ LCD and OLED businesses from development through manufacturing and sales. Toshiba’s announcement listed capital of 10 billion yen. The scope included several display types rather than a single LCD product line:

  • Low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCDs
  • Amorphous TFT LCDs
  • STN LCDs
  • OLEDs

Contemporary Japanese reporting described a planned workforce of 2,900 employees and projected approximately 340 billion yen in sales for fiscal 2002. That figure was a plan, not verified revenue. Toshiba’s 29 January 2002 announcement and PC Watch’s contemporaneous report document the arrangement and reported plans.

Why combine the display businesses?

The companies’ stated aim was to bring together complementary capabilities and pursue new applications, rather than merely increase display output. Toshiba’s October 2001 announcement described a strategy of joining their LCD and next-generation display businesses, combining manufacturing and technology strengths, and developing opportunities such as LCD televisions and Internet appliances.

Toshiba summarized one intended result this way: “The new company will expand LCD applications by realizing system-on-glass technology.” The quote appeared in Toshiba’s official joint announcement of 17 October 2001. It expressed a goal, not proof that the technology or broader applications were subsequently achieved.

How the partners’ LCD capabilities differed

Toshiba’s fiscal 2002 annual report later described the technical rationale in terms of complementary strengths:

What system-on-glass meant in this strategy

System-on-glass (SOG) refers to integrating electronic circuitry or functions onto the same glass substrate as a display, rather than relying entirely on separate components. Toshiba presented SOG as a way to help extend LCD use into products and applications such as Internet appliances. In the announcement, it was a technology objective for the venture—not an announced completed capability or a quantified performance promise.

What the forecasts do—and do not—show

Toshiba’s October 2001 announcement cited expected annual LCD market growth of 17%. This was a dated corporate forecast, not a current market statistic or a measured result. Likewise, the approximately 340 billion yen sales figure reported for fiscal 2002 described a plan; the cited announcement and contemporary report do not establish realized sales or confirm that every target was met.

The available announcements explain the venture’s intended structure, scope and rationale. They do not establish its present-day status.
