TXC, Abracon, NDK and SiTime are notable suppliers to consider, but they do not offer interchangeable portfolios: TXC and Abracon span quartz crystals and oscillators, NDK emphasizes precision crystal oscillators, and SiTime specializes in MEMS timing as well as oscillator products. The right choice depends on the exact frequency, stability, temperature range, output, package, qualification and supply requirements—not a universal ranking.

Which crystal oscillator and quartz crystal suppliers are worth comparing?

These four companies have documented timing-product portfolios, but the available manufacturer information does not establish a reliable cross-supplier ranking by market share, price or lead time. Compare specific part numbers against your design requirements rather than treating “top supplier” as a performance tier.

Supplier Portfolio emphasis Documented specifications or focus
TXC Corporation Quartz crystals and oscillators, including telecom, networking, consumer and automotive products; VCXOs; temperature-sensing crystals; MHz crystals; and kHz crystals. Its product information describes 32.768 kHz quartz resonators for temperature stability and a wider operating-temperature range, but gives no numerical tolerance or temperature range in the cited material (TXC Corporation).
Abracon A broad timing portfolio from crystals to high-performance oscillators, serving communication, transportation, industrial, medical, consumer, aerospace and defense markets. Specific frequency, tolerance, stability and environmental values are not stated in the cited portfolio overview (Abracon).
NDK Crystal oscillators for applications including 5G base stations, smartphones and automotive devices. NDK highlights synthetic quartz growth and photolithography, precision, low jitter and low noise; the cited overview does not provide comparable numerical limits (NDK).
SiTime MEMS timing products, including MHz oscillators, programmable OCXOs, super-TCXOs and low-power 32.768 kHz oscillators. Its product-family figures include 1–725 MHz and ±10–±50 ppm for listed MHz oscillators; 10–220 MHz and ±1–±5 ppb for programmable OCXOs; and 32.768 kHz and ±3–75 ppm for low-power oscillators. These are family ranges, not guarantees for every part (SiTime).

What is the difference between a quartz crystal and an oscillator?

Quartz crystal or resonator

A quartz crystal is a resonant component, not by itself a complete clock source. It normally needs an external sustaining circuit—often provided by the microcontroller or another IC—to start and maintain oscillation. Check the IC’s crystal-input requirements, including the supported frequency and load capacitance, before choosing a resonator.

Crystal oscillator

An oscillator is an active clock-source component that combines a resonator with circuitry to produce a specified output. It may simplify the board design, but the exact electrical interface matters: verify supply voltage and current, output type, frequency, stability, load requirements and any enable or tuning pins.

Product names can obscure this distinction. Confirm whether the exact part number is a passive resonator or a powered oscillator before comparing specifications or designing the footprint.

SiTime’s stated ranges cover different product classes, so they are not interchangeable specifications or a single performance ranking.

Listed MHz oscillators 1–725 MHz ±10 to ±50 ppm Product-family ranges; check the individual device and operating conditions.
Programmable OCXOs 10–220 MHz ±1 to ±5 ppb Figures are for the programmable OCXO family, not all SiTime oscillators.
Low-power oscillators 32.768 kHz ±3 to 75 ppm Family range for the stated low-power 32.768 kHz products.

The SiTime product information also lists an operating-temperature range of −55 to +125°C for relevant MHz product-family specifications. Do not apply that range to every SiTime product; confirm temperature limits for the candidate part number.

Which supplier or timing architecture fits the application?

  • 32.768 kHz RTC, watch, wearable or connected-device timing: Compare quartz resonators such as TXC’s documented 32.768 kHz class with a low-power oscillator if the design needs an integrated clock output. SiTime lists a 32.768 kHz low-power oscillator family; verify its particular tolerance, power and package against the design.
  • MCU or general MHz clock: Choose a passive crystal if the board already has a suitable oscillator circuit and the IC supports the selected resonator. Choose an XO when you need a complete clock source with a specified output. TXC and Abracon document broad quartz timing portfolios; SiTime documents MHz MEMS oscillator families.
  • Telecom, networking or precision timing: Compare the exact frequency, stability over temperature, phase noise and jitter. NDK emphasizes low-jitter, low-noise precision oscillators for 5G base stations; SiTime lists programmable OCXOs and super-TCXOs. These descriptions identify relevant product areas, not proof that one part meets a particular system budget.
  • Automotive or other demanding environments: Check the required qualification, temperature range, shock and vibration limits, aging and lifecycle status at the part-number level. TXC lists automotive applications, and NDK describes automotive reliability requirements, but application coverage alone does not establish qualification for a specific design.
  • Quartz replacement or design simplification: SiTime positions some MEMS products as replacements for legacy quartz oscillators, including plug-and-play options described for consumer uses. Confirm pinout, footprint, voltage, output, start-up behavior and timing limits before treating a replacement as drop-in.

What should you verify before selecting a part?

  1. Frequency and accuracy: Record the nominal frequency, initial tolerance and calibration needs. Distinguish the passive crystal’s characteristics from the complete circuit’s output accuracy.
  2. Temperature and aging: Compare stability across the full operating-temperature range, aging over the required service life, and any effects of shock or vibration.
  3. Timing quality: For radios, network equipment, data centers or instrumentation, check phase noise and jitter at the frequencies and offset ranges that matter to the system. A broad “low jitter” description is not a substitute for the relevant part specification.
  4. Electrical compatibility: Confirm supply voltage and current, output standard such as LVCMOS or differential, load, tuning input and programmable interfaces such as I²C or SPI where applicable.
  5. Mechanical and assembly fit: Check package dimensions, pinout, land pattern and solder-profile compatibility. A similar frequency does not make a device footprint-compatible.
  6. Qualification and supply: Verify environmental or automotive qualification, lifecycle status, sample availability and authorized sourcing for the exact part. If a second source is required, check electrical and mechanical compatibility rather than assuming another supplier’s equivalent will be interchangeable.

What the supplier information does—and does not—establish

The manufacturer portfolio descriptions identify product categories and intended application areas. They do not by themselves prove that a particular device meets a design’s accuracy, noise, qualification or sourcing needs. Nor do the cited pages establish a dependable cross-supplier market-share, price or lead-time comparison. Use current datasheets and authorized-supply information for the specific part number when making a design-in decision.
