ChatGPT is the most widely used AI chatbot in the recent U.S. and Australian measures covered here, and it also leads Comscore’s June 2026 desktop and mobile visitor lists. But there is no defensible, single worldwide ranking of the top 10 AI tools: the available studies measure different things, in different places, and include different kinds of products. This is a clearly labeled shortlist of 10 tools that appear in those measures—not a universal league table.

How to read this top 10

The shortlist brings together named chatbots and other AI tools appearing in the evidence below. It is ordered for scanning, not as a claim that No. 2 is more popular than No. 3 worldwide. The measures are not interchangeable: a U.S. adult survey asks whether people have ever used a named chatbot; Comscore estimates visitors by device; Roy Morgan estimates recent use in Australia. None establishes a global top 10 across AI categories.

Popularity also does not measure answer quality, privacy, or suitability for a particular job. Use the evidence to identify tools with substantial reach, then choose based on your task and requirements.

Ten popular AI tools to know

1. ChatGPT

ChatGPT leads each of the specific measures cited here: Pew’s U.S. adult survey of named chatbots, Comscore’s June 2026 desktop and mobile visitor rankings, and Roy Morgan’s Australian estimates. Those results establish broad reach within their respective scopes, not that ChatGPT is best for every task.

2. Google Gemini

Gemini is the next-most-used named chatbot in Pew’s U.S. survey and the second tool in Roy Morgan’s Australian estimates. It ranked second on Comscore’s June 2026 mobile list and fourth on its desktop list. Roy Morgan’s figure refers to active Gemini use, not use embedded in Google Search.

3. Microsoft Copilot

Copilot placed third among Pew’s named chatbots and in Roy Morgan’s Australian estimates. Comscore ranked it second on desktop and third on mobile in June 2026. These placements reflect different audiences and measurement methods, rather than one consistent head-to-head score.

4. Meta AI

Meta AI appears in Pew’s U.S. chatbot survey, where it ranked fourth among the named services by reported ever-use. The measures summarized here do not provide comparable visitor counts or an Australian estimate for Meta AI.

5. Grok

Grok is included in Pew’s named-chatbot results, ranking below Meta AI and above Claude by reported ever-use among U.S. adults. The cited evidence does not establish its position in Comscore’s device rankings or Roy Morgan’s Australian estimates.

6. Claude

Claude appears in Pew’s U.S. survey and Roy Morgan’s Australian estimates. Comscore’s Q2 2026 report also found Claude’s share of AI prompt volume rose during the first half of 2026. Prompt share is a separate measure from people who report having used a chatbot or estimated site visitors.

7. Character.ai

Character.ai is the seventh named chatbot in Pew’s U.S. adult ever-use results. It is not included in the named-tool lists described by the Comscore and Roy Morgan findings here, so those sources do not support a cross-market comparison for it.

8. Canva

Canva is a design tool rather than simply a general-purpose chatbot. Comscore included it in its June 2026 visitor rankings: third on desktop and fifth on mobile. Roy Morgan separately estimated use of Canva Magic Studio in Australia; that is a named AI feature, not necessarily the same measure as visiting Canva’s site or using Canva generally.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

9. Voicemod

Voicemod appeared fifth in Comscore’s June 2026 desktop visitor ranking. It does not appear in the Pew chatbot results or the Australian named-tool estimates summarized here. Its place on this list reflects its inclusion in a device-specific audience measure, not a chatbot ranking.

10. Octane AI

Octane AI appeared fourth in Comscore’s June 2026 mobile visitor list. Comscore’s list is device-specific and shows only five entities, so this placement does not establish Octane AI’s overall rank or position in other markets.

What the popularity numbers actually say

U.S. adults: reported ever-use of named chatbots

Pew Research Center surveyed 5,119 U.S. adults from February 17–23, 2026. It found 49% had used AI chatbots, including roughly one-quarter who used them daily. The named-tool figures below are self-reported ever-use, not active-user counts.

Named chatbot U.S. adults reporting ever-use
ChatGPT 44%
Gemini 24%
Copilot 17%
Meta AI 14%
Grok 8%
Claude 6%
Character.ai 3%

In the same survey, about four in ten adults said they use chatbots for information searching, and 38% of employed adults said they use them for work tasks. Those figures provide context for chatbot adoption; they do not compare tool quality. Pew notes that question wording changed across years, so year-to-year comparisons require care.

Comscore: estimated visitors by device in June 2026

Comscore defines its visitor measure as estimated, deduplicated unique people who visited content from a website, category, channel, or application during the reporting period. Its displayed top-five lists differ by device and include tools beyond general chatbots.

Desktop rank Estimated unique visitors Mobile rank Estimated unique visitors
ChatGPT 57,945,333 ChatGPT 46,639,037
Copilot 26,243,782 Gemini 18,651,203
Canva 17,192,195 Copilot 10,500,583
Gemini 11,698,457 Octane AI 8,271,198
Voicemod 7,278,995 Canva 6,966,992

In a separate Q2 2026 report, Comscore said ChatGPT’s share of AI prompt volume fell from 70% in January to 50% in June; Gemini’s rose from 17% to 30%, and Claude’s from 2% to 11%. These are Comscore panel findings about prompt volume, not visitor counts. Comscore also reported that 35% of desktop users and 29% of mobile users visited an AI assistant in June 2026, compared with 25% and 12% respectively in January 2025.

Australia: recent use in an average four-week period

Roy Morgan’s Single Source research for January–March 2026 used a base of 14,646 Australians aged 14+. It estimated that 13.6 million people, or 58%, used AI tools in an average four weeks.

Why popularity shifts with the measure

A survey of whether someone has ever tried a chatbot can count a casual past user. A visitor estimate counts people who accessed a site, category, channel, or app during a reporting period. Prompt volume reflects activity rather than simply whether a person has tried a service. Geography, age range, device coverage, and the products included also change the result.

For example, Comscore’s lists include Canva, Voicemod, and Octane AI alongside assistants, while Pew’s named-tool question compares chatbots. Roy Morgan’s findings cover Australia, while Pew’s survey covers U.S. adults. Combining those entries into one numbered ranking would make unlike measurements look comparable when they are not.

Product-specific activity data needs the same caution. OpenAI’s June 2026 Signals analysis of people on individual ChatGPT plans (Free, Go, Plus, and Pro) found that six months after signing up, users sent 50% more messages per day than at sign-up and had doubled the number of distinct tasks they had tried. That describes depth of use among ChatGPT users; it is not a comparison of market share against other services.

How to choose an AI tool for your needs

Start with the job, not the leaderboard

Decide whether you need a general assistant, a tool for design, or another specific workflow. The shortlist spans different categories, so a high placement in one measure may not make a tool relevant to your task.

Check accuracy, trust, and privacy

Menlo Ventures’ July 2026 survey of 5,067 U.S. adults, released September 16, 2026, reports that respondents prioritized accuracy (45%), trustworthiness (40%), and security and privacy (36%) over ease of use (32%) among its stated AI product-selection criteria. These are reported preferences, not independently measured product scores. Review the current terms and privacy options for the specific product and plan you intend to use.

Consider whether you need more than one tool

Menlo Ventures reported that the average U.S. AI user used three general AI assistants, compared with 2.2 in 2025. It also estimated that 55% of U.S. AI users paid for at least one AI product. These findings suggest that use is not necessarily a one-tool choice; they do not show that everyone needs multiple assistants or a paid plan.
