The TOPPING DX9 Discrete is a premium desktop DAC and headphone amplifier that can also serve as a preamp for an amplifier or active speakers. Its appeal is flexibility: it offers a wide range of digital inputs and headphone connections, plus ten-band parametric EQ and crossfeed. Whether it suits you depends on your source connections, headphones and downstream system—not on headline power or format numbers alone.
What the DX9 Discrete is—and who it suits
TOPPING describes the DX9 Discrete as a fully balanced 1-bit DAC and headphone amplifier using PSRM architecture, a six-channel discrete NFCA amplifier and hybrid relay volume control. What Hi-Fi also describes preamplifier use. It is a desktop component, not a portable dongle.
It is worth considering if you want one desktop unit to handle several digital sources, drive wired headphones and feed a separate amplifier or active speakers. It is less compelling if you need only a basic DAC/amp, do not need its input variety or DSP, or want a buying decision grounded in independent measurements and listening tests: those have not been established for this model here.

Connections and format support
What Hi-Fi reports asynchronous USB, two optical and two coaxial inputs, plus AES and IIS-LVDS (I²S). It lists 4.4 mm, 4-pin XLR and 6.35 mm headphone outputs, alongside balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs for an amplifier or active speakers. Confirm the current manual for exact connector details and compatibility before purchase.

These ceilings matter only if the source and connection can use them. For ordinary playback, check that the DX9 Discrete has the input your device actually provides and that its outputs match the next component. A high supported sample rate is not evidence that music will sound better.

Headphone power: useful context, not a compatibility guarantee
TOPPING Store lists balanced output at 7,080 mW ×2 into 32 ohms. What Hi-Fi reports 7,080 mW per channel into 32 ohms and 10,000 mW per channel into 16 ohms, as well as a noise floor below 0.5 μVrms. These are published figures, not independent measurements established here. TOPPING Store also lists a 131 dB DNR figure; that, too, is a seller/manufacturer claim rather than an independently verified result.
Output power alone cannot tell you whether an amplifier is a good match for a particular headphone. Impedance is only part of the picture; sensitivity, desired listening level and noise with sensitive earphones also matter. The published figures do not establish universal headphone compatibility, especially for sensitive in-ear monitors. If matching is close to the edge of your needs, look for reliable measurements under comparable conditions rather than treating the headline numbers as a guarantee.

PEQ, crossfeed and Bluetooth
The DX9 Discrete includes ten-band parametric EQ (PEQ) and crossfeed. TOPPING Tune software can be used to configure profiles, according to the available product coverage. PEQ can make frequency-response adjustments, while crossfeed changes how left- and right-channel information is presented; these are practical features for listeners who want to shape playback rather than rely solely on a headphone’s stock response.
TOPPING Store describes Bluetooth 5.1 with LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, AAC and SBC. If a specific codec is essential, verify it against the current manual and the specifications of the transmitting device: codec availability depends on the source as well as the receiver.

Sample-rate display and computer setup
TOPPING’s FAQ says the DX9 Discrete displays the rate of the incoming signal. A computer or player may resample audio before sending it, so the number shown on the unit does not necessarily represent the file’s original rate. Where available, exclusive-mode playback can help avoid host resampling when preserving the original rate is the goal. TOPPING names Audirvana for Mac OS and Foobar for Windows as software suggestions; this is manufacturer guidance, not an independent software evaluation.
If USB is not recognized
- TOPPING recommends a USB cable shorter than 1.5 meters. This is troubleshooting advice, not evidence that a special cable is required.
- Try another USB port and cable, and avoid a hub while diagnosing recognition problems.
- Some phones require OTG to be enabled for USB audio.
For firmware, TOPPING says to use firmware for the exact model and to extract the official firmware package before upgrading. Do not cross-flash firmware intended for another model.

DX9 Discrete versus the original DX9 or separate components
TechRadar identifies PSRM architecture and ten-band PEQ as key changes in the Discrete relative to its predecessor. The available evidence does not establish a controlled comparison of sound, reliability, measured performance or value against the original DX9, so it does not support calling the Discrete an upgrade for every owner.
When comparing it with the original DX9, a less expensive integrated DAC/amp or separate DAC and amplifier, check the factors that affect your own system:
- Current price, stock, warranty, shipping, taxes and return terms in your region.
- Required digital inputs, output types and headphone connectors.
- Whether your source chain can use the input-specific format ceilings.
- Headphone impedance and sensitivity, alongside listening level and credible output measurements.
- Whether PEQ, profile management and crossfeed fit your workflow.
- Whether you prefer one desktop unit or separate components, and what independent testing is available for the options.
Price and buying checks
At access in 2026, TOPPING Store listed the DX9 Discrete at US$1,299. What Hi-Fi and TechRadar reported £1,299 as UK launch pricing in 2026.
