Times Mobility says unauthorized access to its Times Car web system affected approximately 6.6 million accounts. Separately, the company confirmed that identity-document images were exposed for approximately 1.6 million accounts. The two figures describe different scopes: the larger number is the overall affected-account population, not a claim that every account had a driver’s-license image exposed.
What happened in the Times Car breach?
Times Mobility, operator of the Times Car car-sharing service, said it detected unauthorized access to its web system at 9:07 a.m. on September 25, 2026. In its September 28 report, the company said a third party accessed the system and acquired some information stored there. Times Mobility’s September 28 incident report
The company said it blocked the route used for access and cut off communications from the attack source. It reported that access was no longer possible by 7:25 a.m. on September 26. Monitoring continued, and no new unauthorized access had been confirmed at the time of the September 28 report.
How many accounts were affected, and what do the figures mean?
Times Mobility reported approximately 6.6 million affected accounts. The count covers current and former Times Car members, people who applied but did not complete enrollment, and current and former Times Business Service members. It is an account count, not a count of people confirmed to have had every listed data field exposed.

What information may have been exposed?
Times Car’s September 25 initial notice listed information that might have been exposed: names, addresses, dates of birth, telephone numbers, email addresses, membership numbers, driver’s-license information, identity documents, corporate-member information, and linked-service IDs. The company warned that such information could be used for impersonation or phishing. September 25 initial notice
In a separate September 29 update, Times Mobility confirmed identity-document images had leaked for approximately 1.6 million accounts. The documents it identified included driver’s-license images and images of documents confirming a current address, such as utility bills. Where applicable, the affected images also included student ID cards for student-plan members or family documents for family-plan members. The confirmed image exposure does not mean all 6.6 million affected accounts had these documents exposed.

Did Times Car notify affected members?
Times Mobility said individual email notices had begun for members whose document images were confirmed exposed. It said more specific information about individual exposure would be provided after its investigation with external specialists. The public notices do not provide a complete account-by-account list of exposed fields, so use the operator’s individual notification or inquiry route to check your status.

What has Times Mobility said about the investigation?
The company said it was working with external specialists to investigate the cause and scope, and had reported the incident to Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission and police. It also said it would notify affected parties and publish further findings if relevant new facts emerged.
In its September 28 report, Times Mobility said Times Car services were continuing normally and that it had not confirmed public disclosure of the information or misuse connected with the incident as of that report. Those statements describe the status on September 28, 2026; they are not guarantees about what may be found later. The reviewed reports do not establish the precise technical entry method, full root cause, or complete exposure details for each account.

How to spot a Times Car breach scam
Times Mobility warned current and former members to be cautious about email, SMS messages, or calls pretending to come from Times Car. The company’s September 29 report says: “Our company will not ask for passwords or credit-card information by email, SMS, or telephone” (translated from Japanese). Steps Times Car members can take to secure an account
Times Car published separate account-security guidance on April 22, 2026, before this incident. It said rollout of two-step verification for individual members accessing or changing registered details would begin May 14, 2026. The guidance also recommended a hard-to-guess password, avoiding password reuse across services, checking registered details, and contacting the company about suspicious activity.
