The findings apply to those versions and the reviewer’s lab—not to current products or equipment.
What the 2004 review compared
Paul Venezia’s InfoWorld review examined three enterprise tools for managing configurations across mixed network-device fleets. The article focused on the practical demands of maintaining inventory, controlling configuration changes, checking policy compliance, and reporting on device activity. Its conclusions are historical: it does not establish whether any product is available, supported, or compatible with equipment today.
The review’s overall scores were TrueControl 3.0 at 8.4, DeviceAuthority Suite 2.0 at 8.1, and Tripwire for Network Devices 3.0 at 6.5. Those are InfoWorld’s ratings for this 2004 review, not current benchmarks. The scorecard categories included reporting, value, setup, interoperability, performance, ease of use, and management.

TrueControl 3.0: strongest overall change control
TrueControl’s defining strength in the review was its combination of change-management controls, policy checks, and reporting. It monitored devices using polling and SNMP traps alongside a syslog server, and could alert administrators when configurations changed. Engineers could route changes through its syslog and SSH/Telnet proxy workflow, where they could be prompted to add comments. That provided an audit trail around changes rather than only a way to detect differences afterward.

The policy-assurance feature let administrators define rules and check device classes against them. Venezia considered TrueControl the most complete of the three tools and credited it with the strongest reporting, including inventory and change information. The price premium and the syslog scalability concern were the trade-offs described in the article; neither should be read as a present-day price or performance assessment.
DeviceAuthority Suite 2.0: most flexible scripting
DeviceAuthority paired inventory and auditing functions with an Update Module for hands-on troubleshooting and configuration work. Administrators could record commands and turn them into editable Perl, JavaScript, or TCL/Expect scripts. The review says those scripts could be used for individual or mass changes, as well as scheduled operating-system updates. That made DeviceAuthority the clearest fit in this comparison for teams seeking repeatable scripted administration.

The reviewer praised its support for the devices tested in the lab and the Update Module’s capabilities. Its interface was split between Web and Win32 components, and the inventory interface’s Internet Explorer 5.5-or-later requirement is strictly a historical detail of Suite 2.0.
Tripwire for Network Devices 3.0: baseline monitoring
TND’s model began with an inventoried device’s configuration saved as a baseline. Later polling and SNMP traps could identify deviations; administrators could receive notifications and configure the product to restore the baseline. This is a distinct emphasis from DeviceAuthority’s scripted mass changes or TrueControl’s proxy-based change comments and policy checks.

Venezia found TND’s interface tedious in some areas and its built-in capabilities less broad than those of its competitors. In particular, the review notes missing mass-configuration scripting and less detailed built-in reporting. Its lower score reflects that 2004 evaluation, not an assessment of a current offering.
What the lab did—and did not—show
The reviewer reported that all three products failed to inventory a Dell PowerConnect 3300 switch accurately in the lab, while other devices were generally inventoried successfully. This is a specific observation about one model in one historical test. It does not establish a broader problem with Dell switches or say anything about current hardware compatibility.

Venezia summarized the distinction this way: “Among the three solutions I tested, only TrueControl and DeviceAuthority truly offer centralized control over network device configuration.” The statement refers to the three versions he tested in 2004.

- For scripted changes across many devices: DeviceAuthority had the strongest described workflow, including command recording, editable scripts, and scheduled updates.
- For detecting deviations from a saved configuration: TND emphasized baselines, notifications, and restoration.
