There was no single worldwide ranking of 2018’s biggest stories. The Associated Press poll of U.S. editors and news directors put the Parkland school shooting first, followed by the Mueller investigation and continuing #MeToo coverage. Global and regional retrospectives instead emphasized diplomacy, war, Brexit, disasters, rescue operations and sport. The list below explains what happened and why different year-end reviews reached different conclusions.
The Associated Press ranking of major U.S. stories
The Associated Press published its annual poll on December 29, 2018, surveying U.S. editors and news directors. Its order is a U.S. newsroom ranking, not a vote on the most important events worldwide.
| AP rank | Story | What made it prominent |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Parkland school shooting and gun-control activism | The February attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killed 17 students and staff. Survivors organized nationwide demonstrations and kept gun legislation in the national debate. |
| 2 | Mueller investigation | The investigation into possible coordination between Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia remained a central U.S. political story. |
| 3 | Continuing #MeToo coverage | Reporting on sexual misconduct, workplace accountability and the consequences for powerful people continued to shape public debate. |
Parkland and the student-led response
The Parkland shooting became more than a mass-casualty crime story. Student organizers turned their experience into a national campaign for stricter gun laws, including large marches and sustained youth activism. That combination of tragedy, political argument and organizing explains its position at the top of the AP poll.

The Russia investigation supplied a continuing stream of indictments, court filings and political conflict. The November midterm elections added another major political turning point: Democrats won control of the House of Representatives while Republicans retained the Senate.
#MeToo and public accountability
#MeToo coverage remained a defining social story as allegations, investigations and institutional responses continued across entertainment, media, business and politics. The AP’s third-place position applies only to that U.S. poll.
Other U.S. stories repeatedly highlighted in 2018 reviews
California’s Camp Fire
The November Camp Fire in California was among the year’s most consequential disasters. CBS’s December 2018 retrospective reported 88 deaths; that figure is presented here as CBS’s contemporaneous total rather than an independently rechecked statistic.
Hurricane Michael and other disasters
Year-end reviews, including CBS’s month-by-month account, also gave prominent attention to Hurricane Michael and the human response to natural disasters.
Rank #2
Jamal Khashoggi’s killing
The killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi became a major international and U.S. foreign-policy story, generating sustained scrutiny of Saudi Arabia, press freedom and the responses of governments around the world.
Partial federal government shutdown
A budget impasse led to a partial U.S. federal government shutdown at the end of the year, adding another prominent domestic political conflict to the 2018 news agenda.
International stories that shaped the year
Korean diplomacy
The leaders of North and South Korea met in April, and U.S. President Donald Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore in June. The summits briefly raised hopes for progress on denuclearization and a formal easing of tensions, while leaving major disagreements unresolved.

The Syrian conflict
The war in Syria remained a central global story. International coverage continued to focus on fighting, humanitarian consequences and the competing involvement of regional and world powers.

Brexit remained the dominant political issue in the United Kingdom as the government and Parliament struggled over the terms of leaving the European Union. In the wider European news cycle, the General Data Protection Regulation took effect on May 25, changing how organizations handled personal data and privacy.
Skripal poisoning
The poisoning of former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, England, prompted a major diplomatic confrontation and accusations involving Russia.
Rank #4
Thai cave rescue
The rescue of 12 boys and their football coach from a flooded cave in Thailand became one of the year’s most followed stories. Its drama, international cooperation and successful outcome gave it unusual reach across borders.
2018 FIFA World Cup
The football tournament in Russia was a major global cultural and sporting event, reaching audiences that do not ordinarily follow political or conflict news.

Why “top stories” lists disagree
Different retrospectives are answering different questions. The AP used a poll of U.S. editors and news directors. CBS organized a chronological U.S.-centered review. The Council on Foreign Relations published an expert-selected world-events ranking. TIME framed the year through themes including political tension and threats to press freedom. HISTORY and LBC offered broader retrospective selections, with LBC giving particular weight to UK and European developments.
| Source | Geographic emphasis | Selection method or lens |
|---|---|---|
| Associated Press | United States | Poll of U.S. editors and news directors |
| CBS News | Primarily U.S., arranged across the year | Month-by-month retrospective |
| Council on Foreign Relations | Global | Expert-selected world-events ranking |
| TIME | Global | Writer’s thematic retrospective |
| HISTORY | Global | Editorial retrospective of notable events |
| LBC | United Kingdom and Europe | Chronological regional retrospective |
Because these publications use different audiences, dates and editorial criteria, their ordinal placements should not be treated as a common scorecard. An event can be central to a U.S. political ranking, less prominent in a global list, and highly prominent in a UK-focused chronology without any contradiction.

What defined the news year
Across these different lists, four patterns recur: intense political conflict, public demands for accountability, high-stakes diplomacy and war, and disasters or extraordinary rescue efforts. As Council on Foreign Relations fellow James M. Lindsay wrote when introducing his December 20 world-events list, “A seemingly unending parade of summits, crises, protests, and conflicts dominated the news.” That description captures the year’s breadth without pretending that one ranking can represent every country or audience.
