The biggest wearable shift around 2025 was beyond the wrist: smart rings, smartglasses and patches were emerging alongside established watches, bands and hearables. For buyers, the useful question is not which form factor is “best,” but which fits the job—sleep tracking, notifications, workouts, hands-free audio or visual overlays—and what trade-offs it brings.

Market forecasts published since 2025 put that shift in perspective, but they are not 2025 sales results. The figures below are labeled by date and source so the emerging trends are not confused with measured adoption.

What were the top wearable trends in 2025?

Gartner’s 21 May 2025 research abstract identified smartglasses, rings and patches as emerging form factors expected to outperform the growth of traditional wrist- and ear-worn wearables. That is a forecast about relative growth, not a claim that these newer devices had overtaken watches or earbuds in market size.

IDC’s later outlook illustrates the difference: it reported 145.7 million wearable devices shipped worldwide in the first quarter of 2026, with hearables still dominant, while identifying smartglasses as the fastest-growing form factor. These developments make 2025 a useful turning point to discuss, but the newer shipment estimates should not be read as 2025 totals.

  • Patches: an emerging form factor named by Gartner, though the cited market evidence does not provide comparable sales forecasts or detailed product capabilities.

Are smart rings worth it?

A smart ring can be worth considering if you want health and activity tracking in a small device that is less visually prominent than a watch, particularly for overnight wear. It is less compelling if you need a screen, wrist-style notifications or a clear reason to wear both a ring and a watch.

IDC’s 23 October 2024 analysis recorded 880,000 global smart-ring sales in 2023. Oura held 80% and Ultrahuman 12% of that market, according to IDC. The same analysis forecast 1.7 million ring sales in 2024 and 3.2 million in 2028, describing the category as small but fast-growing; the later numbers are forecasts, not confirmed sales totals.

What a ring can do—and what it cannot replace

IDC described the Samsung Galaxy Ring as offering sleep tracking, heart-rate monitoring, activity tracking and wellness monitoring. That list shows why rings appeal as low-profile trackers, but does not establish that every ring offers the same sensors, metrics or quality of measurement. Check the specific model’s current specifications and supported phone platform before buying.

Rings and watches can overlap in tracking functions. If you already own a smartwatch, consider whether the comfort or sleep-wear advantage is valuable enough to justify a second device. IDC’s 2024 analysis explicitly raised the question of how many people will pay for both.

Examples and the subscription question

IDC’s October 2024 analysis listed a $400 release price for Samsung Galaxy Ring and a $349 base price for Oura Ring 4, plus a $5.99 monthly Oura subscription at that time. These are historical figures, not guaranteed current prices or terms; check the manufacturer’s current offer for your country before purchase. The cited material does not establish a comprehensive, current comparison of which rings work without a subscription, so verify whether the features you want are available without recurring payment.

Smart glasses: AI eyewear is not the same as display AR

“Smart glasses” describes products with meaningfully different capabilities. Some are display-free glasses built around cameras, audio and connected features; others put visual information in the wearer’s field of view. Compare them as separate categories rather than assuming all smartglasses provide augmented-reality overlays.

Display-free camera, audio and AI glasses

IDC’s 2 July 2026 outlook attributed smartglasses growth to a widening pipeline of display-free AI glasses from established companies and new entrants, with content capture and audio consumption as demand drivers. IDC said always-on AI assistants were growing but were not yet the primary driver.

For this type, weigh comfort and weight, camera recording indicators, battery life, audio quality, phone dependence and whether recording is socially acceptable in the places you go. AI features may be convenient, but the cited market evidence does not establish that they are reliable for safety-critical decisions.

Display AR glasses

Display glasses put visual content in front of the wearer, so field of view and the usefulness of overlays matter more than they do for display-free models. Check how a product connects to a phone or other host device and what it can display in the situations where you intend to use it. The cited market figures establish growth in the broader smartglasses category, not that every model is full augmented reality or suitable for the same tasks.

How fast is the category growing?

IDC’s outlook page, updated 2 July 2026, forecast 13.6 million smartglasses units in 2026, up 41.4% year over year, and about 27.3 million units by 2030 at roughly 19% compound annual growth. Those are forecasts, not audited 2025 results. The same outlook forecast 4.9 million smart-ring units in 2026 and approximately 6.3 million by 2030.

Fitness wearables: ask how the number was measured

Step counts, sleep scores, calorie estimates and activity minutes are not automatically comparable across brands. Before relying on a metric, ask how the device defines it, what sensors or protocol it uses, what evidence supports the measurement, and whether the app communicates uncertainty. A precise-looking score is not, by itself, proof of clinical accuracy.

The World Health Organization’s report, published 3 February 2026 after a technical meeting held 10–12 June 2025, says experts worked on core metrics, device specifications and protocols for measuring physical activity and sedentary behavior, as well as assessing the evidence base and research gaps. This supports the importance of consistent definitions and validation; it does not certify every consumer wearable or settle the accuracy of a particular model.

Fitness bands remain an option for people who want tracking without a prominent screen. IDC’s 2 July 2026 outlook forecast wristband shipments to fall 6.8% in 2026 to 40.2 million units, then stabilize near 39 million annually through 2028, with screen-less health-tracking bands retaining a niche among fitness-engaged users. These estimates describe the market, not a guarantee about any individual band’s usefulness.

Smartwatches remain the benchmark—but are mature

Choose a smartwatch when glanceable information and interaction matter: a screen, notifications, GPS and a broad app ecosystem are central reasons to wear one. Its larger display and wrist placement can make it less appealing for people who prioritize unobtrusive overnight wear or want less visual distraction.

IDC’s October 2024 ring analysis compared 880,000 ring sales worldwide in 2023 with roughly 161 million smartwatches. It forecast smartwatch sales of 175 million by 2028, equivalent to 1.7% average annual growth, and characterized the smartwatch category as mature, with longer replacement cycles and more iterative upgrades. The contrast helps explain why a smaller form factor can be a fast-growing niche without displacing watches in total volume.

How to choose between a ring, watch, band or glasses

Start with the task you want the device to perform, then check the compromises that are easy to overlook in a feature list.

  • Comfort and discreetness: Will you wear it overnight? Is a ring or screen-less band more comfortable than a watch for you?
  • Measurement needs: Which sensors and metrics matter, and what evidence or explanation does the manufacturer provide for them?
  • Screen and navigation: Do you need a display, notifications, GPS or apps on your wrist, or would those add distraction?
  • Glasses capability: Do you want audio and capture, an AI assistant, or visual overlays? These point to different product types.
  • Compatibility: Confirm phone and platform support for the exact model and the functions you plan to use.
  • Power: Compare expected battery life and charging routine for the features you will actually use.
  • Total cost: Include any recurring subscription in addition to the upfront price, and check current terms in your region.
  • Privacy and social fit: For camera-equipped glasses in particular, consider data controls, recording indicators and how recording may affect other people.
  • Longevity: Consider repairability, software support and how often you expect to replace the device.

Product-specific details such as battery life, compatibility, privacy controls and repairability are not established by the market-level sources cited here. Check current manufacturer information for the model you are considering rather than extrapolating from a category trend.
