The best handheld gaming console depends first on the games you want to play: Nintendo exclusives, a Steam library, Windows and Xbox titles, Android games, or a compact system for travel. These eight picks cover those different needs, but they are not interchangeable—and prices, stock, and configurations can change quickly.
How to choose a handheld gaming console
Start with the game library and ecosystem. Nintendo systems center on Nintendo’s own games; Steam Deck and Legion Go S are PC handhelds; the ROG Xbox Ally X runs Windows; and Retroid Pocket 5 is Android-based. A Steam library is not a guarantee that every game will work on Steam Deck, so check compatibility for the specific titles you care about.
Then weigh screen, size and ergonomics, battery life, storage, and whether you need TV play or remote play. A larger or faster display can be pleasant at home but may not be the best fit for a small travel bag. 2. Steam Deck OLED — best for a Steam library
The Steam Deck OLED is a SteamOS-based PC handheld for players who want to take compatible Steam games away from a desktop PC. Compatibility varies by game, so check individual titles rather than assuming the whole library will run. 3. Nintendo Switch OLED — best for an OLED Nintendo screen
The Switch OLED is a previous-generation Nintendo hybrid with a 7-inch OLED display. Treat this as a price-dependent recommendation, not a default budget pick: check current stock and compare new, used, and refurbished units before settling on it.

5. ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X — best for a premium Windows handheld
This Windows handheld is a route to PC storefronts and Xbox/Game Pass games, according to Pocket Tactics’ comparison guide. Make sure the listing is specifically for the ROG Xbox Ally X: it is a different product generation from the ROG Ally X (2024), and the names are easy to confuse. 7. Retroid Pocket 5 — best for Android gaming
The Retroid Pocket 5 is an Android-oriented handheld with a 5.5-inch AMOLED display listed in Pocket Tactics’ comparison. It is a better fit for readers seeking an Android device than for someone whose priority is a PC or Nintendo library. Native handheld play, streaming, and battery life
Streaming is not the same as running games on the device
The PlayStation Portal is a PS5 remote-play device, not a standalone handheld console in the same sense as the systems above. Sony says Remote Play itself does not require PlayStation Plus, although a game’s multiplayer may. TechRadar also describes cloud streaming on Portal as an option requiring PlayStation Plus Premium. Battery capacity does not tell you exact playtime
Valve’s Steam Deck OLED specifications list a 50 Wh battery and an estimated 3–12 hours of gameplay. That is Valve’s estimate, not a guarantee: game demands and settings affect runtime. Treat battery capacity and estimated hours as different measures when comparing devices, and consider your typical games rather than relying on a single headline figure.
