Tom Kim won the men’s individual golf gold at the Asian Games in Japan on October 3, 2026, finishing three strokes clear after a final-round 64. His victory was an individual title; China won the men’s team gold.
How Tom Kim won the gold medal
Kim, also identified as Kim Joo-hyung by Yonhap, closed the 72-hole stroke-play event with a six-under-par 64. The Associated Press reports his total as 18-under 262; the Asian Tour describes the winning margin as three strokes.
Kim said he tried to maintain his mindset and play his own game, according to Yonhap. Yonhap also reported that Kim saw a text from Tiger Woods on his phone on the morning of the final round. The report excerpt does not provide the message’s full text.
Men’s individual golf medalists
The AP reports that three golfers finished three strokes behind Kim and contested a playoff for the remaining medals. Japan’s Kazuki Higa won silver, and Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana took bronze.

South Korea did not win the team event
The individual and team competitions were separate. In the team event, each country fielded three players, with its best two scores counting each day. The AP reports China won team gold, South Korea took silver, and Japan earned bronze. Kim’s individual gold therefore did not mean South Korea won the team title.

What Kim said about the win
The AP quoted Kim saying, “Despite that, I’m more proud that I’m able to bring a medal for my country.” In the same report, he said he tried not to think about the pressure, focused on playing his best for his country, and hoped to carry what he felt that week into upcoming seasons.

The AP reports that Kim’s individual gold qualifies him for an exemption from South Korean military service. The same report says most able-bodied men in South Korea serve about 18 months.
