Zenefits includes a Time & Attendance feature for recording work hours, so a separate tracker is not automatically necessary. The right option depends on how your employer configured time reporting: employees may clock in and out in real time, enter their start and end times, or report total hours. Deputy is a documented external integration that can send its hours to Zenefits Payroll.
How do you track time in Zenefits?
Start by checking whether your organization uses Zenefits Time & Attendance. The official Time & Scheduling help center groups Time & Attendance resources with scheduling and time-off topics, including guidance on “Time Worked” and time-worked scenarios.

- Self-reported total hours: submit the number of hours worked without entering separate start and end times.
Your employer or administrator selects the reporting method and configures approval timing. If you are unsure which workflow applies, ask your administrator or manager before entering time; using a different method may not match your organization’s setup.

Can you clock in with the Zenefits mobile app?
Possibly, but mobile clocking is conditional. Zenefits / TriNet training says employees who submit hours in real time using the clock-in/clock-out method “may be eligible” to use the mobile app. That is not a guarantee that mobile clocking is enabled for every employee or account. Confirm eligibility and configuration with your administrator.
Does Deputy integrate with Zenefits?
Deputy is a named app integration in Zenefits / TriNet training. The training describes Deputy as time-tracking software for creating schedules and says its hours can sync with the Payroll app. It does not establish whether the integration is enabled for your account, what setup prerequisites apply, or how data is mapped and approved. Check those points with your administrator before relying on the connection.

Which option should your organization use?
There is no established universal winner between Zenefits Time & Attendance and Deputy. Compare the options against your actual workflow and account configuration:
- Time entry: determine whether workers need real-time clock-in/out, self-reported start and end times, or total-hours reporting.
- Devices: consider whether employees need mobile clocking or whether an iPad TimeKeeper workflow is appropriate. The available material does not confirm that every method is available to every account.
- Scheduling: assess whether your organization needs Deputy’s scheduling capabilities as well as time tracking.
- Payroll and approvals: verify how submitted time is approved and, if using Deputy, whether its hours reach the correct Payroll workflow.
- Account fit: confirm that the integration is available and enabled for your Zenefits account before choosing it.
Do you need a separate physical time clock?
The documented workflows are software-based time entry, including real-time clocking, self-reporting, mobile eligibility in some cases, and an iPad TimeKeeper app. The available official materials do not establish a required dedicated physical clock or specify compatible clock hardware. Do not buy a generic time clock on the assumption that Zenefits requires or supports it; first ask your administrator what devices and workflows the account actually uses.
