elementary OS 8.1 can replace Windows 11 if your essential apps and devices work with Linux and you are ready to learn a different desktop. Use Thanksgiving as a low-pressure chance to inventory your needs, back up your files, check your PC, and try elementary OS before replacing Windows. You can explore Linux in a virtual machine or from a live USB; you do not have to erase Windows to get started.
Is elementary OS 8.1 a good replacement for Windows 11?
It may be a good fit if your work can move to Linux apps or browser-based services, your hardware is compatible, and you are comfortable adapting to a different desktop. It is a poor fit if you depend on Windows-only software or peripherals that you cannot replace or work around.
Start with a list of what you actually use—not just the apps you open every day, but also games, printers, accessibility tools, work logins, and any specialized hardware. Check current support with each software or device vendor. Do not assume that an app works just because a similarly named Linux alternative exists.
Microsoft notes that a bare-metal Linux user may need alternatives to Windows tools such as Outlook, Teams, Word, and PowerPoint. That is not an app-by-app compatibility ruling: verify the exact services, features, and workflows you rely on with their vendors.

What changes in elementary OS 8.1?
elementary OS 8.1 makes its Wayland-powered Secure Session the default; the project says, “The Secure Session is now the default session in OS 8.1.” It retains Classic Session as a fallback. The project also reports improved support for devices including HiDPI and multi-touch devices, and says third-party developers and Nvidia have addressed some Wayland-session issues. These are release-level improvements, not guarantees that every PC, graphics card, or peripheral will work.
OS 8’s release announcement also describes work on screen-reader support and keyboard navigation during installation, initial setup, and onboarding. Treat these as features of the release, not proof of accessibility parity with Windows or compatibility with every assistive technology.

Choose a low-risk way to try Linux
The right first step depends on how much you need Windows and how much installation risk you are willing to take. Microsoft’s guide describes these approaches:

The table describes broad trade-offs, not a guarantee that every method is available or trouble-free on your computer. If you want to test device compatibility before installing, boot the elementary OS USB and try the system without choosing an option that installs to or erases a disk.

Check the PC before you make installation media
The elementary/os build repository lists these minimum specifications for elementary OS: UEFI with Secure Boot disabled, 8 GB of USB flash drive capacity, a 55 GB destination disk, and 4 GB of system memory. The installation guide’s user-facing instructions describe a USB drive of at least 4 GB; choose an 8 GB-or-larger drive to meet the repository’s stricter specification.
These minimums do not establish that a particular PC’s Wi-Fi, graphics, sleep, touchpad, printer, or other hardware will work. Check your computer model and the components you rely on, then test them from the live USB where possible. Minimum specifications are not a promise of good performance or device compatibility.

For comparison, Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum requirements include a supported processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI and Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, compatible graphics, and display requirements. The two operating systems’ requirement lists answer different questions; neither proves that your specific PC will run the system well.

Use Thanksgiving to prepare, not rush
- Inventory your workflow. Write down essential apps, games, peripherals, accessibility tools, and work requirements. Verify Linux support with the relevant vendors and identify any task that must remain in Windows.
- Back up important files. Make a separate backup before installing or changing partitions. Confirm that you can open the backup and know which disk contains your files.
- Save your BitLocker recovery key. If Windows is encrypted and you plan to dual-boot or live-boot Linux, Microsoft advises retrieving and storing the recovery key before you begin.
- Check the PC. Confirm the machine meets elementary OS’s stated minimums, find its boot-menu instructions, and research support for the exact hardware and peripherals you need.
- Try Linux before committing. Use WSL, a virtual machine, or a live USB according to what you want to evaluate. Test your normal workflow and the devices that matter most.
- Decide whether to keep Windows. If you still need Windows-only tools, consider keeping a Windows installation through a dual-boot arrangement or continuing with Windows while you evaluate Linux. Do not proceed with an erase or partitioning option until your backup is verified and you have identified the correct disk.
Create and boot an elementary OS USB
The elementary installation guide’s Windows workflow is to verify the downloaded ISO using its published SHA-256 checksum, write it to USB with Etcher, and restart the PC to boot from that drive.

- Download the elementary OS image and compare its SHA-256 checksum with the checksum published by elementary.
- Connect an 8 GB-or-larger USB flash drive. Writing the image will overwrite the drive, so copy any files you want to keep elsewhere.
- Use Etcher to write the ISO to the USB drive.
- Restart and open your PC’s one-time boot menu. F12 is common; some computers use Esc or another key. Check the startup display or the computer’s documentation for the correct key.
- Select the USB drive to start elementary OS. To test the system, avoid installer choices that erase a disk or make permanent changes until you are ready and have verified your backup.
When a full switch makes sense
Consider replacing Windows only after you have tested the applications and hardware central to your routine and decided what to do about any Windows-only requirement. If one essential work tool, accessibility feature, game, or device remains unverified, keep Windows available while you investigate rather than treating a successful boot as proof that the whole PC is ready for migration.
If you would rather buy a system with Linux already installed than adapt an existing Windows PC, the elementary OS 8.1 announcement names Laptop with Linux, Star Labs, and Slimbook as retailers offering preinstalled systems. Check their current models, availability, and shipping options for your location before deciding.
