The best RPG games for Windows PC depend on what you want from the genre: tactical party combat, a huge world to explore, consequential choices, or an ongoing online adventure. This guide selects ten strong options for different tastes; the order is an editorial recommendation, not a measured ranking of every PC RPG. If you’re wondering which PC RPG to play first, start with the entry whose combat and story style sound most appealing.

Top 10 RPG games for Windows PC

Use the list to match a game to the experience you want, rather than treating the first entry as an objective winner. The recommendations range from self-contained campaigns to an online world, and from tactical turns to real-time action.

1. Baldur’s Gate 3 — best for tactical choices and party role-play

Choose this if you want turn-based, party-based combat alongside character-driven dialogue and decisions that can lead to different story outcomes. Its companions are central to the role-playing experience, making it a strong first pick for players who enjoy shaping a group as much as building a protagonist. Larian Studios says the PC version has full controller support; see its controller support FAQ. The official system requirements list Windows 10 64-bit, an SSD, and 150 GB of available storage, with separate minimum and recommended specifications. Check the live requirements before buying.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered — best for a story-rich open world

Choose this for a sprawling fantasy journey centered on Geralt’s search for Ciri and the Northern Kingdoms. The publisher says Remastered upgrades visuals, performance, and gameplay, and includes the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. CD Projekt says the remaster was released on September 29, 2026; qualifying owners of the base game can receive a free upgrade on eligible platforms. Confirm platform, ownership, and regional eligibility on the publisher’s page before assuming you qualify.

Doom - PC
  • A Relentless Campaign: There is no taking cover or stopping to regenerate health as you beat back Hell's raging demon hordes
  • Return of id Multiplayer: Dominate your opponents in DOOM's signature, fast-paced arena-style combat
  • Near-Limitless Gameplay: DOOM SnapMap - A powerful, but easy-to-use game and level editor that allows for limitless gameplay experiences on every platform

3. Elden Ring — best for exploration and demanding action combat

Pick Elden Ring if you enjoy discovering routes and secrets in a hostile world, then learning from difficult boss fights. Its action combat rewards preparation and experimenting with character builds. It suits players who prefer environmental storytelling and exploration over a constant stream of explicit quest directions.

4. Cyberpunk 2077 — best for a futuristic, story-led RPG

Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for a first-person role-playing adventure in a dense science-fiction city, with a story shaped by your character choices. Its post-launch improvements have helped make the experience more compelling, while the Phantom Liberty expansion adds a separate expansion storyline. The base game and expansion are distinct purchases; check the current edition details to see what a particular bundle includes.

Rank #2
Fallout 4 - PC
  • Next generation of open-world gaming
  • Developed by Bethesda Game Studios under the direction of Todd Howard
  • Fallout 4 is the follow up to the 2008 'Game of the Year' Fallout 3
  • First title from the world-renowned studio since the release of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

5. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — best for open-ended fantasy roaming

Skyrim is a good fit if you would rather set your own goals than follow one tightly directed campaign. You can roam, take on quests, and develop your character at your own pace. Its active mod community is another draw for players who want to customize or extend their PC experience; individual mods can have their own compatibility requirements.

6. Mass Effect Legendary Edition — best for a connected science-fiction trilogy

Choose this collection for a character-focused science-fiction story in which companions and decisions connect across three games. It offers a longer commitment than a single-game campaign, so it is best for players ready to spend substantial time with one continuing cast and story.

Rank #3
Dragon Age 2 - Bioware Signature Edition - PC
  • Enjoy the game's atypical, story-within-a-story nonlinear narrative style
  • Embark upon an all-new adventure that takes place across an entire decade and shapes itself around every decision you make
  • Determine your rise to power from a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land
  • Think like a general and fight like a Spartan with dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle whether you are a mage, rogue, or warrior
  • Go deeper into the world of Dragon Age with an entirely new cinematic experience that grabs hold of you from the beginning and never lets go

7. Fallout: New Vegas — best for faction politics and consequential choices

Pick Fallout: New Vegas if you want to navigate rival factions and see how reputation and alliances affect your place in the world. Its appeal lies in political choices and shifting power struggles as much as exploration or combat.

8. Dragon Age: Inquisition — best for fantasy companions and party development

Choose Inquisition for a large fantasy adventure built around a memorable cast, party relationships, and player decisions. Character creation offers race and class choices, while developing a team gives the journey a strong party-RPG feel.

Rank #4
Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood - PC
  • Customer must have Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn to play Stormblood
  • Increased level cap up to level 70
  • New Jobs – Red Mage and Samurai
  • New Beast Tribe and Primal
  • New Alliance Raid

9. Final Fantasy XIV — best for an ongoing online RPG

Pick Final Fantasy XIV if you want a persistent online world rather than a solo campaign with a fixed ending. A free trial lets newcomers try the game, but its limits and subscription terms can change; review the current official game information before committing. It is the outlier on this list for players seeking an ongoing online experience.

10. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous — best for deep character building and tactical play

Choose Pathfinder if you want detailed character-build decisions and a substantial campaign with tactical combat, companions, and quests. Its depth is a strength for players who enjoy planning abilities and party strategy, but it can feel demanding if you prefer a simpler build system.

How to choose the right PC RPG for you

Before choosing, decide which parts of role-playing matter most. A game can be excellent in one area and still be a poor fit for your preferences or available time.

  • Combat: Choose turn-based party tactics for deliberate decisions, real-time action for direct control, or boss-focused action for a greater emphasis on timing and learning enemy patterns.
  • Exploration: Decide whether you want a directed quest journey or an open world where wandering is part of the reward.
  • Story and companions: Look for a standalone protagonist journey, a party whose members develop alongside you, or decisions that continue across multiple games.
  • Build depth: Consider how much you want to tune classes, abilities, equipment, and play style. More options can be rewarding, but they also ask for more planning.
  • Play mode and time: A solo campaign, co-op options, and an ongoing online world offer different commitments. A trilogy collection or an expansion bundle can add much more content than a single campaign.
  • PC compatibility: Check the current Windows requirements on the publisher or store page for each specific game. A title’s age or genre does not tell you how well it will run on your PC.

Which RPG should you play first?

If you want a starting point, choose by the experience you’re most eager to play: Baldur’s Gate 3 for tactical decisions and party role-play; The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered for an open-world story; or Elden Ring for exploration and challenging action. These are different kinds of RPG, so the best first game is the one whose core style sounds enjoyable—not necessarily the one highest in an editorial list.

What is the best RPG for a low-end PC?

There is no reliable low-end-PC winner established by genre or release date alone. System requirements vary by game and can change, and meeting a minimum specification does not guarantee a particular frame rate or visual quality. Compare your PC’s processor, memory, graphics hardware, operating system, and free storage with the current requirements for each title. For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian’s listed requirements include Windows 10 64-bit, an SSD, and 150 GB of available storage; consult the linked requirements page for the full minimum and recommended specifications.

Which RPG has the best story?

That depends on what kind of story you want. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered centers on Geralt’s search for Ciri; Mass Effect Legendary Edition connects choices and companions across a trilogy; and Baldur’s Gate 3 emphasizes party relationships and decisions that can change outcomes. These are editorial fits, not a universal measure of story quality.

PC editions, availability, and controller support

Edition details, requirements, prices, and store listings can change. Check the publisher or store page for the exact PC edition and its current contents before purchase. The Microsoft Store’s PC role-playing chart showed Baldur’s Gate 3, Skyrim Special Edition, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth among paid RPG listings when accessed; that is a changing storefront snapshot, not a guarantee of current availability or an endorsement. Controller support also varies by game. Larian confirms full controller support on PC for Baldur’s Gate 3, but do not assume that applies to every game in this guide.
