The best leaf mulcher depends on whether you want to feed gathered leaves into a dedicated machine or blow, vacuum, and shred them with one handheld tool. Bob Vila’s September 2026 comparison named the corded WORX WG430 its best overall stand-alone mulcher; the WORX WG512 Trivac is a better fit if you want a blower, vacuum, and mulcher in one tool. Neither is a universal choice: yard size, wet leaves, cord access, bagging, and seasonal storage all matter.

WORX WG430 Shredding piles gathered for a dedicated machine 13-amp corded motor; 11:1 reduction ratio; named best overall stand-alone pick in Bob Vila’s 2026 comparison You have to collect and lift leaves into the hopper, and store a seasonal single-purpose tool.
WORX WG512 Trivac Blowing, vacuuming, and mulching with one handheld tool 12-amp corded motor; metal impeller; 600 CFM airflow; 16:1 reduction ratio; named value pick in Bob Vila’s 2026 comparison The cord limits reach, and the vacuum-and-bag workflow still requires managing collected leaves.
WORX WG509 A handheld design with a higher stated reduction ratio 12-amp corded motor; 350 CFM airflow; 18:1 reduction ratio in Bob Vila’s 2026 comparison The comparison reports occasional clogging on wet piles and a relatively small collection bag.

Bob Vila says its team researched more than 25 models and tested 15 over five days or more, including work with dry and wet leaves and other yard debris. Its findings are reviewer evaluations, not a guarantee that a model will perform the same way in every yard. Read the full comparison.

Choose a mulcher for the way you clear leaves

Choose the WG430 for gathered piles and fast processing

A stand-alone hopper mulcher does one job: it shreds leaves that you bring to it. The WG430’s 13-amp corded motor and 11:1 reduction ratio make it the clearest match in this comparison for someone who can rake or gather leaves, carry them to the machine, and feed them through its hopper. It is a seasonal tool, so consider where it will live between cleanups as well as where you will use it.

In Bob Vila’s 2023 review, the WG430 was described as processing 53 gallons of leaves per minute. That figure is from that older review and is not an independently verified current manufacturer rating. The reviewer also described assembly and storage as easy, but that is one tester’s experience. See the 2023 review.

#1 Best Overall
WORX 13 Amp Electric Leaf Mulcher for Yard Leaf & Waste Shredding, WG430
  • HIGH-CAPACITY LEAF MULCHING: 13 Amp electric leaf mulcher processes up to 53 gallons of leaves per minute, helping reduce large piles of dry leaves and yard debris.
  • 11:1 MULCH RATIO: Reduces up to 11 bags of leaves into 1, making disposal, curbside pickup, and composting more manageable.
  • BAG-COMPATIBLE COLLECTION: Mulched leaves discharge into a bag mounted underneath, helping simplify collection and cleanup.
  • LINE-BASED MULCHING SYSTEM: Uses a bladeless flex-a-line cutting system to shred leaves while simplifying maintenance versus metal blade designs.
  • EASY ASSEMBLY AND STRORAGE: Tool-free assembly and disassembly make it easier to set up for fall cleanup and store when the season is done.

Choose the WG512 if you want to move and collect leaves with one tool

The WG512 Trivac combines blowing, vacuuming, and mulching. That can suit a smaller or more segmented cleanup where moving leaves into piles and then collecting them is more convenient than carrying piles to a stand-alone machine. Bob Vila lists a 12-amp corded motor, metal impeller, 600 CFM airflow, and 16:1 reduction ratio. You still need to manage cord reach and the collection-bag routine.

Consider the WG509 only if its trade-offs suit your yard

The WG509 has the highest stated reduction ratio among these three models, at 18:1, but that number alone does not make it the best choice. Bob Vila reports 350 CFM airflow, occasional clogging on wet piles, and a relatively small bag. It may be worth comparing if a handheld tool and high stated reduction ratio are priorities, but frequent wet-leaf cleanup makes the reported clogging a meaningful drawback.

EWORK 15 Amp Leaf Mulcher/Shredder, 16:1 Ratio, Durable Cutting Lines
  • 【15 Amp High-Speed Motor】 Equipped with a 15 Amp motor running at 8000 RPM, it delivers steady power when tackling thick autumn leaf piles, oak yard waste and dry pine needles. Unlike ordinary mulchers that overheat or stall after long hours of weekly fall cleanup, it maintains consistent output for frequent composting tasks, cutting your waiting time for yard work
  • 【Versatile Mulching】 3 customizable shred textures paired with a 16:1 compression ratio breaks leaf waste into tiny pieces to slash bag usage. Coarse fragments fit landscape ground cover, medium texture speeds up compost maturation, ultra-fine mulch boosts soil absorption. It helps you cut down waste disposal fees and skip buying commercial garden mulch year after year
  • 【Wear-Resistant Cutting Line】 Upgraded wear-resistant trim line largely avoids the common frustration of quick wear and frequent breakage seen on most mulchers during year-round yard waste shredding. Matching replacement line accessories are available in our store, so you won’t struggle to hunt for non-standard, hard-to-find spare parts after long-term compost use
  • 【Versatile Adjustable Rake】 4.1ft long leaf rake with adjustable width (7.5–24 inches) easily gathers scattered leaves across backyards, flower beds and vegetable plots. Instead of bending over repeatedly with small hand rakes during daily fall leaf care, you collect more waste in one sweep and cut manual labor drastically for seasonal yard maintenance
  • 【Anti-Clogging & Low-Dust Design】 20-inch wide feeding inlet and 15-inch outlet reduce clogging risks from wet leaves and small twigs, while greatly cutting down dust splashing during mulching. You won’t need to pause frequently to clear blockages, and far less dust will drift around when handling mixed damp yard waste for backyard composting

What reduction ratio does—and does not—tell you

A reduction ratio describes how much the machine reduces the volume of material. It is not a measure of how quickly it works, how well it handles wet or matted leaves, or the quality of the finished mulch. The ratios in Bob Vila’s comparison are 11:1 for the WG430, 16:1 for the WG512, and 18:1 for the WG509; the comparison separately reports that coarse, wet, or matted material can slow or clog some models.

Choose by workflow and conditions first, then use the ratio as one comparison point. If your leaves are often wet, performance reports on damp material and the effort of clearing a clog matter more than a higher ratio on paper.

Check cord access, setup, and safety before buying

All three models discussed here are corded. Before choosing one, check whether an outlet and cord route can reach the areas where you work without creating a trip hazard or getting in the way. The cited reviews do not establish current manufacturer requirements for extension cords, replacement line, or other accessories, so check the model’s current manual and local electrical requirements rather than assuming a particular setup is approved.

Bob Vila’s 2023 WG430 review describes substantial dust during that reviewer’s use, along with eye protection, ear plugs, a dust mask, and gloves. Those are the reviewer’s setup details, not a universal safety specification; follow the current manual for protective equipment and operation. Keep larger branches out of a leaf mulcher: Bob Vila’s comparison says they are not leaf-mulcher work and notes that the Sun Joe CJ601E chipper, with its narrow hopper and flywheel, is better suited to sticks than leaves.

When a leaf mulcher is the wrong kind of tool

  • You need cordless portability: The evidence here does not establish a specific cordless model recommendation for 2026. Check current, model-specific documentation before choosing a battery-powered option.
  • You mostly need to chip sticks: A leaf mulcher is for leaves, not larger branches. Look for a chipper suited to that material instead.
  • You only need to move leaves: If you do not need to collect and shred them, a dedicated mulcher or vacuum-mulcher may add a step or capability you will not use. Decide whether the blowing, collecting, or shredding function is the part of cleanup you actually need.

How to make the final choice

  1. Start with the cleanup sequence. Pick the WG430 if you plan to gather leaves and feed them into a hopper. Pick the WG512 if you want to blow leaves together and then vacuum and mulch them with one handheld tool.
  2. Account for damp leaves. If wet or matted piles are common, treat the WG509’s reported occasional wet-pile clogging and the comparison’s broader reports of slowing or clogging as relevant cautions.
  3. Measure practical cord reach. Consider outlet locations and the route the cord must take through your yard; all three models listed here are corded.
  4. Think through collection and storage. A stand-alone mulcher means hopper feeding and storing a dedicated seasonal tool. For handheld models, consider the bagging workflow and, for the WG509, its relatively small bag as reported in the comparison.
  5. Verify current details. Check the current product page and manual for exact specifications, safety instructions, compatibility, warranty, and availability. Those details are not established by the cited reviews.
