A thin-film head is the magnetic transducer in a hard disk drive (HDD): it reads data from or writes data to a rotating disk. “Thin-film” describes how the head’s magnetic parts and conductors are fabricated—not the disk itself.
What a thin-film head does
The head converts between magnetic signals and electrical signals. During a write, it uses an electrical signal to create a magnetic pattern on the disk. During a read, it senses the recorded pattern and produces a signal the drive can interpret as data.
The head is part of a moving read/write assembly. As the disk spins, the assembly positions the head over the desired data area, where the head flies just above the disk surface. The head and recording medium are separate components: a thin-film head is not a thin-film disk. IBM’s HDD white paper describes the head assembly and thin-film disk layers separately.

Why it is called a thin-film head
The name refers to the head’s construction. Its magnetic elements and conductors are formed as patterned layers using thin-film manufacturing techniques. In a 2012 historical account, IBM Research explains that electroplating through a mask was used to pattern magnetic elements and copper conductors; commercial production also depended on integrating that process with other manufacturing inventions. IBM Research’s account describes this development.

An earlier paper on batch-fabricated single-turn heads describes using evaporation, plating, and photolithography. It also reports dynamic read/write testing on a moving disk. The process paper provides that manufacturing context.
How thin-film heads changed over time
Early thin-film heads were inductive: the same general type of magnetic transducer handled reading and writing. Later designs combined magnetoresistive reading with inductive writing. IBM’s historical account identifies two milestones: its electroplated, batch-fabricated heads were introduced commercially in 1979, and integrated magnetoresistive-read/inductive-write heads followed in 1989. These are historical dates reported by IBM, not descriptions of every modern HDD. IBM’s retrospective recounts those shifts.

A separate IBM review traces development of thin-film inductive heads from 1964 to their first introduction in 1979. The review focuses on that historical development.
Instability in engineering research
Engineering studies have examined instability in thin-film heads as a potential source of signal problems. A 1994 IBM paper discusses write instability that can produce noise after writing, and read instability that can distort read pulses. These are technical phenomena described in that study—not a consumer fault checklist or a diagnosis for a particular drive. The paper does not establish current failure rates or repair procedures. The IBM study describes the two modes.
