The five semiconductor categories most often reported as counterfeit in 2011 were analog integrated circuits, microprocessor ICs, memory ICs, programmable logic ICs, and transistors. IHS iSuppli’s often-quoted $169 billion figure was the 2011 revenue of markets that used those component groups—a measure of potential supply-chain exposure, not $169 billion in confirmed counterfeit sales, losses, or damage.
What were the five most counterfeited semiconductor parts?
In figures attributed to IHS iSuppli and reported by IEEE Spectrum in 2012, these five categories made up slightly more than two-thirds of the 1,363 counterfeit-part incidents reported for 2011. The percentages below are shares of those reported incidents, not estimates of the share of every counterfeit part circulating worldwide.

These are historical reported-case figures. They describe what was identified and reported in that dataset; undiscovered counterfeits and cases absent from reporting are not counted.
What did the $169 billion counterfeit-chip risk figure mean?
IHS iSuppli used $169 billion to describe the combined 2011 semiconductor revenue of application markets that used the five component groups. In other words, it was a proxy for the scale of markets potentially exposed to supply-chain risk. It was not a measured total of counterfeit-chip revenue, fraud, replacement costs, or economic damage, and it should not be presented as a current market statistic.

Are analog ICs and memory chips still commonly counterfeited?
ERAI’s annual-report publication in 2026 says that programmable logic ICs, analog ICs, microprocessor ICs, and memory ICs were again among the largest categories in its 2025 reports. ERAI recorded 748 parts in 2025, 29.1% fewer than in 2024. These figures describe reports submitted to ERAI, not a census of counterfeit activity worldwide; they support the conclusion that analog and memory parts remained prominent in that reporting stream, not a global ranking or prevalence rate.
In the same 2025 dataset, suspect-counterfeit classifications, including combined categories, accounted for 68.84% of reports. ERAI also reported that 60.02% of reported parts were obsolete and 36.15% were active or otherwise available. Obsolete parts therefore feature prominently in those reports, but an active or available part is not automatically protected from counterfeiting.

Why are these component groups targets?
They are high-volume categories used across many application areas, including computing, consumer electronics, wired and wireless communications, automotive, industrial, military, and medical systems. Broad use creates many opportunities for a suspect part to enter a supply chain. Parts may be cheap substitutes, salvaged components, or devices that do not meet the required quality standards.

The consequences depend on where a component is used. A faulty analog IC might cause a dropped phone call in one product, while a failure in aviation, medical, military, nuclear, or automotive equipment could have far more serious consequences. Rory King, then IHS director of supply-chain product marketing, described that range in 2012; the examples illustrate why a component’s application and safety requirements matter more than its category name alone.

How can you tell if a semiconductor is counterfeit?
No single visual check or electrical test can establish authenticity. A component can look plausible yet have an uncertain history, and ERAI reported that 24% of suspect-counterfeit parts in its 2025 data passed electrical testing. That finding does not mean every electrically passing part is counterfeit; it shows why electrical testing alone can miss suspect parts.
- Check the source and documentation. Confirm the supplier is approved for the purchase and request traceability to the original component manufacturer (OCM) or its authorized channel. Compare part markings and lot information with the paperwork.
- Quarantine inconsistencies. If markings, packaging, documentation, or supplier history raise concerns, keep the lot separate from accepted inventory while it is assessed. Do not treat an initial visual inspection as proof of authenticity.
- Escalate high-risk or unresolved cases. Use a qualified laboratory when the part’s traceability is missing or uncertain, the purchase came through the open market, or the application has serious safety consequences. A laboratory can select appropriate inspection and testing methods; the evidence here does not establish that any one method proves authenticity in every case.
- Keep the decision tied to the application. Use stricter sourcing and assessment controls where a failure could put people, critical operations, or regulated equipment at risk.
Is buying from an authorized distributor enough?
Buying directly from an OCM or its authorized distributors or resellers is the World Semiconductor Council’s stated way for OEMs and contract manufacturers to avoid major counterfeit-related risks. Authorization is therefore a strong procurement control, but it does not replace sound receiving records, traceability checks, or quarantine and escalation procedures for a suspicious lot.

The scale of enforcement activity also shows why the threat merits attention without providing a global prevalence estimate: the World Semiconductor Council cited U.S. and EU customs seizures of more than 360,000 counterfeit ICs and networking components in late 2007, and 420,000 in May and June 2008. The Council also says the magnitude of counterfeiting cannot be measured precisely.
