Tip Toe is a British miniseries about a gay bar owner and his electrician neighbor whose escalating conflict exposes the pressures facing queer people, families and men in contemporary Manchester. Judy Berman’s review reports that it premiered on Starz on October 2, 2026; it describes the drama as a forceful, earnest story of queer vulnerability and masculinity in crisis.

What is Tip Toe about?

As Judy Berman recounts in her review, the series follows Leo Struthers (Alan Cumming), a gay bar owner, and Clive Goss (David Morrissey), the electrician living next door. The men are approaching 60 and have shared a wall in Manchester for 14 years, but their lives are under different kinds of strain.

Clive faces financial pressure while living with his wife, Marie, and sons George and Saul. Leo is trying to run Spit & Polish after his longtime partner Curtis (Charlie Condou) leaves him for a woman. A dispute over an early-morning lockout brings the neighbors into reluctant contact; later, Leo hires Clive and Saul to do electrical work at the bar. Berman says that job draws their separate worlds together, including Saul’s connection to OnlyFans.

The review describes the main conflict as unfolding over 10 days. Flashbacks fill in what led to the confrontation, while the opening establishes Leo’s death. Those are plot details as reported by Berman, not a synopsis confirmed by an official series page.

Who made it, who stars in it, and where did it premiere?

Berman identifies Tip Toe as a British miniseries created by Russell T Davies. Cumming and Morrissey play the neighbors at its center. The review also names Charlie Condou as Curtis, Elizabeth Berrington as Stephanie, Paul Rhys as Melba, Iz Hesketh as Zee, Pooky Quesnel as Marie, Jackson Connor as George, and Joseph Evans as Saul.

The review reports a Starz premiere on October 2, 2026. It does not establish current availability, streaming terms, episode count, or which territories can watch it. Check Starz’s current listings for your region rather than assuming that the reported premiere means the series is available everywhere.

How does the series connect queerness and masculinity?

Berman reads the neighborly clash as a collision between queer vulnerability and masculinity in crisis. Leo is not presented as a flawless symbol: in her account, he can be charming and kind, but also pugnacious, prone to exaggeration, and self-centered. That mix makes the character’s struggle personal rather than purely emblematic.

The surrounding characters widen the story’s view of queer life. Berman describes Melba as gender-nonconforming and Zee as a trans bartender who navigates everyday transphobic violence. Economic insecurity, loneliness, family alienation and online exposure also feed the drama’s sense of present-day danger. The review’s account presents these as pressures shaping the characters, not as evidence about queer communities generally.

Berman compares the themes with Davies’s earlier It’s a Sin and Years & Years, while distinguishing Tip Toe for its earnest seriousness. She characterizes the series as less reliant on dark comedy in its treatment of social conflict. That is a critical comparison, not a claim that the shows share a plot or format.

What does Judy Berman praise—and criticize?

Berman praises the show’s conviction, its forceful anger and fear, and Cumming’s performance. She captures its refusal to soften its position with the sentence, “Tip Toe refuses to be misunderstood.”

Her reservations are equally clear: she says some dialogue can feel like speechifying, and that the finale’s escalation to Leo’s death strains credibility. The review therefore makes a case for the miniseries’ emotional intensity without treating every dramatic choice as persuasive.

One line quoted in the review is: “History tells us one thing—that blood and fire and retribution always happen. And right now it’s coming for us.” The passage does not identify the speaker, so it should not be attributed to a particular character on that basis alone.
