There is no evidence-based universal winner among TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Choose based on where your intended viewers already spend time, the stories you want to tell and the way you plan to earn. YouTube documents several Shorts discovery surfaces and an ad-revenue route for eligible creators; TikTok documents Creator Rewards for qualifying original videos over one minute and a separate program for brand opportunities. Current Instagram Reels monetization terms and regional eligibility are not established here, so a reliable three-way earnings comparison is not possible.
How the platforms differ for creators
The most useful comparison is not which app is “best” in the abstract. It is which one fits your audience, creative format and business model. The available platform documentation describes some specific features, but it does not establish a cross-platform ranking for reach, engagement or creator income.

Choose around the audience you want, not a supposed reach winner
No comparable, independent audience-size, average-reach or engagement-rate figures are established here. A high view count on one platform cannot show that it will outperform another for your topic. Start with the people you want to reach: where they already watch, what they expect from your videos and whether your existing community can help you build momentum.

Match the story to the format
YouTube allows Shorts up to three minutes, according to its current setup guidance. TikTok Creator Rewards, by contrast, requires qualifying videos to be longer than one minute; that is a rewards condition, not a claim that every TikTok video must be that long. The formats and current Reels limits are not compared here. Decide how much time your idea needs, then check the platform’s current creation rules before filming or editing to fit a particular limit.
Think about discovery beyond the feed
YouTube lists the Shorts Feed, Search, Home, channel pages, Subscriptions and notifications as ways viewers may discover Shorts. That gives a creator several documented routes for a short video to connect with a channel and its audience. It does not establish that YouTube has better discovery than TikTok or Reels, or that any one surface will deliver views for a particular upload.

How creator monetization differs—and what is not comparable
YouTube Shorts ad revenue has defined eligibility conditions
YouTube’s Partner Program eligibility page lists 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified public Shorts views during the previous 90 days for the Shorts-based ad-revenue route. Eligibility also depends on regional availability and account standing. A creator must accept the Shorts Monetization Module, and views must meet the Shorts monetization policies. A viral view total by itself does not establish eligibility or payment. Check the YouTube Partner Program requirements and Shorts monetization policies for the rules that apply to your account.
TikTok Creator Rewards targets original videos over one minute
TikTok’s March 18, 2024 Creator Rewards announcement listed these entry criteria: age 18 or older, at least 10,000 followers, at least 100,000 video views in the previous 30 days, an eligible region and a personal account in good standing. TikTok said originality, play duration, search value and audience engagement factor into rewards, and that qualifying videos must be original and longer than one minute. These are criteria reported in a 2024 announcement, not a guarantee that the same thresholds apply everywhere today. Check the current program rules and availability for your location before relying on them.

TikTok One is a separate brand-opportunity route
TikTok One lets eligible creators explore business opportunities and advertiser collaborations. This is distinct from Creator Rewards: a brand collaboration is not a platform payout, and access depends on regional launch, age and policy compliance. Do not assume Reels earnings match either program
Current Instagram Reels monetization terms and regional eligibility are not established here. That means there is no sound basis for ranking expected Reels earnings against the documented YouTube and TikTok routes. Before making income projections, verify the features and eligibility shown by Meta for your account and location. Keep platform payouts, brand deals and commerce income separate in your planning; they are different routes with different conditions.

How to compare results without being misled by view counts
Separate YouTube Shorts views from engaged views
Since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view when playback starts or replays, with no minimum watch-time requirement. YouTube retained “Engaged views” to represent viewers who chose to continue watching. The platform says the change did not directly affect YouTube Partner Program eligibility or Shorts ad-revenue sharing. When comparing your own performance over time, note which measure you are using; a raw view count under the newer method is not interchangeable with engaged views.

For TikTok and Reels, use the metrics and definitions presented in each platform’s current analytics rather than treating similarly named measures as identical. For a useful internal comparison, track a consistent set of outcomes—such as whether viewers keep watching, share or respond, and follow or take the next action you care about—alongside the platform’s own view measure. Compare videos with similar topics and goals, not a single outlier or raw totals across apps.

Cross-posting, originality and recommendation claims
Make each version meaningfully yours
YouTube announced on October 1, 2026 that it was adjusting Shorts recommendations to prioritize original content and reduce reach for reuploads without significant value added. TeamYouTube advised creators to bring their own voice, storytelling or point of view rather than making minor technical or template changes merely to alter a video. This is YouTube’s stated Shorts guidance; it should not be treated as evidence of how TikTok or Instagram ranks content. Read YouTube’s announcement on original Shorts.
If you publish an idea on more than one service, adapt the opening, framing, captions and call to action for the audience and format there. Keep the original project files so you can make platform-specific versions, and check the rights and music rules that apply on each service. Avoid assuming that an edit that satisfies one platform’s originality expectations will automatically satisfy another’s.
Do not chase a universal posting schedule
YouTube says its analyses found no correlation between upload intervals and view growth across uploads, and that publish time is not known to affect long-term performance. That is YouTube’s stated finding, not a rule established for TikTok or Instagram. Build a pace you can sustain and use your own results to adjust it; there is no basis here for prescribing a magic cross-platform posting frequency.
A practical way to choose where to start
- Pick the audience and outcome. Write down whom you want to reach and whether your main goal is audience growth, channel discovery, a platform payout, brand work or another business result.
- Choose the format that suits the idea. If the story benefits from up to three minutes, YouTube Shorts supports that length. If considering TikTok Creator Rewards, remember that its qualifying videos must be original and longer than one minute, and verify current local requirements. Check current Reels rules directly before building around them.
- Confirm the route to earnings. Review eligibility, location, account standing and the specific program terms. Treat YouTube ad sharing, TikTok Creator Rewards, TikTok One collaborations and any Instagram monetization feature as distinct opportunities.
- Run a consistent comparison. Publish a small set of comparable ideas in versions suited to each platform. Record the date, format, platform-defined views, continued watching and the actions that matter to your goal. Avoid declaring a winner from one viral result.
- Invest where the evidence from your own audience is strongest. Compare repeatable outcomes and the effort needed to produce them. Keep another platform in the mix if it serves a distinct audience or business purpose rather than expecting every post to perform identically everywhere.
What the evidence does—and does not—say
The official guidance cited here establishes concrete Shorts discovery surfaces and YouTube eligibility conditions, and describes TikTok’s Creator Rewards criteria as announced in 2024 plus TikTok One’s creator opportunity. It does not establish a comparative reach ranking, typical creator income, or current Instagram Reels monetization eligibility. Those unknowns matter: choose by audience fit and observed results, and verify program terms for your account and region rather than projecting from another creator’s views or a platform’s promotional claim.
