Yes: researchers reported a triangular ring of three bismuth atoms that sustains aromatic ring currents in complexes supported by uranium or thorium. The unusual feature is that the currents are described as being dominated by σ electrons, rather than the familiar π-electron picture of benzene. The finding is a specific example of all-metal aromaticity—not evidence that every metal ring behaves this way or that chemists use a single definition of aromaticity.
What the researchers found
The study, titled “All-metal aromaticity of cyclo-Bi₃³⁻ in diuranium and dithorium inverse-sandwich-type complexes,” was published in Nature Chemistry, according to the University of Manchester’s account. It reports the cyclo-Bi₃³⁻ unit: a three-bismuth-atom ring held between two uranium centers or, in a separate complex, two thorium centers. University of Manchester account.
An inverse-sandwich complex places the ring between two metal centers, with the supporting metals arranged on opposite sides of it. In this case, the uranium or thorium framework stabilizes the otherwise unusual triangular bismuth unit.
How the team assessed the ring
X-ray crystallography established the triangular arrangement and symmetry of the bismuth atoms. To investigate electronic behavior, the researchers combined magnetic measurements and spectroscopy with computational modelling. The conclusion about aromaticity rests on this body of structural, experimental, and computational evidence; it is not simply a shape observed in a crystal.

The University of Manchester describes the dithorium complex’s unusually strong diamagnetism as an additional observable associated with the ring-current behavior. The evidence therefore includes measured properties as well as calculations used to interpret how electrons circulate. University of Manchester account.
Why this is called σ-aromaticity
Aromaticity is a way chemists describe certain unusually stabilized cyclic electron systems. In the standard introductory example, benzene’s six carbon atoms form a ring with a delocalized π-electron system above and below the ring. That familiar picture is useful, but it is not the only way cyclic electron delocalization can be discussed.

In the bismuth ring, the reported current is characterized as σ-dominated. The σ electrons involved in Bi–Bi bonding are also described as contributing to circulation around the ring. Chemical & Engineering News reports that calculations found a ring current comparable to, and in some cases greater than, benzene’s; that is a reported computational comparison, not a general measured statistic for aromatic rings. How the bismuth ring differs from benzene
| Feature | Cyclo-Bi₃³⁻ complexes | Benzene |
|---|---|---|
| Ring atoms | Three bismuth atoms | Six carbon atoms |
| Supporting structure | Uranium or thorium centers in an inverse-sandwich arrangement | No comparable actinide-center framework is part of the familiar benzene example |
| Electron contribution emphasized | σ electrons, including electrons involved in Bi–Bi bonding | The familiar aromatic picture emphasizes delocalized π electrons |
| Evidence highlighted in the accounts | Crystallography, magnetic and spectroscopic evidence, and computational modelling | Not a focus of the reported bismuth study |
This comparison highlights what is unusual about the reported system; it does not make the two rings interchangeable. Aromaticity involves several related ways of describing bonding and electron behavior, so one comparison does not settle every definition.

The work is fundamental inorganic and actinide chemistry: it demonstrates a distinctive bonding and magnetic behavior in a carefully stabilized molecular system. The cited accounts do not establish a consumer application, product, or practical use for the complexes.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Bismuth is a chemical element with the symbol Bi and atomic number 83.
- The iridescent rainbow of colors is caused by light scattering off thin layers of bismuth oxide formed when the surface of the hot bismuth reacts with the air.
- Crystal bismuth will be oxidized during the production process, resulting in a variety color of the oxide film, it is very bright!
- Metal bismuth is a magnificent crystal which grows up in artificial environment. Each piece of bismuth crystal is unique and different from all other ones, so it's very meaningful to consider it as a gift to your relatives, friends, teacher and classmates.
- Bismuth chemically resembles arsenic and antimony. Bismuth is the most naturally diamagnetic element, and has one of the lowest values of thermal conductivity among metals.
- It supports a claim about this reported cyclo-Bi₃³⁻ system, not a general claim that all heavy-element rings are aromatic.
- The ring’s structure was established crystallographically, while its electronic interpretation draws on multiple kinds of evidence, including computational analysis.
- Calling the behavior σ-aromaticity describes the electron contribution emphasized in these accounts; it should not be read as proof that aromaticity has one universally accepted definition.
