VLC is the best starting point for most Android viewers because its developer documents support for embedded and external subtitles, multiple tracks, and network media. Choose MX Player if you want more listed subtitle formats and gesture controls, or Just Player for a simpler file-opening workflow with Android’s system caption styling. The right choice depends on your subtitle file, video, and device—not on a universal compatibility guarantee.

Which Android subtitle player should you choose?

App Best fit Subtitle support and controls Important caveat
VLC for Android Broad-format starting point; local files and network media VideoLAN documents embedded and external subtitles, including ASS and DVD subtitles, and selection among multiple audio and subtitle tracks. Hardware decoding is not supported on every device, according to VideoLAN.
MX Player Viewers who want many subtitle formats and dedicated gestures Its Google Play listing names formats including SRT, SSA/ASS with full styling, WebVTT, DVD/DVB tracks, and others. Gestures can move, reposition, and resize captions. Availability and branding may vary by market; the listing describes an All Files Access requirement for finding and playing media and subtitle files.
Just Player A focused, file-oriented player with system-level caption styling Its project documentation lists SRT, SSA/ASS with limited styling, TTML, VTT, and DVB subtitles. External subtitles can load automatically through its documented file-opening workflow. Some older video formats and certain 10-bit AVC files may not play, depending on the device and file.

1. VLC for Android: the broad-compatibility starting point

VideoLAN’s official VLC for Android feature page says it supports “Subtitles support, embedded and external, including ASS and DVD subtitles.” It also documents choosing between multiple audio and subtitle tracks. That makes VLC a sensible first install if you are unsure which subtitle format your movie uses or if you need to switch between available tracks.

The Google Play listing for VLC describes the app as free and open source, without ads or in-app purchases. It also lists teletext, closed captions, and multiple tracks. VLC can browse network streams, NAS devices, and shared drives, which is useful if your videos are not stored on the phone.

Compatibility is not unlimited: VideoLAN notes that hardware decoding is unavailable on some devices. Its official Android download page identified version 3.7.0 and Android 4.2 or later for that current version when accessed on October 7, 2026. Check the current listing for updates and device requirements before installing.

2. MX Player: more subtitle formats and hands-on controls

MX Player is a strong match if you use less common subtitle files or want to adjust captions while watching. Its Google Play listing names DVD/DVB tracks, SSA/ASS with full styling, SAMI, SubRip (.srt), MicroDVD, VobSub, SubViewer, MPL2, TMPlayer, Teletext, PJS, and WebVTT. The same listing describes gestures for moving to the next or previous subtitle text, changing caption position, and resizing captions.

Load an external subtitle file

  1. Start playing the locally stored video in MX Player.
  2. Tap the Closed Caption icon.
  3. Choose a subtitle file in the video’s folder, or browse to the folder where the subtitle is stored.

Those steps come from MX Player Support’s instructions for locally downloaded videos. If you do not have a subtitle file, the support page says you can use the app’s “Online Subtitles” option to download one.

The Google Play listing says MX Player requires Storage / All Files Access to find and play media and subtitle files. It also notes that certain permissions related to file transfer can be denied without losing other app functionality; that does not mean every listed permission is necessary just to display subtitles. The listing names Amazon Mobile LLC as developer and reports an update on September 25, 2026. MX Player Support also displays a notice that Amazon MX Player is joining Prime Video, so check how the app is presented and available in your market.

3. Just Player: a simple external-subtitle workflow

Just Player may suit you if you want a focused player rather than a long list of controls. Its project documentation lists SRT, SSA/ASS with limited styling, TTML, VTT, and DVB subtitles.

Load external subtitles

According to the project FAQ, long-press the file-open action and select the root video folder; Just Player can then load external subtitles automatically. To change caption font, size, or color, use Android’s system Caption preferences.

The project also identifies playback limitations: upstream ExoPlayer does not handle some older formats, including WMV and Theora, and most devices cannot handle 10-bit AVC. A subtitle format appearing on the supported list does not guarantee the video itself will play on your particular phone.

Embedded subtitles and external files are different

An embedded subtitle track is inside the video file. An external subtitle is a separate file—often a sidecar file stored alongside the video or elsewhere on the phone. VLC documents both types; MX Player’s support instructions explain how to select a separate file, and Just Player describes loading external subtitles from the video folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an external file, first check its extension and whether its name or folder makes it easy to identify. Then use the player’s subtitle selection or file-opening workflow. If the video already contains multiple tracks, select the right one in the player instead of searching for a separate file.

How to choose based on your files and viewing habits

  • Start with VLC if you want a free, ad-free option with documented embedded and external subtitle support, or you play media from a network share.
  • Choose MX Player if you rely on a specific format from its longer listed format set, want ASS styling, or value gesture controls for subtitle position and size.
  • Try Just Player if you prefer a streamlined file workflow and Android’s system caption preferences for appearance.

For all three, compatibility depends on the video container and codec, subtitle format, and the device’s decoder working together. A player’s subtitle support alone cannot establish that it will play every video file.
