A time clock for an electrical crew has one job: record who worked, when they worked, which job the time belongs to, and how those hours reach payroll. The clock-in method matters less than whether it fits where your people start their day. Electrical contractors generally choose among four models: an individual phone app, a browser clock-in, a phone or landline workflow, or a shared PIN kiosk at a shop or job trailer. Each model handles signal, job coding, location evidence, and approvals differently, so the right pick depends on how your crew actually works.

What an electrician’s time clock needs to capture

Before comparing products, write down the records your business needs at the end of each pay period. Most electrical operations need the following:

  • Identity and timestamp for every clock-in and clock-out, tied to a named worker.
  • Job or service call for each block of time, if you need job-level reporting for billing or job review.
  • Hours outside the normal shift, such as loading the truck before the site opens, travel between jobs, or being on call.
  • Breaks and overtime, calculated the way your payroll process requires.
  • A correction trail showing who fixed a missed punch and when.
  • A handoff into payroll and, where needed, billing, whether that is a file export or an accounting sync.

If a product cannot show you how it handles each of these points, it is not yet a time clock for electricians, however many electrical-specific pages it advertises.

The four clock-in models

The table below summarizes how each model is described by the vendors reviewed for this article. Where a vendor page does not address a point, the table says so rather than assuming an answer.

Model How workers clock in Offline clocking Best fit What to check
Individual mobile app Each worker uses a personal phone, often with GPS attached to the clock event (BizyClock, FieldTimesheet) FieldTimesheet states that a punch fails without a signal; other vendors do not state offline behavior in the pages reviewed Crews that start at separate sites and have personal phones Every worker needs a compatible device; confirm whether a foreman can enter time for others
Browser clock-in Worker signs in through a web browser (Clockspot) Not stated Office staff and workers who prefer not to install an app Confirm browser and device support and how job selection works on a small screen
Phone or landline Worker calls a number to clock in and out (Clockspot) Not applicable as described; the call itself depends on coverage Workers without smartphones or with poor data service Confirm how job codes are entered by phone and how supervisors see those punches
Shared PIN kiosk Workers enter a PIN on a shared tablet at a shop or job trailer (BizyClock) Not stated Fixed locations such as a shop, yard, or trailer where crews gather The software must support kiosk and PIN entry; a shared PIN is weaker identity evidence than a personal login

In practice many contractors use more than one model. A shop kiosk for the morning crew and mobile clock-in for field technicians on remote service calls is a common combination, provided the software can keep all of those punches in one record.

Tying hours to the right job

Job coding is the feature that turns a time clock into a job-costing tool, and it is also the most often overstated. Clockspot describes job-linked clock events and job-hour categories. BizyClock describes tagging hours to jobs. Labor Sync describes filtering time records by employee, crew, job site, or date. These features organize hours, but they are not the same as project management.

Clockspot’s electrician page states that its job categories do not assign electricians to jobs, create work orders, track project progress, or calculate complete job cost. Plan for those functions separately if you need them.

Decide the following before you configure any job list:

  • Who creates job codes. A central office list avoids duplicate or misspelled jobs.
  • What happens when a worker moves between jobs mid-shift. Confirm whether the worker can switch the job code during a shift or must clock out and back in.
  • What counts as a job. A service call, a rough-in, and a final trim-out may need different codes if billing treats them differently.

What GPS at clock-in actually means

Several products describe GPS attached to clock events. FieldTimesheet records location at clock-in and clock-out, and BizyClock describes phone clock-in with GPS. That location is a record of where the device was at the moment of the punch. It is not continuous tracking of the worker, and it does not prove what work was completed.

Before you enable location, ask the vendor:

  • Is location collected only at clock events, or at other times too?
  • Who can view the location data, and for how long is it kept?
  • Can workers see their own punch locations?

Set your location policy with your employees in writing, and check it against the privacy rules that apply in your state or locality.

Corrections, approvals and the payroll handoff

Most time-clock problems show up after the punch, not during it. Work through these points in order when you evaluate a product:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Missed punch. Find out whether the worker, a foreman, or an office manager enters the correction, and whether the original punch is kept alongside the change.
  2. Approval. Determine whether a supervisor must approve hours before export. FieldTimesheet’s electrician page states that it has no supervisor approval step. If your payroll process requires sign-off, you will need a separate review step or a different product.
  3. Batch entry. Labor Sync’s electrical page describes batch entries by a foreman or manager. Check whether batch entries are logged the same way as individual punches.
  4. Export. FieldTimesheet describes CSV export. Confirm that the columns match what your payroll provider needs.
  5. Accounting sync. FieldTimesheet describes a QuickBooks Online sync that is one-way and started by an administrator rather than running automatically. Test that the sync sends the hours and job codes you expect before relying on it for a full payroll run.

Federal recordkeeping context

The U.S. Department of Labor announced its Timesheet App for Android in 2022, after an earlier iOS release. According to that announcement, the app tracks work hours, break time, and overtime, and calculates wages due. A worker can use it to keep personal work-hour records, and the release describes employer access to timekeeping information on a mobile device. The examples of recordable time include telework, travel, pre- or post-shift work, and on-call log-in time.

Two limits matter here. The release carries a notice that its information may no longer reflect current policy, so check the agency’s current guidance before relying on it. The app is also a tool for recording time, not a payroll system. It does not resolve state, local, union, prevailing-wage, or contract requirements that may apply to your crews. Confirm those rules for your jurisdiction and workforce.

BizyClock

BizyClock’s electrician page describes phone clock-in with GPS and a shared tablet kiosk that uses a PIN, with hours tagged to jobs. The page shows a publication date of July 15, 2026 and an update date of August 7, 2026. It does not name tablet models or technical requirements, so confirm device compatibility with the vendor.

FieldTimesheet

FieldTimesheet’s electrician page describes mobile clock-in, GPS at clock-in and clock-out, a work note field, billing backup, CSV export, and QuickBooks Online sync. The page states that punches need a signal and that the sync is one-way and administrator-initiated. The vendor lists $99 per month for up to 10 workers, plus $8 per additional worker per month. Prices change, so confirm the current figure directly with the vendor.

Labor Sync

Labor Sync’s electrical page describes time-stamped clock events, filtering by employee, crew, job site, or date, and batch entry by a foreman or manager. The page also makes compliance claims. Treat those as vendor marketing rather than an independent legal finding.

Choosing a shared kiosk tablet

A shared kiosk needs a tablet, and the time-clock software decides which tablets work. Ask the vendor for the operating system version, screen lock behavior, and whether the app runs in a locked kiosk mode. Any tablet that meets those requirements will do, so the choice is usually about durability for a shop or trailer environment and the mounting option you need. Keep the tablet on the same network or data plan you have tested for punches, since a kiosk that cannot send punches is just a shared screen.

A checklist before you commit

  • Map each crew to a clock-in model, and confirm each model works on the devices that crew already carries.
  • Confirm the job list ownership and mid-shift job changes in writing.
  • Get the vendor’s answer on offline punches and what happens to them when signal returns.
  • Confirm the approval step, correction trail, and whether a supervisor must sign off.
  • Run one full pay period in parallel with your current timesheets, and compare totals by employee and job before switching over.

A parallel run is the most reliable way to find gaps in punches, job codes, and exports before they affect a paycheck or an invoice.
