TopoExport and Shapezo address different parts of a 3D site workflow: TopoExport describes exporting mapped geographic layers and terrain into other applications, while Shapezo describes generating and refining editable site context from a selected map area. Use them as distinct stages, not interchangeable sources of authoritative terrain. Before relying on any output for design, confirm its provenance, coverage, coordinates, units, elevation conventions, and permitted use for your site.
What is the difference between TopoExport and Shapezo?
TopoExport presents geographic data and terrain for export to downstream CAD, BIM, and 3D applications. Its site lists layers such as buildings, cadastral parcels, roads, railways, waterways, trees, contour lines, and terrain or digital terrain models (DTMs). TopoExport defines a DTM as terrain without buildings or vegetation. Detailed terrain is specifically described as available only in Germany and Switzerland, so availability should be checked for the actual project area. TopoExport product information
Shapezo presents a map-area-based workflow for generating buildings and surrounding layers—including terrain, water, and vegetation—then reviewing and adjusting them for concept exploration. It describes exports for compatible 3D, BIM, GIS, and game-engine workflows; available formats depend on the workflow and integration. Shapezo product information

In a Shapezo-authored comparison, the company distinguishes transferring existing terrain information from creating generated conceptual proposals. That is a useful way to frame the tools’ stated roles, but it is the vendor’s characterization rather than an independent accuracy assessment. Shapezo’s workflow comparison

Which tool should you use for an early site model?
| Project need | Better-fit stated role | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bring mapped terrain or geographic layers into another application | TopoExport | Coverage for the location, selected layers, output format, coordinate reference, units, elevation datum, and terms of use. Detailed terrain is described as available only in Germany and Switzerland. TopoExport product information |

A polished, editable, or exportable model is not automatically survey-grade or suitable for engineering. A French public-sector reuse catalog describes TopoExport as generating 3D terrain models from official geographic data and lists DXF, STL, OBJ, IFC, PDF, and SVG; that record was last updated 2025-10-30 and is not a current guarantee of product availability or specifications. How to build a practical terrain-to-concept pipeline
1. Record where the terrain came from
Before exporting or modeling, document the terrain source and acquisition date, the coordinate reference system, horizontal and vertical units, elevation datum, represented boundary, and any supplied resolution or accuracy information. Inspect for missing values, outliers, and implausible elevation changes. These checks are recommended in Shapezo’s workflow article; they do not replace project-specific validation. - 4. Made from synthetic resin, the Geography Teaching Model is resistant to wear and tear, ensuring long-lasting use in educational settings.
- 5. The Terrain Model Kit provides an interactive way to explore earth science, helping learners gain a deeper understanding of tectonic principles.
- 1. The Geography Teaching Model features a detailed layered design that clearly illustrates the connection between tectonic plate movements and surface terrain changes.
- 3. This 3D Plate Tectonics Model has a moderate size and stable base, making it suitable for both large classroom presentations and small-scale home learning sessions.
- 2. Bold color differentiation in the Terrain Model Kit ensures key geological features like ocean floors and mountain ranges are easily distinguishable.
2. Export and inspect terrain in the receiving application
Select the area and output the receiving software requires, then inspect the imported result rather than relying on the export preview. Check scale, orientation, coordinate position, vertical direction, topology, mesh simplification, and gaps. Receiving applications may triangulate or interpret geometry differently, so a visually similar mesh does not prove that useful precision or data has been preserved. These are workflow checks proposed by the vendor-authored article, not independently tested results. Shapezo’s workflow comparison

3. Generate a concept as a separate layer
Choose a bounded study area in Shapezo, generate the site context, and review and adjust relevant layers. Keep the concept distinct from terrain and survey evidence. Record the boundary, input description, generation date, map information, and unresolved assumptions alongside the output so later users can tell what it represents. 4. Compare alternatives using site-design questions
For concept options, compare practical characteristics rather than treating visual polish as proof of quality:

What should you compare before choosing?
Check the factors that determine whether the output fits your actual project, rather than choosing by the presence of a 3D view alone:
- Purpose: terrain and geographic-layer transfer, or editable concept exploration?
- Location and source: Is the exact area covered, and what data underlies its terrain and context?
- Confidence needed: What level of terrain evidence does the design decision require?
- Handoff: Does the precise output format work in the receiving application, and how are coordinates and units handled?
- Scope and editability: Are area limits, layers, and the ability to adjust them suitable for the workflow?
- Operational terms: What are the current licensing or commercial-use terms and total cost for the area and layers?
TopoExport’s API page provides an area-and-layer-based credit estimator. The retrieved Shapezo product information does not establish exact current pricing or terms, so check both services directly for a real project rather than inferring a quote or license from a product description. What to confirm before using an output for design
- Coverage and source data for the exact site, plus the terrain update date
- Resolution or accuracy documentation, if supplied, and whether it meets the project’s requirements
- Coordinate reference, horizontal and vertical units, and elevation datum
- Supported export format, area limits, and compatibility with the intended application
- Licensing and commercial-use terms for the intended project
Public product descriptions do not fully establish Shapezo’s current export-format matrix, area-specific source data, geographic coverage, or project usage terms. Confirm those details, along with TopoExport’s current coverage, coordinate support, export limits, commercial-use terms, API pricing, and update cadence, directly before depending on either service for a project decision.
