Toronto’s 2026 municipal election sign period began October 1, 25 days before election day on October 26. Candidates and their campaigns can now display signs, but placement depends on consent, location and spacing rules—and signs must be removed within 72 hours after voting ends.
Where Toronto election signs can be placed
The rules differ depending on whether a sign is on private property or a public road allowance. Toronto’s Election Signs guidance sets out the restrictions; the City also announced the October 1 start date in its September 29, 2026 release.
Private property
A sign on a lawn or fence requires the consent of the property owner or occupant. If you are a resident considering a sign, ask before installing it; being a supporter does not replace the required permission.
Public road allowances
Signs may be placed in permitted public-road-allowance locations, but the rules include consent from the owner or occupant of the abutting property, setbacks from roads and sidewalks, and exclusions near certain public places. Signs must generally be at least one metre apart unless the appropriate property owner or occupant consents to closer spacing.

- Keep signs at least 1.5 metres from a curb or pavement edge.
- Keep signs at least 0.6 metres from either side of a sidewalk.
- Do not place signs within 15 metres of an intersection or pedestrian crossover of a collector or arterial road.
- Do not place signs on medians or islands, or adjacent to a voting place, City park or City-operated facility. Other restrictions apply at local-road intersections.
These setbacks do not override the other restrictions: a spot that meets a distance requirement may still be prohibited for another reason.
Size, height and other sign restrictions
For ordinary election signs, Toronto’s general limits are a maximum area of 1.2 square metres and a maximum height of two metres above ground. The City lists exceptions for certain designated advertising spaces and for indoor, window and balcony displays; check its guidance for the conditions that apply to those exceptions.

How to report a sign that may break the rules
Toronto’s sign guidance says residents can report a bylaw concern by contacting 311 and submitting a service request. The City’s instructions ask for the sign’s location and the reason for the complaint. Check the live City guidance for current reporting instructions.

Where residents can get a campaign sign
Toronto’s election guidance raises “where can I get a lawn sign?” as a question for candidates and campaigns. The City does not say it distributes campaign signs. Supporters should contact the candidate or campaign they want to support, then get the property owner’s or occupant’s consent before putting a sign on private property.
