Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a reimagining of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut, not simply the original game with sharper graphics. Its announced changes include expanded environments, rebuilt puzzles, new traversal and combat features, and deeper story connections. The game is scheduled for February 12, 2027, and remains unreleased as of October 7, 2026, so these are announced features and limited preview details—not a verdict on the finished game.
Is Legacy of Atlantis a remake or a reimagining?
Crystal Dynamics Game Director Will Kerslake calls Legacy of Atlantis a “reimagining”: the team wants to preserve recognizable touchpoints while adapting the adventure for a modern audience. Kerslake told Xbox Wire that it is not “just the same game, but we just made the graphics better.” That distinction matters: familiar locations and ideas return, but the developers have not promised a level-by-level reproduction of the 1996 game.
There is an earlier remake to keep in mind: Tomb Raider: Anniversary (2007), which Xbox Wire identifies as a previous remake of the original. Legacy of Atlantis is a separate, newly announced reimagining, rather than a new edition of Anniversary.

Lost Valley becomes more connected
The clearest specific example is Peru’s Lost Valley. The publisher says areas that were self-contained rooms in the original have become semi-connected spaces that can be approached from new angles. This changes how the location is structured and navigated, rather than merely updating its appearance. The description appears in the official announcement.

- Languages: Voice: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean; Subtitles: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified).
That example does not establish how every level has changed. No comprehensive level-by-level comparison has been announced, so it is safer to treat Lost Valley as a confirmed illustration of the redesign—not a template for every area.
What is different about puzzles?
The developers say Peru’s puzzles have been rebuilt from the ground up, including a redesigned version of the Lost Valley cog puzzle. The new game’s PlayStation feature listing names water-flow manipulation, light-beam redirection, pressure plates and symbols among its puzzle mechanics.
These details suggest that the game revisits familiar puzzle ideas while changing how players solve them. They do not confirm that every puzzle from the 1996 game has been replaced or redesigned.

How does traversal and combat change?
More announced movement options
PlayStation’s feature list includes climbing, leaping, swinging and a grappling hook. Those are announced features of Legacy of Atlantis; the available sources do not provide a complete comparison of the original game’s controls and moveset, so a precise old-versus-new input list would be misleading.
A more elaborate T-Rex encounter
In the Xbox Wire interview, Flying Wild Hog Art Director Arek Tomaszewski describes the original T-Rex fight as simple—“just shoot and run”—and discusses a more cinematic, expanded encounter for the new game. The interview also describes feathers on dinosaurs and a Focus meter that enables bullet-time acrobatics. PlayStation lists dual pistols, unlockable weapons and acrobatic attacks.
These are developer descriptions and features in an official listing, not evidence that every fight uses bullet time or that the final combat has been independently assessed.

Does the story change?
The new game returns to Lara’s first-adventure premise: the search for the Scion. Its official synopsis sends her through Peru, Greece and Egypt, as well as a Mediterranean island. PlayStation says the classic story has been expanded with deeper connections linking this defining adventure to Lara’s future.

The announcement does not enumerate all the new story material or say that every original plot beat remains unchanged. The supported comparison is that the Scion premise is familiar, while the developers say they are adding connections and adapting the story.
What changes in visuals, tone and voice?
Unreal Engine 5 is named in the official game information. In its limited preview, Xbox Wire describes the new game’s look as realistic but more vibrant, saturated, expansive and dramatic than the darker, more grounded tone associated with the Survivor trilogy. That is the outlet’s preview impression, not a measured graphics comparison or a claim about final performance.

Amazon’s announcement names Alix Wilton Regan as Lara’s voice in the new games. The source confirms the casting, but does not establish a particular change in voice direction or performance style.

What is not yet known?
Because the game has not released, the announced changes do not settle how the finished game plays across its full campaign. Xbox Wire’s report is based on a brief demo of early Peru levels and interviews with three lead creatives. It is not a complete playthrough or a basis for definitive claims about the final game’s quality, difficulty, length, performance or accessibility.
Likewise, the available details establish particular redesigns, not the fate of every level, enemy, puzzle or story beat from the original.
