IoT sensors do not directly read emotions. They measure signals such as heart rate, skin conductance, movement, speech, or environmental conditions; software then estimates whether those patterns might indicate stress or another affective state. A device may use that estimate to tailor a prompt or other feedback, but sensing a possible mood is not the same as changing it.

What emotion-tracking sensors actually measure

A wearable records observable body signals, not a feeling. Wearable affect-recognition research commonly examines physiological and movement data, which algorithms use as inputs to pattern-recognition models. A 2019 review describes the field and its methods, not a consumer product test: Wearable-Based Affect Recognition—A Review.

Other systems draw on everyday traces from phones, computers, and wearables. Researchers call this personal sensing: using streams of device data to investigate markers related to behavior, thoughts, feelings, or traits. The path from raw data to a psychological interpretation involves multiple layers of modeling, rather than a direct measurement of someone’s inner state. See the 2017 reviews in Annual Review of Clinical Psychology and PubMed.

More signals mean more inputs, not certainty

Multimodal systems may combine signals such as facial expression, speech, EEG, ECG, and galvanic skin response (GSR, a measure related to skin conductance). A May 2026 review of IoT-enabled emotion recognition describes these approaches across wearables, ambient sensors, and mobile devices. Combining channels gives a model more information to interpret; it does not turn emotion into something a sensor directly observes. The review also identifies challenges including heterogeneous data, privacy, interpretability, and limited labeled datasets: AIoT for human emotion recognition: Potentials, challenges, and healthcare applications.

Can a smartwatch tell how you feel?

Not reliably as a universal capability established by the evidence cited here. A watch may record physiological signals that a model treats as possible indicators of arousal or stress, but the same response can have different causes. A faster heart rate, for example, is a signal to interpret—not proof of anxiety, excitement, or any other specific emotion.

Whether a model’s output is meaningful depends on factors such as the population studied, sensor, setting, model, and how researchers determine what participants felt. Self-reports can provide useful context, but they are an imperfect ground truth. Reviews of wearable affect recognition and personal sensing discuss these validation and interpretation challenges; neither supplies a broadly applicable accuracy figure for consumer watches.

What daily-life sensor studies can—and cannot—show

A 2018 real-world study combined on-body physiological readings, environmental sensor data, and participants’ self-reported emotions. It reported associations between noise exposure and heart rate, and between UV/environmental noise and electrodermal activity. Those associations do not show that noise or UV caused a particular emotional change, nor do they establish that a device can identify an individual’s feelings in everyday use. The study’s account of its sensor-fusion approach describes an effort to model connections among environmental, body, and emotion data.

Can an app or sensor change your mood?

Monitoring and intervention are separate steps. A system could use an inferred state to change a prompt, feedback, or other experience, but that alone does not show the change improves mood or health. Evidence needs to support the specific intervention and outcome—not just the device’s ability to collect data or generate an estimate.

In a January 2018 article, the American Psychological Association discussed apps claiming to monitor stress or well-being and noted that evidence for many health claims was lacking. Jiten Chhabra, MD, a Georgia Tech human-computer interaction researcher, said: “Go to the health and wellness category in a mobile store, you’ll see thousands of apps, but the majority provide no evidence of the health claims they present.” That is a dated observation from the 2018 article, not a current survey of app offerings. What happens to emotion-sensing data?

Physiological and behavioral streams can expose personal information, and an inferred label can be sensitive even when it is uncertain. When evaluating a device or service, look for clear answers to these questions:

A 2022 study examined perceived risks and benefits of open dataset collection for mobile affective computing with 100 participants over four weeks. Its abstract reported that most participants in that study were less concerned about open dataset collection and that perceived sensitivity did not change over time. Those findings describe that sample and study context, not public opinion in general. The study is published in Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies.

A 2024 paper tested a framework combining multitask learning, differential privacy, and federated learning on two public datasets. In those experiments, it reported 90% emotion-recognition accuracy and 47% reidentification accuracy. These are results for that framework and those datasets, not a guarantee of accuracy or privacy for other systems. The JMIR Mental Health study reports the evaluation.

How to judge an emotion-sensing claim

  • Identify the output. Is the product reporting a measured signal, a broad stress or arousal estimate, or a specific named emotion?
  • Check the validation setting. Results from a controlled study may not transfer to daily life, other populations, or different devices.
  • Look for evidence tied to the claim. A feature that detects a pattern does not by itself prove that it can accurately identify feelings, diagnose a condition, or improve health.
  • Inspect data practices. Understand what is collected, retained, shared, and available for deletion or opt-out.

Across the field, wearable, mobile, and ambient approaches represent different ways to collect inputs; none is established here as the winner for all uses. The central distinction remains: sensors capture observables, and models infer what those observables might mean.
