I still use a fourth-generation Kindle, a Sonos Play:1, a Panasonic SC-PMX9DB mini hi-fi, a late-2014 27-inch iMac 5K, and a Logitech Harmony Hub every day. They have not all stayed useful in the same way: some still do their original job, while others rely on replacement hardware, third-party software, or automation. These are examples from my setup, not proof that older electronics generally last this long.
How these older gadgets still fit into my daily routine
The common thread is not that the devices have avoided age-related problems. It is that, in my setup, each still has a core function worth keeping—and I have been willing to work around changes in software, services, or controls. The details below are my experience, not controlled product tests or a recommendation that every aging device can be made to work the same way.
Can you still use an old Kindle?
Fourth-generation Kindle
I still use my fourth-generation Kindle for reading, but not through the full set of Amazon services I once relied on. I installed KOReader, along with plugins, to handle more file formats and functions on the device.
The article describing this setup reports that Amazon dropped support in May 2026 for Kindle models released in 2012 or earlier. It says affected users could no longer access the Kindle Store, download books from their Kindle library, sign back in after a factory reset, or use Send to Kindle. I have not independently confirmed those service changes against an Amazon notice, so treat them as reported rather than independently verified. The practical point for my Kindle is that KOReader provides a way to keep reading files on the device, but it does not restore the Amazon services described above.

Which older audio devices do I still use?
Sonos Play:1
My Sonos Play:1 remains in use through Music Assistant, which lets me avoid relying on the Sonos app for my listening routine. The article describes the speaker as having a 3.5-inch mid-woofer, a separate tweeter, Class-D amplifiers, and Trueplay room correction; those specifications were not separately checked against Sonos documentation.
That integration is specific to my setup. It shows one way I continue using the speaker, not a guarantee that Music Assistant will work with every Play:1 configuration or that it will suit someone who wants to use Sonos’s own app and services.

Panasonic SC-PMX9DB mini hi-fi system
I use my Panasonic SC-PMX9DB, a system released in 2013 with two bookshelf speakers, to listen to music while I work. I prefer its stereo setup to smart speakers for that use. That is a personal listening preference, not the result of a controlled sound-quality comparison.

How does an older iMac remain usable?
Late-2014 27-inch iMac 5K
My late-2014 27-inch iMac 5K is still my main writing and editing computer, even though its internal Fusion drive failed. I run it from an external SSD instead.

I also use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to install macOS versions newer than Big Sur, which the article describes as the last version officially supported by this iMac. Some of my applications no longer support Big Sur, which is part of why I chose this workaround. Patching does not erase the computer’s age-related hardware limits or guarantee security updates and application compatibility; my setup is a personal workaround, not a general recommendation to install an unofficial operating system.
Can an old universal remote still control home theater gear?
Logitech Harmony Hub
My Logitech Harmony Hub still controls some of my AV equipment as part of a Home Assistant setup, including devices controlled over infrared or Bluetooth. I also use a replacement Wi-Fi remote and automation after the original companion remote’s buttons wore out.

Updates had made the Harmony app effectively unusable for me, so the hub’s continued usefulness depends on the rest of my setup rather than a smooth experience with that app. This account does not establish current compatibility or availability. A Harmony Hub may behave differently with other equipment, and the specific AV devices and control methods matter.

In my experience, age alone has not determined whether a gadget remains useful. The condition of the hardware matters, but so do vendor services, app support, compatible third-party software, and the effort required to maintain a workaround.

- Some core functions survive service changes: KOReader keeps my Kindle useful for reading files, though it does not bring back the reported Amazon features.
- Integration can change how a device is used: Music Assistant and Home Assistant are part of how I continue to use the Sonos speaker and Harmony Hub.
- A workaround can add upkeep: My iMac depends on an external SSD and unofficial patching, while my Harmony setup includes a replacement remote and automation.
- Personal preference is not a benchmark: I use the Panasonic system because I prefer its stereo listening experience for work; that does not establish that it sounds better than smart speakers for everyone.
These examples are useful as a reminder to assess a particular device and the services and equipment around it. They do not establish a general lifespan for consumer electronics, and a workaround that suits my needs may not suit yours.
