A clean score from a resume checker means that one tool, running its own rules, found nothing it wanted to flag. It does not show that the file will be read correctly by an employer’s applicant tracking system, and it says nothing about a tool that never ran. The account behind this title, three checkers giving a clean result with one of them missing, cannot be verified from the details given, because no tool names, versions, device, or resume file are reported. The broader lesson still holds: resume checkers measure different things, so agreement between them tells you less than it appears to.

What a green score actually tested

Most people lump resume checks together under the word “ATS.” In practice, the checks answer different questions. Some look at whether the text can be selected and copied. Some show you the text a parser extracted. Some apply formatting rules such as headings, dates, and contact details. Others compare the resume’s wording with a specific job posting. A single score can blend several of these, which is why two green results may not have tested the same thing.

Diagnostic method What it inspects What it can miss How to read its result
Manual copy-and-paste check Whether the text layer exists and what order it comes out in Judgment about how a specific parser handles the layout Good evidence of readable text; you decide what is missing
Parser or extracted-text view The text a parser pulled from the file, including reading order How other parsers, including employer systems, behave Shows what that tool extracted, not what every system will extract
Rule-based formatting checker Sections, dates, job titles, employers, contact fields, layout risks Heuristic rules can flag layouts that parse acceptably or miss ones that do not A list of issues to inspect, not a verdict
Job-description keyword matcher Overlap between resume words and the posting’s terms Meaning, context, and whether a keyword is used accurately Only meaningful against the one posting it was run on

Why one checker can pass a resume another flags

ResumeATS publishes its methodology. It describes its score as an estimate built from a weighted mix of checks: text extraction, structure, content rules, and optional job-description keyword coverage. Its own documentation says some of these checks are heuristic. A heuristic may flag a layout that parses fine, or miss one that does not. Its score bands are specific to that product, so a number from one checker cannot be compared with a number from another.

ResumeATS’s published rubric allows a maximum of 129 points across all checks that apply to a given file. Its labels are:

  1. Export the final PDF from the exact file you will upload. If you edited the resume after running any checker, export it again.
  2. Copy the text. Open the PDF in your viewer, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on macOS), then Ctrl+C (Cmd+C). If nothing selects, the page is likely an image or scan without a text layer.
  3. Paste into a plain-text editor. Use Notepad on Windows, or TextEdit on macOS with Format > Make Plain Text enabled before pasting.
  4. Read top to bottom. Your name, contact details, section headings, employers, job titles, and date ranges should appear in your intended order, with each date attached to the correct job.
  5. Look for gaps. Phone numbers or email addresses shown only as icons, text inside graphics, and header or footer content are common places where text goes missing.
  6. Compare with the checker’s extracted-text view, if it has one. Inspect that output directly rather than relying on the score alone.
  7. Follow the employer’s requested format. If the posting names a file type, use it. If it names none, keep a native, text-based PDF.

Layout choices that change what a parser sees

  • Image-only or scanned PDFs may have no searchable text at all. The page looks right to you and reads as empty to a parser.
  • Columns and positioned text can come out in an unexpected order, so a job title may appear after the wrong employer.
  • Dates and titles sometimes get separated from the entries they describe, which is one reason a checker may report missing dates even when they are visible on the page.
  • Icon-only contact details may not appear as ordinary text in the extracted output.

ATS Resume Tools treats a single-column layout as the conservative default when the target parser cannot be tested, because columns add reading-order risk. That guidance does not establish that every two-column resume fails. If you use columns, check the extracted text before deciding whether the layout is a problem.

A troubleshooting branch for conflicting results

  • One checker flags missing dates, but your copied text shows them. Look at reading order and whether dates sit beside their job entries. The flag may come from a heuristic, or the layout may be splitting the entry.
  • Your copied text is scrambled. Fix the layout first. Changing wording will not repair the order a parser reads in.
  • Every checker agrees and the copied text is clean. The file is readable in the sense these tools measure. Any remaining question depends on the employer’s own requirements, which no generic checker can see.
  • A keyword matcher reports gaps. Those gaps are relative to one posting. Judge them against the job description, and only add terms that accurately describe work you have done.

What a vendor says about parsers

Jobscan’s guidance, written by Sydney Myers, identified in the article as Jobscan’s Senior Content Manager, and dated November 10, 2023, puts the idea this way: “If the Jobscan resume scanner can’t see it, the ATS probably won’t see it either.” The sentence is useful as a reminder that content a scanner cannot read is at risk. It is still a vendor’s statement, not independent proof of how any particular employer’s system works. Jobscan also publishes a troubleshooting article about why its scanner may report missing dates. Because that article predates the current date by nearly three years, check whether the tool’s behavior has changed before relying on its specific advice.

What no checker can tell you

A generic checker cannot see how an employer has configured its hiring software, which screening questions it asks, or whether a person reviews the application. Scores can also change as tools update their rules. Treat any checker as one diagnostic step. The text you copy from your final PDF, read in order, is the most reliable evidence you can gather yourself.

If you do run several tools, record the name, version, and date of each result along with the file you tested. That record makes it possible to see which disagreements are real and which come from different checks.
