Shimon Hayut, known as Simon Leviev and the subject of Netflix’s The Tinder Swindler, says he is developing a dating app called Safe Love with identity checks and an emergency feature. Those are plans he described to Fox News Digital—not independently verified protections. The report said the app had not been confirmed as launched or tested, so its promised features should not be treated as proof that dating on it would be safe.
What Safe Love is supposed to do
In an interview published October 3, 2026, Fox News Digital reported that Hayut described Safe Love as a planned dating platform. He said users would upload government identification and take a selfie; profile photos would be rejected if they differed from that selfie by more than 15%. That figure is a proposed matching rule attributed to Hayut, not a measure of how well the system detects deception.
Hayut also described an SOS function that would immediately record audio and video, share the user’s location, and pass the information to law enforcement. The report attributes these specifications and the intended use of the feature to him. It does not establish how the feature would work in practice, what circumstances would trigger a response, or whether police would receive or act on the information.

Fox News Digital reported that Hayut characterized the app as being in a late regulatory phase and estimated it might be released within days or weeks. That was his projection, not confirmation of regulatory approval, app-store availability, or a launch date. The report said the outlet contacted Apple and Google for comment; it did not provide a response from either company. The reporting therefore does not establish that Safe Love is available to download or that its described features have been implemented or tested. Read Fox News Digital’s report.

Who is Shimon Hayut?
Netflix’s 2025 explainer identifies Shimon Hayut as the person known as Simon Leviev and describes The Tinder Swindler as a documentary about women he met through dating apps and defrauded. The film’s account should be understood as a documentary’s account, not as a claim that every detail it presents was established in court. Netflix’s explainer on the documentary.
Fox News Digital reported that Hayut confirmed convictions for fraud, theft, and forgery in Israel and Finland in 2015 and 2019. Details about sentences and time in custody in that report are attributed to his account and prior reporting it names; they should not be recast as independently checked court-record findings.

Explaining the idea for the app, Hayut told Fox News Digital: “The idea came from me being the Tinder Swindler,” he said. “They say I made the dating environment unsafe. So I thought, ‘All right. Let’s make it safe.’” That is his stated rationale, not evidence that the service will prevent scams or danger.

Can identity checks make a dating app safe?
An ID and selfie comparison could be one identity-checking measure, but it cannot establish that someone’s intentions are honest or that their claims about money, work, or personal circumstances are true. The sources cited here provide no independent evidence that Safe Love’s proposed checks would prevent romance fraud or physical harm. Nor does a proposed SOS recording and location-sharing feature establish that help would arrive.

The FBI defines romance scams as cases in which “a criminal uses a fake online identity to gain a victim’s affection and trust.” A profile that appears to match an ID photo is not, by itself, an answer to whether someone is building trust in order to exploit it. The FBI’s romance-scam guidance.

- Go slowly and ask questions. Be alert if a match pushes for rapid intimacy or gives inconsistent answers about their life.
- Check the profile. Search for profile photos and details; the FTC also recommends reverse-image-searching the profile picture and looking for similar scam reports.
- Be cautious about moving off the dating service. The FBI advises watching for attempts to shift communication elsewhere, especially when paired with pressure or secrecy.
- Do not send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person. The FBI says never to send money to a person known only online or by phone. The FTC also warns about urgent money requests and investment offers from love interests.
- Talk it over with someone you trust. An outside perspective can help when a match is urging secrecy, inventing an emergency, or asking you to invest.
The FTC’s February 2025 alert describes a common sequence: a match seeks private communication, avoids meeting, and eventually asks for money under an urgent pretext or proposes an investment. Its advice is not to send money or gifts to a love interest you have not met in person. Read the FTC consumer alert.

What to do if a match asks you for money
- Do not send money, gifts, or investment funds. Treat urgency, a request for secrecy, or a promise of future repayment as reasons to pause rather than pay.
- Verify the story independently. Search the person’s profile details and photos, and look for reports using similar wording or images.
- Get a second opinion. Share the situation with someone you trust before taking action.
- Use the service’s reporting tools if available. Do not assume a platform’s identity check or emergency feature substitutes for your own judgment or for contacting local emergency services when there is immediate danger.
