For employee time and attendance in an SAP environment, the direct SAP option is SAP SuccessFactors Time Tracking. It records and validates work time, supports approvals and exceptions, and can send time data toward payroll. It is public-cloud SaaS, requires Employee Central, and is not part of the SAP S/4HANA suite. The best fit depends on your existing HR and payroll systems, work rules, and whether employees need to use physical clock terminals.
What is the time tracker for SAP?
SAP SuccessFactors Time Tracking is an employee time-and-attendance system, not simply a personal stopwatch or productivity timer. SAP describes web and mobile time entry, mobile clock-in and clock-out with geofencing, configurable validations, employee time-sheet attestation, manager approvals, exception handling, analytics, and payroll data flows. Employee Central is a prerequisite, and the product is deployed as public-cloud SaaS.
Its controls can be configured for policies such as overtime thresholds, rest periods, rounding, and flex time. SAP also lists rotating schedules, work that crosses midnight, recalculations, bulk approvals, alerts, reporting, and labor activity and cost allocation through an integrated time-sheet experience with S/4HANA. These are vendor-described capabilities; actual compliance with local labor rules, union agreements, or a particular employer’s policies depends on configuration and implementation. Does SAP SuccessFactors Time Tracking work with S/4HANA?
Yes, it can participate in SAP time-recording and ERP processes, but that does not make it an S/4HANA module. SAP states that SuccessFactors Time Tracking is not part of the S/4HANA suite. One documented option is consolidated time recording, which pairs S/4HANA Private Cloud Edition’s My Timesheet interface with SuccessFactors time processes.

Consolidated time recording has specific prerequisites
SAP’s documented scenario names S/4HANA Private Cloud Edition release 2023 FPS1, S4HCM 101 SP6, My Timesheet version 4.0, workforce-person integration, and enabled SuccessFactors Time Tracking. These are requirements for that documented integration pattern, not universal requirements for every SuccessFactors Time Tracking customer. SAP also notes that the first day of the week configured in the SuccessFactors time sheet must match the S/4HANA setting so time periods align, and that configuration is needed for successful entry replication.

Payroll connections depend on the target system
SAP describes payroll data flows, but the route depends on whether payroll is handled through SAP payroll, Employee Central Payroll, SAP ERP HCM, or a third-party system. SAP’s 1H 2026 documentation covers replication of Employee Central time data to SAP ERP HCM for SAP payroll. It states that this add-on is for integrating SAP cloud HR with SAP ERP applications; it is not licensed to connect non-SAP cloud HR products to SAP ERP HCM. Confirm which data is native, configured, replicated, or custom for your specific payroll path.
For integration and extension options, SAP points to implementation guidance, SAP Business Accelerator Hub, SAP Store, and SAP BTP. Its technical information describes connections with SAP and third-party solutions, on cloud or on premises, through preconfigured or custom integration. Can I connect an employee time clock to SAP?
SAP documents a path for external swipe machines and clock terminals through Clock In Clock Out. Time events from an external service are sent into Clock In Clock Out, paired, and reflected on the SuccessFactors time sheet. This establishes a supported integration pattern, not plug-and-play compatibility with every retail terminal or time clock. Before buying hardware, confirm the device, interface, event format, implementation responsibilities, and support arrangements with SAP or the integration provider.

How to choose a time-tracking setup for SAP
Compare real options against your environment and operating rules rather than choosing by the product label alone.

- Time capture: Decide whether employees enter time on web or mobile, use geofenced mobile clocking, use terminals or swipe devices, or need more than one capture method. Verify the exact integration path for external devices.
- Work rules: Map overtime, breaks, rest periods, rounding, flex time, shift premiums, rotating schedules, cross-midnight work, local rules, union agreements, and attestation requirements to the required configuration.
- Payroll and downstream flow: Identify the payroll destination and determine whether data moves through a native flow, configuration, replication, or a custom integration.
- Administration and scale: Evaluate approval volumes, exceptions, bulk approvals, alerts, analytics, reporting, scheduling, and labor-cost allocation needs.
- Extensions and implementation: Check regional fit, release compatibility, partner applications, APIs, and which party will own integration and support.
SAP lists SAP Workforce Forecasting and Scheduling by WorkForce Software and SAP Time and Attendance Management by WorkForce Software as solution extensions for additional scheduling and time-and-attendance capabilities. Treat them as options to evaluate, not automatic recommendations; confirm availability and suitability for your requirements. If your main need is reporting working time against order numbers and planned capacity, include order-based labor activity and cost allocation in the requirements you validate. SAP describes labor activity and cost allocation in its integrated time-sheet experience, but that alone does not establish fit for a particular project or order process.
