Android AICore, the system service that runs on-device AI models such as Gemini Nano, can temporarily make a Pixel appear to have much less free storage. During a model update, Android keeps the old and new model versions on the phone for up to three days. Once the update is confirmed stable, the older copy and its extra space are removed automatically.
Why AICore is using extra storage
AICore supplies the models used by generative-AI functions that run directly on a phone’s hardware rather than sending every task to a server. Google says this design supports privacy, offline operation and faster, more consistent performance. Depending on the device and manufacturer, AICore-powered functions can include advanced proofreading, automatic speech recognition, scam detection, smart replies, summarization and translation.
Google’s explanation for the sudden storage increase is a background model update. To keep those features working reliably, the phone temporarily retains both the existing model and the replacement. Google says the overlap can last up to three days; after the system confirms the new model is stable, the additional storage clears automatically.
How much storage can disappear?
Google does not publish one universal AICore storage requirement for every Pixel model or every update. Android Central reported on 4 May 2026 that some users saw AICore occupy as much as 11 GB. That figure comes from user reports, not a guaranteed capacity or a Google specification, so another phone may show a substantially smaller or larger temporary increase.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
The important distinction is that this is update overhead, not a permanent 11 GB requirement. The amount depends on the model being delivered, the version already installed and the device’s software configuration.
What to do when AICore is the largest category
- Open Settings > Storage and check whether AICore is responsible for the increase.
- If AICore is the category that grew, leave the phone connected to power and allow the background update to finish. Google says the duplicate model is cleared automatically after stability is confirmed.
- Do not delete personal files expecting that to force the rollback or accelerate AICore’s cleanup. Those are separate storage actions; Google describes the model removal as an automatic system process.
- Check Storage again after the update window. If the extra space remains beyond the stated period, restart the phone and look for pending system updates. Persistent or rapidly increasing usage should be reported through Pixel support with the device model and Android build.
Freeing space that AICore will not reclaim
Storage pressure can have several unrelated causes. Use the category breakdown in Settings > Storage before deleting anything, then choose the remedy that matches the category.
Rank #2

- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]

| Storage source | Does the action address AICore’s temporary duplicate model? | What changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| AICore model update | Yes, but only by waiting for the system update to stabilize | The older model copy is removed automatically, potentially within three days | Requires waiting; no personal files are deleted |
| Photos and videos stored on the phone | No | Deleting local copies after backup releases device space | Files must be backed up and may no longer be available offline |
| Unused apps | No | Uninstalling removes the app and its local data | Reinstallation or data recovery may be needed later |
| App cache or app storage | No | Cache clearing removes temporary files; clearing storage can reset an app | Cached content may return, and clearing storage can erase local settings or downloads |
| Downloads and other files | No | Deleting or copying files elsewhere increases local free space | Deleted files may be difficult to recover |
| Cloud-account quota | No | Buying additional cloud capacity increases the account allowance, not Pixel’s internal storage | It adds an ongoing cost and does not remove AICore’s local model files |
Use Smart Storage and review large files
Pixel’s Storage settings include Smart Storage, which can remove backed-up photos and videos when the device needs room. You can also inspect large files, delete completed downloads and uninstall apps you no longer use. Copy files to a computer first when you need an offline archive.

Google Photos backup can help when media, rather than AICore, is consuming space. Google says each Google Account includes up to 15 GB shared across its services, with the option to buy more. Current Storage saver and Original-quality uploads generally count toward that quota, subject to historical Pixel exceptions described in Google’s Photos help documentation. After confirming that items are backed up, use the option to remove backed-up copies from the phone. This affects local media storage; it does not shorten AICore’s model-update process.
Is the missing storage permanent?
Not when the increase is the result of AICore updating normally. Google’s stated behavior is temporary retention of both model versions for up to three days, followed by automatic cleanup once the replacement is stable. AICore may still occupy some baseline space afterward because the active model remains installed, but the temporary duplicate should not be treated as a permanent requirement.

If Settings shows that photos, videos, apps, downloads or another category is responsible, AICore is not the cause of that usage. Likewise, an AICore figure that stays unusually high well beyond the update period is different from the short-lived spike Google describes. Record the category size, Pixel model and Android version before contacting support; that information helps distinguish an in-progress update from a storage-reporting problem.
