Sony’s current US catalog offers five BRAVIA Theater soundbars with different channel layouts, speaker counts and bundled accessories. This is a specification-based shortlist—not a tested ranking: Sony’s catalog describes the models, but the available information does not establish an overall sound-quality winner. Compare the configurations and check your TV’s compatibility before choosing.
How the five Sony soundbars differ
Sony describes all five models as compatible with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. That compatibility does not, by itself, guarantee a particular listening experience; the result depends on the complete setup and content. The speaker counts, channel layouts and included subwoofers below are manufacturer descriptions from Sony’s US catalog, not independent performance measurements.
| Model | Sony-listed configuration | Subwoofer included | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 | 13 speakers; Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatible | Not stated in the cited catalog description | Premium single-bar option in this shortlist, with compatible expansion options. |
| BRAVIA Theater Bar 8 | 11 speakers; Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatible | Not stated in the cited catalog description | Lower listed price tier and speaker count than Bar 9; check compatible add-ons. |
| BRAVIA Theater Bar 7 | Nine speakers; Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatible | Not stated in the cited catalog description | Single-bar candidate with compatible subwoofer and rear-speaker options listed by Sony. |
| BRAVIA Theater Bar 6 | 3.1.2 channels; Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatible | Yes, wireless | Bundled-subwoofer configuration with a 3.1.2-channel layout. |
| BRAVIA Theater Bar 5 | 3.1 channels; Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatible | Yes, wireless | Entry-oriented bundled-subwoofer configuration in the current catalog. |
Sony’s catalog listing and prices can change. Check the current listing for the exact model, package contents and price; do not assume a separately sold subwoofer or rear speakers are included with a bar.
Which Sony soundbar should you buy?
Start with the setup you want to buy now, rather than treating the five models as a universal ranking. The catalog distinguishes bars by speaker count, channel layout and whether a wireless subwoofer is included, but those facts alone do not establish which will sound best in your room.
#1 Best Overall
- UNLEASH THE FULL POTENTIAL OF SURROUND SOUND: Hear cinema-style surround sound all around you with 360 Spatial Sound Mapping.
- ROOM OPTIMIZED SOUND: Sound is auto calibrated to your room’s characteristics with Sound Field Optimization.
- SOUND STRAIGHT FROM CINEMA: Supports industry-standard formats including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced.
- INNOVATIVE ACOUSTIC DESIGN: With 13 speaker units, hear exceptional acoustic performance and precise room filling spatial audio.
- EXPAND YOUR SURROUND SOUND: Expand the cinematic experience with optional wireless subwoofer (SW3/SA-SW5) and rear speakers (RS3R/RS5).
Choose Bar 9, Bar 8 or Bar 7 if you are comparing single-bar options
Sony lists these models with 13, 11 and nine speakers, respectively, and advertises Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatibility for each. Use those distinctions to narrow your shortlist, not as proof that a higher speaker count means better sound. Check the exact package and compatible expansion products before comparing total system cost.
Choose Bar 6 or Bar 5 if you want a wireless subwoofer in the package
Sony lists both with a wireless subwoofer. Bar 6 is specified as 3.1.2 channels; Bar 5 is 3.1 channels. Compare their current package prices and physical requirements, and confirm that the additional channel designation matters to your intended setup rather than assuming it guarantees a particular effect.
Rank #2

Compare the full-system cost, not just the bar
If you expect to add bass or rear speakers, include those accessories in your budget. Sony lists optional wireless subwoofer families such as BRAVIA Theater Sub 7, Sub 8 and Sub 9, as well as SA-SW3 and SA-SW5; listed rear-speaker options include BRAVIA Theater Rear 8 and Rear 9, SA-RS3S and SA-RS5. Compatibility varies by soundbar: confirm the exact bar and accessory variant on Sony’s current product or support pages before buying.

Do not infer that every BRAVIA television supports every soundbar feature just because both products are Sony. Sony’s BRAVIA TV and audio-product compatibility guidance lists specific model combinations and notes limitations for some older TV years. Check the precise TV model and year against the soundbar, then verify which functions and connections are supported in that combination.
Rank #3
- SOUND STRAIGHT FROM CINEMA: Experience authentic cinema surround sound in your living room. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X create an immersive multi-dimensional soundscape that brings movies to life with the creator’s intent.
- CENTER SPEAKER FOR CLEAR DIALOGUE: Catch every word in the scene with a dedicated center channel speaker that ensures voices remain clear across all content.
- WIRELESS SUBWOOFER INCLUDED: A powerful wireless subwoofer with a large 160mm speaker unit delivers a deeper, richer bass sound.
- SOUND FROM ABOVE: Experience sound positioned in vertical space with Sony's Vertical Surround Engine, no in-ceiling or up-firing speakers needed.
- SOUNDS FROM SIDES: Hear a wide surround field using only front speakers with digital S-Force Pro.
- Confirm the TV and soundbar model numbers, not just their product families.
- Check which connection the models support and whether it enables the feature you want.
- Verify any feature requirements in the TV and soundbar manuals, especially for an older television.
- Check accessory compatibility separately; a subwoofer or rear speaker listed for one Sony bar is not automatically compatible with another.
What these specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Channel counts, speaker counts, included accessories and advertised format compatibility help describe the products and compare packages. They are not independent listening tests, and they do not establish a sound-quality ranking or prove that a particular bar is right for a specific room. The available official product information also does not establish a universal winner for every TV or listener.
When evaluating a Sony soundbar, use the model’s own support specifications for connection types and other technical details. For example, Sony’s HT-S2000 specifications list five amplifier channels, 250 W total output, a built-in subwoofer, HDMI eARC/ARC, optical audio input and Bluetooth 5.2. The HT-S2000 is a separate model, not one of the five BRAVIA Theater bars in this guide; its specifications illustrate what a model-specific support page may document, not how the five shortlist models compare.
