CBS Sports and Tony Romo mutually agreed to part ways on October 2, 2026, after Romo had been on leave following his July arrest in Wisconsin. Romo pleaded no contest on September 1 to an operating-while-intoxicated (OWI) charge. CBS said JJ Watt will remain with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on its lead NFL broadcast team for the rest of the season.
What CBS and Romo announced
CBS Sports announced the separation on Friday, October 2, describing it as mutual. The network thanked Romo for nine years of contributions and wished him well. Romo said he planned to take a break, focus on his health and family, and then pursue his next opportunity. He did not announce a next job or a timeline for returning to broadcasting.
CBS’s statement, carried in its coverage, said: “CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward.” CBS Sports’ October 2 report and the Associated Press report cover the announcement.
Who is replacing Tony Romo on CBS?
JJ Watt will continue alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on CBS’s lead NFL broadcast team for the remainder of the season. CBS said its other broadcast teams would remain unchanged. The announcement addresses the current season; it does not identify a permanent long-term replacement for Romo.

Romo’s arrest and leave: the timeline
- 2017: Romo began working as CBS’s lead NFL game analyst.
- July 23, 2026: Romo was arrested after a traffic stop in Wisconsin while driving south on Interstate 43. CBS Sports reported the stop was in Milwaukee.
- July 31, 2026: CBS placed Romo on leave, according to CBS Sports. AP reported that he had been on leave since the July arrest.
- September 1, 2026: Romo pleaded no contest to an operating-while-intoxicated charge, according to CBS Sports and AP.
- October 2, 2026: CBS and Romo announced they had mutually agreed to part ways.
AP reported, citing Milwaukee County court records, that Romo lost his driving privileges for six months and was ordered to complete an alcohol assessment program. Those reported court conditions are separate from CBS’s statement about the employment decision.
What is confirmed—and what remains unclear
The reports establish the arrest, Romo’s leave, his no-contest plea and the subsequent separation. CBS characterized the decision as mutual. The timing shows that the departure followed the arrest and leave, but the public reports do not establish that the arrest was the sole reason for the separation or disclose either party’s private reasoning, contract terms, severance or settlement.

Before the separation was announced, AP reported that CBS Sports president David Berson had said there was no timeline for a decision and that the network was assessing an evolving situation. That described the interim period; it is not an explanation of the final decision.

“DUI” is familiar shorthand in headlines, but the Wisconsin charge reported in this case is operating while intoxicated, or OWI. The legal milestones should be kept distinct: Romo was arrested, faced an OWI charge, and later pleaded no contest to that charge. A no-contest plea should not be rewritten as a guilty plea or a conviction unless a reliable source establishes that specific legal outcome.
