The new AirPods lineup following the AirPods 4 announcement now has four current Apple U.S. models: AirPods 4 at $129, AirPods 4 with ANC at $179, AirPods Pro 3 at $249, and AirPods Max 2 at $549, based on Apple storefront prices observed on August 16, 2026. Choose by fit first: open-ear, sealed in-ear, or over-ear.
AirPods 4 were announced on September 9, 2024, but they are no longer the newest products in Apple’s headphone family. AirPods Pro 3 arrived in 2025 and AirPods Max 2 arrived in 2026, so the practical buying decision in 2026 is among four current models rather than simply AirPods 4 versus AirPods Pro 2.
Key takeaways
- Apple’s current U.S. lineup has four core products: AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2.
- AirPods 4 cost $129 and provide the lowest-cost current entry to Apple’s open-ear earbuds, but they do not include Active Noise Cancellation.
- AirPods 4 with ANC cost $179, adding noise control and wireless charging while retaining an open fit rather than the sealed fit of AirPods Pro 3.
- AirPods Pro 3 cost $249 and add silicone ear tips, five tip sizes, an IP57 rating, in-ear heart-rate sensors, and the most comprehensive current earbud feature set.
- AirPods Max 2 cost $549 and are over-ear headphones, so they are a separate choice for listeners who prioritize over-ear comfort and presentation over portability.
What is the new AirPods lineup following the AirPods 4 announcement?
The new AirPods lineup following the AirPods 4 announcement consists of four current Apple-sold models in the U.S. as of the August 16, 2026 research snapshot. Apple’s support documentation identifies AirPods 4 as 2024 products, AirPods Pro 3 as a 2025 product, and AirPods Max 2 as a 2026 product in its AirPods identification guide.
| Model | Form factor | Apple U.S. price observed | Noise control | Water-resistance rating | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 4 | Open-ear earbuds | $129 | No ANC | IP54 | Lowest-cost current AirPods and quiet environments |
| AirPods 4 with ANC | Open-ear earbuds | $179 | ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode | IP54 | People who dislike ear tips but want moderate noise control |
| AirPods Pro 3 | In-ear earbuds with silicone tips | $249 | Premium noise-control feature set | IP57 | Travel, noisy environments, exercise, and advanced features |
| AirPods Max 2 | Over-ear headphones | $549 | Adaptive Audio and other over-ear features | Separate over-ear category | Long listening sessions and users who specifically want over-ear headphones |
The prices above are Apple U.S. prices observed during the August 2026 research pass, not guaranteed prices at every retailer. Apple’s U.S. accessories store should be checked again before publication or purchase because prices, promotions, inventory, and regional availability can change.

What changed after Apple announced AirPods 4?
Apple announced two AirPods 4 versions on September 9, 2024, and made them available on September 20, 2024. The announcement described both models as open-ear earbuds: standard AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. Apple’s AirPods 4 announcement also covered hearing-health features for AirPods Pro 2 and updated AirPods Max colors.
The lineup subsequently changed in two important ways. AirPods Pro 3 became the current premium earbud generation in 2025, replacing AirPods Pro 2 as the main Pro comparison. AirPods Max 2 became the current over-ear model in 2026. A 2024 article that stops at AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and the first-generation AirPods Max is therefore incomplete for a 2026 buyer.
| Date | Lineup event | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| September 9, 2024 | Apple announced AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC | The entry-level AirPods family split into standard and ANC configurations. |
| September 20, 2024 | AirPods 4 became available | Both open-ear AirPods 4 models entered the market. |
| 2025 | AirPods Pro 3 joined the lineup | AirPods Pro 2 became a previous-generation product. |
| 2026 | AirPods Max 2 joined the lineup | The current over-ear AirPods category moved to the second-generation Max. |
How are AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC different?
AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC share the open-ear design and core H2-based platform, but the $50 difference buys active noise control, more listening modes, and a more capable charging case.
| Feature | AirPods 4 | AirPods 4 with ANC |
|---|---|---|
| Apple U.S. price observed | $129 | $179 |
| Fit | Open-ear; no silicone seal | Open-ear; no silicone seal |
| Chip | H2 | H2 |
| Noise control | No ANC | ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness |
| Battery rating | Up to 5 hours per charge; up to 30 hours with the case | Up to 5 hours per charge; up to 30 hours with the case, or up to 4 hours per charge and 20 hours with the case when ANC is enabled |
| Charging case | USB-C; no wireless charging in the standard configuration | USB-C wireless charging case; supports Apple Watch and Qi-certified chargers |
| Find My case speaker | Not listed as a standard feature | Included |
| Resistance | IP54 dust, sweat, and water resistance | IP54 dust, sweat, and water resistance |
Apple’s AirPods 4 technical specifications rate both models for up to five hours of listening on one charge and up to 30 hours with the charging case, while the ANC configuration is rated for up to four hours per charge and up to 20 hours with the case when ANC is enabled. “Up to” is important: volume, calls, settings, feature use, environment, and battery age affect actual runtime.
Standard AirPods 4 are the value choice for an open fit, Apple integration, and relatively quiet surroundings. AirPods 4 with ANC are the better $179 choice when wireless charging, a Find My case speaker, and occasional noise reduction are worth $50. The open construction still leaves the ear canal less sealed than AirPods Pro 3, so AirPods 4 with ANC should not be treated as equivalent to a sealed in-ear noise-isolating design.
Are AirPods 4 with ANC or AirPods Pro 3 better?
AirPods Pro 3 are the stronger choice for isolation, noisy travel, exercise, and advanced earbud features, while AirPods 4 with ANC are the better choice for listeners who want noise control without silicone ear tips. The $70 price difference is primarily a fit-and-capability decision, not merely a chip upgrade.
| Decision factor | AirPods 4 with ANC | AirPods Pro 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Price observed in Apple U.S. store | $179 | $249 |
| Fit | Open-ear design | Sealed in-ear design with silicone tips |
| Ear-tip choices | No silicone tips | Five ear-tip sizes |
| Isolation expectation | Moderate noise control, limited by open fit | Stronger passive isolation and a premium noise-control proposition |
| Resistance | IP54 | IP57 |
| Health and fitness hardware | Does not have the Pro 3 in-ear heart-rate sensor system | In-ear heart-rate sensors and more advanced fitness and hearing-oriented capabilities |
| Charging case | USB-C wireless charging case | USB-C MagSafe Charging Case |
| Best match | Open-fit comfort and awareness | Travel, loud environments, exercise, and users comfortable with ear tips |
AirPods 4 with ANC may feel more comfortable to people who dislike the pressure, warmth, or sensation of silicone tips. An open fit can also make surrounding sounds easier to hear, although the trade-off can include weaker passive isolation, less consistent bass, and a less secure fit depending on ear shape.

- LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
AirPods Pro 3’s silicone seal can improve isolation and bass consistency, but the sealed fit is not universally comfortable. AirPods Pro 3 are not automatically the right choice for someone who cannot tolerate in-ear headphones, even though AirPods Pro 3 have the more comprehensive feature set.
Apple lists five AirPods Pro 3 ear-tip sizes in its AirPods identification and model information. A correct tip fit matters for comfort, seal, noise control, and sound consistency. The IP57 rating is also more protective than the IP54 rating on either AirPods 4 model, but neither rating makes the earbuds waterproof or suitable for swimming.
What does AirPods Pro 3 add?
AirPods Pro 3 are Apple’s premium current earbuds, combining an in-ear fit with a higher IP57 rating, heart-rate sensing, five tip sizes, and the Pro line’s most extensive noise-control, fitness, and hearing-related feature set.
- Sealed in-ear fit: Silicone tips create passive isolation that open-ear AirPods 4 cannot provide.
- Five tip sizes: Different tip sizes make it easier to find a stable seal, although personal comfort still varies.
- IP57 resistance: The rating offers a higher level of dust and water resistance than IP54, but it is not a promise that the earbuds can be used underwater.
- In-ear heart-rate sensors: The sensors support the model’s fitness-oriented feature set, subject to compatible hardware and software.
- Hearing-related functions: Availability, eligibility, and regulatory support vary by region and device.
- Find My requirements: Apple’s technical specifications state that some Find My functionality requires iOS 26 or later.
See Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 technical specifications for the model’s documented hardware and software requirements. Features such as hearing tools, Siri capabilities, Live Translation, Personalized Spatial Audio, and fitness tracking can depend on the Apple device, operating-system version, firmware, language, region, and—in some cases—Apple Intelligence support.

What is AirPods Max 2, and who should buy it?
AirPods Max 2 are Apple’s current premium over-ear headphones, not oversized alternatives to the in-ear AirPods Pro 3. AirPods Max 2 make sense for listeners who explicitly want over-ear comfort and a larger headphone experience and who accept the $549 price and reduced portability.
| AirPods Max 2 characteristic | What it means for buyers |
|---|---|
| Form factor | Over-ear headphones for home, office, travel, and long listening sessions |
| Price observed in Apple U.S. store | $549 |
| Connection and charging | USB-C connector and Smart Case |
| Documented features | Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and head gestures |
| Colors listed by Apple | Midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange |
| Main trade-off | Much larger and less convenient to carry than earbuds |
AirPods Max 2 are better suited to long indoor listening sessions, office use, and travel where over-ear comfort matters. AirPods Max 2 are less suitable for workouts, hot-weather exercise, compact travel, or buyers with a budget below $300. AirPods Max 2 should not be called the best AirPods for everyone; AirPods Max 2 are the best fit only for someone who wants premium over-ear headphones.
Apple’s AirPods Max comparison information identifies AirPods Max 2 as a distinct over-ear product category. The different form factor means most shoppers should decide between earbuds and over-ear headphones before comparing individual features.

What happened to AirPods Pro 2 and older AirPods?
AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and the first-generation AirPods Max are previous-generation or retailer-dependent products rather than the four-model current Apple core lineup. Some may remain available through authorized retailers, clearance channels, or refurbished programs, and Apple comparison pages can show legacy products alongside current models.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAirPods Pro 2 can still be attractive when the discount is substantial, but the buyer should compare the discounted price with the $249 AirPods Pro 3 price. Before buying older stock, check whether the product is new or refurbished, whether the case uses USB-C, how much warranty remains, the retailer’s return policy, and whether the seller is authorized.
| Product status | How to interpret it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Current Apple lineup | AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Max 2 | Current price, configuration, and regional stock |
| Previous-generation retailer stock | Older AirPods may still be sold outside Apple’s core lineup | Generation, case connector, warranty, seller, and return terms |
| Refurbished or clearance product | Potentially lower cost but not equivalent to new retail stock | Refurbisher, battery condition, warranty, included accessories, and return window |
Apple’s comparison interface may include older models, so appearing on a comparison page does not by itself prove that a product remains actively promoted or sold by Apple in every region.
Which AirPods should you buy for each use case?
| If you say… | Recommended model | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| “I want the cheapest current AirPods.” | AirPods 4 | $129 is the lowest observed Apple U.S. price, and the open fit avoids silicone tips. |
| “I hate silicone ear tips.” | AirPods 4 or AirPods 4 with ANC | Both models use an open-ear design; choose ANC if noise control and wireless charging matter. |
| “I want ANC but not in-ear tips.” | AirPods 4 with ANC | It adds ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, and Conversation Awareness without sealing the ear canal. |
| “I fly or work in loud places.” | AirPods Pro 3 | The sealed in-ear fit provides passive isolation in addition to the Pro noise-control system. |
| “I want the most capable current Apple earbuds.” | AirPods Pro 3 | It combines the Pro fit with five tips, IP57 resistance, heart-rate sensing, and advanced fitness and hearing-oriented features. |
| “I exercise and want extra resistance.” | AirPods Pro 3 | IP57 is a higher rating than the IP54 rating on AirPods 4 models, though neither is waterproof. |
| “I want over-ear headphones.” | AirPods Max 2 | AirPods Max 2 are the dedicated over-ear option, priced at $549. |
| “I use Android.” | Choose based on Bluetooth basics and verify needed features | AirPods can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple-specific functionality may be limited. |
The most useful price decisions are incremental. Moving from AirPods 4 to AirPods 4 with ANC costs $50 and adds noise control and wireless charging. Moving from AirPods 4 with ANC to AirPods Pro 3 costs $70 and adds a sealed fit, five tip sizes, IP57 resistance, heart-rate sensing, and more advanced Pro capabilities. Moving from AirPods Pro 3 to AirPods Max 2 costs $300 and changes the product category from earbuds to over-ear headphones.
Are AirPods 4 water-resistant or waterproof?
AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC have IP54 dust, sweat, and water resistance, while AirPods Pro 3 have IP57 resistance; neither rating means the product is waterproof or safe for swimming.
- Do not swim while wearing AirPods.
- Do not charge AirPods or their case while they are wet.
- Dry the earbuds before placing them in the charging case.
- Remember that resistance can decline with normal wear.
- Saltwater, soap, sunscreen, and pool chemicals can add risk beyond ordinary sweat or splashes.
Apple bases specifications and resistance ratings on controlled testing, so ratings are not guarantees for every environment or every unit. Apple’s AirPods 4 technical specifications and care guidance are the appropriate reference for the documented limits.

AirPods can operate as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Android and other non-Apple users may not receive the complete Apple feature set. Automatic pairing, seamless switching, Siri features, Find My enhancements, Personalized Spatial Audio, hearing functions, Live Translation, and fitness features can require compatible Apple hardware, operating systems, firmware, languages, regions, or Apple Intelligence support.

Compatibility is especially important for newer features. Live Translation and hearing-related functions should be checked against Apple’s current device, language, regional, and regulatory requirements before purchase. AirPods Pro 3 Find My functionality also has an iOS 26-or-later requirement according to Apple’s technical specifications.
For a non-Apple phone, buy AirPods primarily for their basic Bluetooth audio and microphone functions unless the specific Apple features you need have been verified for your devices. Apple’s AirPods 4 support documentation notes that functionality may be limited with non-Apple devices.

Apple’s battery figures are maximum estimates under stated test conditions, not guaranteed everyday runtimes. AirPods 4 are rated for up to five hours per charge and 30 hours with the case; AirPods 4 with ANC are rated for up to four hours per charge and 20 hours with the case when ANC is enabled.
Actual battery life varies with listening volume, ANC use, call time, environmental conditions, device settings, feature use, and battery age. The AirPods 4 technical specifications also state that the USB-C charging cable is sold separately, which matters to first-time buyers who do not already have a compatible cable.
What else should you consider before ordering?
Apple advertises engraving on eligible AirPods purchases, Apple Store pickup and delivery options that vary by location and inventory, and interest-free Apple Card Monthly Installments for eligible customers and purchases. Engraving may be useful for gifts but can complicate returns or resale. Availability, eligibility, and terms should be confirmed on the Apple AirPods 4 product page or the relevant checkout page.
Apple’s store is not automatically the best price. An authorized retailer may offer a materially lower price, but compare the exact generation and model number, seller status, authenticity, warranty, return policy, and whether the product is new, refurbished, or old stock. Retailer promotions should be treated as dated offers rather than permanent lineup prices.

There is no universal winner. The central question is whether you prefer an open earbud, a sealed in-ear earbud, or an over-ear headphone. That fit decision matters more than simply choosing the model with the highest specification count.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are AirPods 4 still the newest AirPods?
No. AirPods 4 were introduced in 2024, but AirPods Pro 3 joined Apple’s lineup in 2025 and AirPods Max 2 joined it in 2026. AirPods 4 remain the current entry-level open-ear models.
Should I buy AirPods Pro 2 instead of AirPods Pro 3?
AirPods Pro 2 can be worth buying as previous-generation stock when the price is substantially lower than the $249 AirPods Pro 3 price. Check the generation, USB-C case, warranty, seller, condition, and return policy before purchasing.

Can I use AirPods with an Android phone?
AirPods can work with Android as Bluetooth headphones, but Apple-specific features may be limited. Verify compatibility for features such as automatic switching, Siri, Find My enhancements, Personalized Spatial Audio, hearing functions, and Live Translation before buying.
Do AirPods 4 with ANC block noise as well as AirPods Pro 3?
AirPods 4 with ANC should not be expected to provide the same physical isolation as AirPods Pro 3 because AirPods 4 use an open-ear design and AirPods Pro 3 use silicone tips that seal the ear canal. AirPods 4 with ANC are better for people who want moderate noise control without in-ear tips.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy AirPods 4 for the lowest price, AirPods 4 with ANC for open-fit convenience plus noise control, AirPods Pro 3 for the strongest current earbud feature set and sealed isolation, and AirPods Max 2 only if you specifically want premium over-ear headphones.
