The Topping DX5 II is a desktop DAC, headphone amplifier and variable-level preamp in one unit. Its broad inputs and outputs make it a flexible hub for a computer, digital sources, Bluetooth audio, headphones and powered speakers. Its strongest practical distinction is the much higher rated output from its balanced headphone jacks than from its single-ended jack; whether that matters depends on your headphone’s wiring and needs.
This review separates TOPPING’s specifications from independent listening impressions. The numerical output figures below are manufacturer-stated laboratory results, not independent measurements, and listening observations are attributed to the reviewer who made them.
What the DX5 II does—and who it suits
The DX5 II combines three roles: it converts digital audio to analog, amplifies headphones, and can act as a variable-level preamp for active speakers or a separate power amplifier. TOPPING lists dual ES9039Q2M DAC chips, Bluetooth 5.1 with LDAC, ten-band parametric EQ (PEQ), and a preamp mode that controls output volume through TOPPING HOME’s web interface. TOPPING’s product page describes these features.
It is a plausible fit if you want several source options and both headphone and speaker connectivity on a desktop. It is less compelling to buy solely for a headline power number or a high-resolution format label: headphone matching depends on more than impedance, and format compatibility does not establish an audible improvement.

Inputs, outputs and supported formats
The manual lists USB, optical, coaxial and Bluetooth inputs. Outputs include RCA and XLR line connections, plus 6.35 mm single-ended, 4.4 mm balanced and 4-pin XLR headphone jacks. This gives you several routes to connect a computer or digital source, use headphones, and send a variable-level signal to powered speakers or a power amplifier. The official manual provides the connection and format specifications.

These are compatibility limits, not evidence that a recording or playback chain will sound better at the highest listed sample rate. PEQ support also has format limits that vary by input, so check the manual against the source and format you plan to use.
How much headphone power does it provide?
TOPPING’s manual labels the following figures for USB input at 96 kHz. It says tests were conducted in its laboratory under AC220V, 50Hz, and rates power per channel at THD+N below 1%. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent bench measurements. The balanced figures apply to the 4.4 mm and 4-pin XLR outputs; the 6.35 mm figures are single-ended.

The balanced output has higher rated power at each listed load, but it is not automatically the better connection for every headphone. Match the connector wiring as well as impedance and sensitivity, and consider how loudly you listen. Impedance alone does not tell you how much power a headphone needs. A maximum rating is not a promise of a particular listening level with every headphone.
The manual also states output impedance below 0.1 Ω, low-gain noise below 1.1 µVrms single-ended and below 1.6 µVrms balanced, and a 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response of ±0.3 dB. At 1 kHz, it gives signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range as 131 dB single-ended and 133 dB balanced. These, too, are TOPPING’s stated figures rather than independent results.
Balanced versus single-ended: choose the cable carefully
The 6.35 mm socket is single-ended; 4.4 mm and 4-pin XLR are balanced outputs. To use a balanced output, the headphone cable must have the corresponding balanced wiring and plug. A balanced jack is not a general-purpose adapter point for headphones wired single-ended.

- Do not connect a balanced output to a single-ended headphone plug using a 4.4-to-3.5 mm, 4.4-to-6.35 mm or 4-pin XLR-to-single-ended adapter. TOPPING support explicitly advises against balanced-to-single-ended adapters and cables.
- Fully seat the correct plug. Pause playback before plugging in or unplugging headphones; TOPPING’s support guidance warns against changing headphone connections while audio is playing.
- Use normal listening volume. TOPPING notes that excessive volume or an abnormal headphone load may trigger thermal protection.
A 6.35 mm-to-3.5 mm adapter is a different, single-ended connector conversion. TOPPING lists one among the included items, but package contents may vary by region or product revision, so check the box contents before buying an extra.
Using PEQ and software
TOPPING describes ten-band PEQ with frequency, gain and bandwidth adjustment, controlled through the TOPPING HOME web interface. TechRadar’s review also reports that Topping Tune software supports profiles and target curves. Its review page initially described Windows availability and later noted Mac availability, so platform support can change; check the current software and firmware information for your operating system and product revision before relying on a particular control method. TechRadar’s review covers its software experience.
If PEQ introduces distortion, TOPPING advises reducing preamp gain gradually. That is a troubleshooting step, not evidence that all units or settings produce distortion.

How it sounds, according to an independent reviewer
TechRadar’s November 8, 2025 review describes the DX5 II as detailed and dynamic, while noting a hint of brightness in the treble and some sensitivity to headphone and system pairing. For headphones
Check your headphone’s connector, wiring, impedance and sensitivity before choosing an output. Use 6.35 mm for a compatible single-ended cable, or a balanced jack only with a correctly wired balanced cable. Do not infer that a headphone needs the balanced output from impedance alone.

For powered speakers or an amplifier
Use the RCA or XLR line outputs and select preamp operation when you need the DX5 II to control output volume. Confirm the output mode and volume before playback, particularly when connecting powered speakers or a power amplifier.

For computer and wireless sources
Choose USB for a computer connection, optical or coaxial for compatible digital sources, or Bluetooth for wireless playback. The supported formats and codecs are listed in the table above; the source device, operating system and playback software also affect which formats are actually available.
Physical package and reliability
Pragmatic Audio’s September 2025 review reports that its package included a remote, power cable, USB cable, 6.35-to-3.5 mm adapter and Bluetooth antenna, and notes the absence of a USB-C cable as a convenience drawback. The official manual is the better reference for listed contents, but packaging can differ across region and revision. Pragmatic Audio’s review records that reviewer’s package observation.
Individual online reports of 4.4 mm output failures do not establish a failure rate. The sources cited here do not provide representative reliability statistics, so they support neither a general defect claim nor a categorical assurance of reliability. Check current seller terms and warranty coverage for your region; those details are not established here.

Verdict: a flexible desktop hub, with cable and setup caveats
The DX5 II’s case is its combination of multiple digital inputs, Bluetooth, three headphone output types, line outputs and variable preamp operation. Its published balanced power ratings are substantially higher than its single-ended ratings, but that advantage is useful only when the headphone supports the matching balanced wiring. PEQ adds flexibility, though current software and format support should be confirmed for your setup.
Consider it when you want one desktop component to serve headphones and a speaker system and its connection set matches your gear. For a purchase decision, compare output power at your headphone’s load, the output wiring it can safely use, software support, package contents and region-specific price and warranty rather than relying on a single maximum power figure.
