Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is most rewarding as a creative comedy toy: make a cast of Miis, shape their island, and watch their relationships and problems produce unpredictable moments. It is less compelling if you want a focused campaign, a steady stream of new goals, or easy ways to share the resulting stories online.
What do you do in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream?
You create Mii characters based on people you choose, customize their appearance, personalities, and voices, then follow their lives on an island. You can help them through problems and influence their interactions and relationships. Nintendo’s January 2026 overview also highlights expanded character customization, island building, and player-created items (Nintendo’s overview).
The central pleasure is authorship followed by surprise. You decide who belongs in the cast and what kind of place they inhabit; the game supplies situations and interactions that can turn that setup into comedy. This is not structured like a story campaign that steadily guides you from one authored objective to the next. The fun depends substantially on whether you enjoy observing, arranging, and nudging a small fictional society.

Is Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream any good?
Reviews point to a game with a strong, distinctive premise and a real risk of routine. Nintendo Life finds substantial creative potential in its strangeness and humor, while warning that the life-simulation rhythm can feel samey (Nintendo Life’s review). GamesRadar+ likewise praises the emergent comedy and creation tools, but notes the scarcity of traditional goals and the tendency for minigames to repeat (GamesRadar+’s review).
#1 Best Overall
- Populate your island with Mii characters and watch them come to life
- Base your Mii characters on family and friends, or whatever you want—and customizer, including some face customization options you haven’t seen before
- Pick your Mii characters up and place them near each other to chat and hang out
- Help your Mii characters explore likes and dislikes, find relationships, and get up to all sorts of fun
- Give Mii characters clothes, food, items, and life advice as they deal with all kinds of situations
Its best quality is the cast you create
Customization is not merely a way to decorate a conventional adventure: it gives the game its subject matter. A cast drawn from friends, family, public figures, or invented characters can make ordinary island events feel personally funny. The payoff comes from seeing the characters collide in ways you did not script, rather than from mastering a deep simulation system or completing a tightly directed plot.
The open-ended pace can become repetitive
That same structure is also the main limitation. If you need a clear chain of objectives or frequent mechanical changes to keep play moving, the game’s self-directed routine may feel thin. The reviews’ concerns about sameness and recurring minigames matter most for players who want each session to introduce a new system or substantial progression.

- After over ten years, Tomodachi Life is back! Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream comes to Nintendo Switch on the 16th of April 2026.
- On a small island floating in the sea, Mii characters live their own carefree lives. You're in charge of this island, so create anyone you’d like to live here as Mii characters, like ones based on friends, family and even yourself.
- Then, choose their personality, voice, and help your Mii characters enjoy their island life however they see fit. You can see what’s on their minds, help them solve problems, watch them interact, cultivate their friendships and more.
How well does creativity translate into sharing?
The game gives players tools to make personal characters and items, but creative ownership does not automatically mean social sharing is well supported. Game Informer argues that the lack of meaningful social elements leaves a gap in a game whose premise naturally invites people to show others what their Miis are doing (Game Informer’s review).
That distinction is worth considering before buying: the game’s creative appeal can work perfectly well as a private, personal toy, but players hoping for robust ways to exchange or showcase island stories should not assume those features are part of the experience.
