You can build a free toolkit for image editing, vector graphics, and page layout—but that does not mean three apps will reproduce Adobe’s tools or your existing workflows exactly. GIMP and Inkscape are documented options for image manipulation and vector work; Scribus is a plausible page-layout counterpart, though its current capabilities and compatibility need checking against official documentation before relying on it for production.
The claim that only one app “felt like a downgrade” depends on which tasks and files you tried. Without a documented firsthand comparison, it is more useful to assess the three replacements by job, test your own projects, and decide where any trade-offs matter.
Which free apps cover the three jobs?
Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign serve different kinds of work. Replacing them is therefore a toolkit decision, not a search for one free suite with identical features.

These candidates address different needs. A photo editor is not a vector editor, and neither is automatically a substitute for a multi-page layout application.
Where will the replacements feel different?
Image editing: GIMP is the candidate to try for Photoshop work
GIMP’s own description covers photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It does not claim to duplicate Photoshop’s feature set or workflow. Identify the operations you use regularly—such as specific adjustments, effects, layer behaviors, or handoffs—and test those in GIMP with real project files.
Krita may suit a different image workflow, particularly digital painting. Its feature page lists customizable workspaces, brushes, vector and text tools, animation, multiple layer types, color management, PSD loading and saving, and scripting. PSD support alone does not establish complete interchange fidelity, and Krita should not be assumed to be the best general-purpose photo compositor on that basis. Krita features

Vector graphics: Inkscape centers on SVG
Inkscape’s main format is SVG, while its overview lists import and export support for AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG. If you exchange Illustrator files with clients or coworkers, test the exact files and elements you rely on rather than assuming that a listed format will preserve every effect, font, or editable object. Page layout: verify Scribus against your actual output
Scribus is a reasonable application to investigate for an InDesign replacement, but the current official feature and compatibility details needed to make precise claims about print production or file support are not established here. Before moving a publication workflow, confirm that the current Scribus version supports the page features, export settings, and handoff requirements your work needs. Do not assume it will open or preserve InDesign documents as editable projects.
Are there alternatives for specific workflows?
Krita for painting and illustration
Krita’s feature list includes painting brushes and tools alongside layer, color-management, animation, and scripting features. Its download page currently lists version 5.3.4, released September 15, 2026, and Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads. The same page lists 4 GB minimum RAM and 16 GB recommended, and says any graphics tablet compatible with the operating system can be used. Photopea for browser-based editing
Photopea describes itself as a free online photo editor. Its site says files stay on the user’s device and are not uploaded, and lists PSD opening and saving, layers, masks, adjustment layers, paths, vector editing, and other formats. These are vendor claims; people with privacy or offline constraints should assess the service’s current behavior and their own setup. Photopea official page
How to decide whether you can switch
- List the work, not just the app names. Separate photo manipulation, vector illustration, and page layout. Note the operations you use often and the files you must deliver.
- Try representative projects. Open copies of real files in the candidate app. Check editability, fonts, effects, layers, color, and export results that matter to that project.
- Test the handoff. If a client, printer, or colleague needs a particular format, ask what they require and inspect the exported file in the receiving workflow. A format appearing in a product’s list is not proof that every document survives conversion unchanged.
- Check practical constraints. Consider your operating system and hardware, whether you need offline access, how much retraining the workflow takes, and whether collaborators can work with the resulting files.
- Keep a fallback until the test passes. Do not abandon an existing application for a time-sensitive project until the replacement has handled the specific tasks and deliverables you depend on.
What does “free alternative” establish—and what does it not?
GIMP describes itself as community free software under the GNU General Public License; Inkscape describes itself as free and open-source software. Those descriptions establish the projects’ stated licensing and distribution character, not identical features, file fidelity, collaboration, or ease of use. Likewise, an application being free does not by itself establish that it fits every professional or production workflow.
