Yale announced on October 2, 2026, that former football coach Tony Reno had died at 52. Hindustan Times reported that Reno was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in 2025, citing wording attributed to a fundraiser. Yale’s memorial did not mention the diagnosis, and the reviewed reports gave no official cause of death. The diagnosis was reported; it has not been established in those reports that CJD caused his death.
What is known about Tony Reno’s illness and death
- Death: Yale announced Reno’s death on October 2, 2026. The Associated Press report carried by The Washington Post said he was 52.
- Health-related departure: The AP reported that Reno had been on medical leave since the end of the previous season and resigned in February for health reasons.
- Reported diagnosis: Hindustan Times reported a CJD diagnosis in 2025, attributing it to wording from a fundraiser. Yale’s memorial did not discuss CJD or provide a clinical history.
- Cause of death: The AP and Hindustan Times reports reviewed here said no official cause was given. A reported diagnosis is not, by itself, confirmation of what caused a person’s death.
Yale’s October 2 memorial remembers Reno’s 14 seasons as head coach, five Ivy League championships, and 83 career wins. It says he is survived by his wife, Toni, and children Dante, Angelina, and Vince. The AP account was carried by The Washington Post; the diagnosis account appeared in Hindustan Times.
What CJD is—and what its statistics do not say about Reno
The CDC describes CJD as a rare, rapidly progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disorder believed to be caused by prions: abnormal proteins that can prompt normal proteins in the brain to misfold. The CDC estimates an annual incidence of about 1–2 cases per million people in the United States and many other countries. It also reports about 500–600 U.S. cases each year. These are population figures, not information about an individual’s diagnosis or course.
In its 2026 clinical overview, the CDC says about 85% of CJD cases are sporadic, 5–15% familial, and less than 1% iatrogenic. Those are proportions across cases; the reviewed reporting does not identify Reno’s CJD subtype. The CDC also gives a median decline of 4–5 months after symptoms begin. That statistic cannot establish when Reno’s symptoms began or how long he was ill.

How CJD is evaluated and confirmed
CJD evaluation can take account of a person’s symptoms and disease course, spinal-fluid testing, MRI, and EEG. The CDC describes criteria for classifying sporadic CJD as possible, probable, or definite. These categories and the tests used in an evaluation are not all equivalent to confirmation: the CDC says confirmation requires neuropathologic and/or immunodiagnostic testing of brain tissue obtained through biopsy or autopsy.
The CDC lists dementia as a primary symptom; early neurologic signs may include trouble walking, sudden jerky movements, and visual disturbances. The reviewed accounts do not establish which symptoms Reno experienced, what tests he underwent, or whether his diagnosis was confirmed by brain-tissue testing.

Classic CJD is not the same as “mad cow disease”
CJD includes distinct forms, and the shorthand “mad cow disease” can blur an important difference. The CDC says variant CJD (vCJD) is associated with eating beef from cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), while classic CJD is not caused by BSE. The reporting on Reno identifies CJD but does not establish a subtype, so calling his reported diagnosis “mad cow disease” would be unsupported.

What treatment can—and cannot—do
The CDC says no specific therapy has been shown to stop CJD’s progression. Care is supportive and intended to improve comfort. This is general medical information, not a description of Reno’s treatment or care plan; the reports reviewed do not state what care he received.
