Google Meet’s Dynamic layouts make large calls easier to scan on Android by using AI-assisted portrait tiles to crop excess background and give faces more of the available grid. You can now pin up to six tiles instead of three. In meetings using Google Meet-certified room hardware, dynamic tiles can also separate up to three people from one room camera feed so you can pin an individual speaker rather than the entire room.
What Dynamic layouts change
Traditional Meet grids allocate a fairly regular rectangle to each video. When people sit far from the camera or leave a lot of wall and ceiling in view, much of that rectangle is unused. Dynamic layouts analyze each video and crop toward the person, then arrange the portrait-shaped tiles to fit more faces in the same screen area. Google describes the goal as to “prioritize faces by cropping out excess background video.”
The result is visual, not a capacity increase: Dynamic layouts do not raise the maximum number of participants in a meeting. They make the existing participant set denser and easier to scan, which is especially useful for all-hands calls, classes and large team meetings where the speaker can otherwise disappear among empty tile space.

Six pinned tiles instead of three
Pinning keeps selected people visible while other tiles change around them. The update raises the limit to up to six pinned tiles, compared with three previously. That lets you keep a presenter, moderator, interpreter and several panelists on screen without repeatedly searching the grid.

Separate people in a shared conference-room feed
Dynamic tiles are a separate capability for Google Meet-certified conference-room hardware. Google says an individual video tile is created for up to three meeting participants joining from the same room. Instead of one tile representing the whole room camera, Meet can identify those participants as separate tiles, allowing you to pin one person or follow that person’s video when they speak.
This room behavior requires the certified hardware setup; an ordinary Android phone or tablet does not turn a single camera feed into independently selectable people.

When the Android rollout arrived
Rapid-release Google Workspace domains began receiving Dynamic layouts on March 31, 2025. Google’s staged rollout allowed up to 15 days for the feature to appear. Scheduled-release domains were due to start on April 17, 2025, with propagation taking up to three weeks. The report covering the launch said the upgrade was available to both paid Workspace accounts and personal accounts.

How to get more people on screen in an Android meeting
- Update Meet. Install the latest version available for your Android device, then reopen the app. Google recommends keeping Meet updated for the current calling experience.
- Join or start the meeting. Dynamic layouts are applied by Meet when available; you do not need a new phone or tablet model.
- Open layout controls. Tap the meeting screen to reveal controls, open the More options menu, and look for Change layout or a similarly named layout control. Labels can differ as Google updates the Android interface.
- Choose the dynamic layout when offered. If Dynamic layouts is listed, select it. Meet will recrop and rearrange video tiles to emphasize faces.
- Pin important participants. Tap a participant’s tile and choose the pin control. Repeat for additional people until you reach the six-tile limit. In a room-hardware meeting, pin the individual dynamic tile rather than the room tile when separate tiles are available.
If Dynamic layouts is not listed, the account may not have received the rollout, the app may be out of date, or the meeting may not support a particular layout. Updating the app and checking again after Google’s propagation window are the practical first steps.
What changed elsewhere in Meet on Android
Reactions and hand raise moved
A February 20, 2025 Google Workspace design update changed the location of two mobile controls without changing what they do. Emoji reactions moved from the three-dot overflow menu to the bottom bar. Hand raise moved from the bottom bar into the overflow menu. If a control seems to have disappeared, check those two locations before assuming the feature is unavailable.

Tablet companion mode
In June 2025, Google added companion-mode joining from Android and iOS tablets, with rapid-release rollout beginning June 12. Companion mode is intended for large in-person meetings such as all-hands sessions and town halls: a tablet can join for meeting functions while the room’s main system handles the principal audio and video. This is related to large-room usability, but it is distinct from Dynamic layouts and does not create extra meeting capacity.

Google’s August 14, 2024 announcement also documented Android and iOS screen sharing, emoji reactions for large group calls, an on-the-go audio-only mode and call transfer between an Android phone and tablet. Calls can fall back to the legacy calling experience when another participant has not updated their Meet software, so participants may not all see identical controls.

Accessibility and cropping considerations
Cropping toward faces can remove useful context around a speaker. Google specifically encourages sign-language interpreters to consider whether Dynamic layouts might crop arms or hands unintentionally. For interpretation, demonstrations, physical whiteboards or presentations that depend on the wider frame, switch to a layout that preserves more of the original video or ask participants to adjust camera framing.

Why your tiles may look different
- Staged availability: your Workspace release track may still be within Google’s rollout window.
- App version: an older Android Meet build can lack newer layout and calling controls.
- Meeting context: room-hardware features appear only when the meeting uses supported certified equipment.
- Participant software: an attendee on an older build can trigger the legacy calling experience, producing different controls or behavior.
- Content being shown: screen sharing and layouts that preserve presentation detail may leave less room for portrait tiles.
Does it require a new Android phone or tablet?
No specific new Android model is identified as necessary. Phones and tablets are supported Meet clients, and the layout is delivered as a software feature. Keep the Meet app current and allow for account-level rollout. Only the separate ability to split people from one room feed depends on Google Meet-certified conference-room hardware.
