Yes—if the exact version fits your build. The Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 is one of the best-value dual-tower air coolers for mainstream Intel desktops. Independent testing has put it close to, and in one comparison slightly ahead of, the far more expensive Noctua NH-D15, while Tom’s Hardware found the Peerless Assassin 120 SE capable of handling more than 200 W with a Core i9-12900K in its test setup. Those results support an excellent value verdict, not a guarantee for every unrestricted Core i9, case, or motherboard.

Buy it when the price is near the budget-cooler range and your case, memory and socket are compatible. Choose a larger premium cooler or a 280/360 mm liquid cooler for sustained, unrestricted high-power workloads or aggressive overclocking.

What exactly is the Peerless Assassin 120?

“Peerless Assassin 120” describes a family rather than one unchanging product. Listings include the original model, 120 SE, SE V2, SE V3, Black, White, ARGB, Digital and the much smaller Peerless Assassin 120 Mini. Fans, dimensions, lighting, mounting hardware and socket lists can differ.

Intel socket compatibility

LGA1700

LGA1700 covers Intel 12th-, 13th- and 14th-generation desktop Core processors. A compatible current package should include the correct backplate, spacers and mounting bars, but verify the box contents rather than relying on the family name.

Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE V2 CPU Cooler, Dual Tower, 1850RPM
  • V2 Performance Upgrade: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE V2 is the upgraded version of the Peerless Assassin 120 SE, combining a dual-tower heatsink with a higher-airflow fan system to provide extra cooling headroom for gaming, content creation, and sustained desktop workloads
  • Product Specifications: The cooler measures 125(L) x 135(W) x 155(H) mm (4.92 x 5.31 x 6.1 inches); the front fan can be raised to clear taller RAM, which increases the overall cooler height, so check both RAM height and the maximum CPU cooler height listed for your case
  • Dual 28mm PWM Fans: The two TL-C12C-X28 V2 120mm fans are 28mm thick and run at speeds up to 1850RPM±10%, delivering up to 88.89CFM airflow and 2.21mm H2O static pressure with a rated maximum noise level of 29.5dBA; the 4-Pin PWM connection lets users adjust the fan curve through the motherboard BIOS or fan-control software, lowering fan speed and noise under light loads while allowing the fans to ramp up when more cooling is needed
  • AGHP Gen 5.0 Technology: Six 6mm heat pipes help maintain heat transfer whether the case is used vertically or horizontally, while the pure copper base and fully electroplated, reflow-soldered construction distribute heat across both aluminum fin stacks
  • Compatibility: The cooler supports Intel LGA1851/1700/1200/115X and AMD AM5/AM4; mounting plates, fasteners, TF7 thermal paste, and an installation manual are included, and AM4/AM5 installations reuse the motherboard’s original AMD backplate

LGA1851

Thermalright lists LGA1851 support for the referenced current model. That does not prove that an older retail box or every SE, ARGB, Digital or regional revision includes LGA1851 hardware. Confirm the exact revision before ordering.

Older sockets

LGA115x and LGA1200 support can help with upgrades, while LGA2011/2011-3/2066 support must be checked on the particular product page. Socket compatibility only establishes mounting; it does not guarantee adequate cooling for every processor power level.

Why the design works

Two fin towers, six heat pipes, a nickel-plated copper base on the listed model and push-pull airflow give the cooler considerably more heat-transfer area than inexpensive single-tower designs. Two 120-mm fans also make it somewhat easier to fit than many 140-mm dual-tower coolers.

Actual CPU temperature depends on heatsink contact, mounting pressure, thermal paste, fan control, case airflow, ambient temperature and the motherboard’s power behavior. An advertised TDP figure is not a universal Intel wattage limit.

Cooling performance on Intel CPUs

What independent tests show

GamersNexus measured the Peerless Assassin 120 at 53.4°C over ambient and 42.5 dBA in one load test, narrowly outperforming the Noctua NH-D15 in that comparison. The result is useful comparative evidence from that test bench, not a temperature promise for your PC: GamersNexus testing.

Tom’s Hardware tested the Peerless Assassin 120 SE with an Intel Core i9-12900K and reported cooling suitable for workloads above 200 W in its environment. That supports strong LGA1700 capability, but it is not a universal safe limit for every i9 or motherboard: Tom’s Hardware review.

PC Gamer’s January 23, 2026 review of the Peerless Assassin 120 SE V2 also rated it a particularly strong budget purchase on an Intel LGA1700 system: PC Gamer review.

Use-case verdicts

Intel workload Recommendation
Core i3/i5 gaming Excellent fit
Non-K Core i5/i7 Generally excellent with sensible case airflow
Core i5-13600K/14600K class Strong choice, especially with reasonable power limits
Unlocked i7/i9 at motherboard-unlimited power Usable, but workload, airflow and sustained temperature need checking
Long rendering or compilation jobs Check sustained temperature and throttling rather than peak temperature alone
Aggressive overclocking Prefer a larger premium air cooler or 280/360-mm AIO
LGA1851 desktop system Potentially suitable; verify the exact mounting kit

Noise

The dual-fan layout can deliver strong cooling without extreme speed, and independent testing found competitive noise-normalized performance. Your result depends on the motherboard fan curve, power limits, case acoustics and fan resonance. Thermalright’s 25.6-dBA figure applies to each fan under its own measurement conditions, not to a complete PC.

  • [Better cooling] Adopting black paint fully electroplated reflow soldering process, the top adopts blackened nano coating+fully electroplated heat pipe+fine micro carved copper bottom, greatly increasing the effective heat dissipation area. memory cut corner avoidance design and can achieve excellent heat dissipation performance during operation.
  • [Product specification] Model: PA120SE BLACK; CPU heat sink size: 125 (L) x135 (W) x155 (H) mm (4.92x5.31x6.1 inch); Heat sink material: Aluminum, CPU heat sink equipped with metal fasteners from Intel and AMD platforms for better installation, dual tower and dual fan heat dissipation is more powerful.
  • [Stable output] CPU cooler with high-performance inverted fan with PWM temperature control function, shock-absorbing silicone feet around to reduce fan noise, anti-touch fan blade design to improve safety, and S-FDB bearing is a solution to the fan lifting jitter vibration. The S-FDB bearing solves the problem of fan lifting vibration. It improves the cooling performance to a great extent.
  • [Dual PWM Fans] TL-C12C Reverse Fan*2; Standard size PWM fan: 120x120x25mm (4.72x4.72x0.98 inches); Fan speed (RPM): 1550rpm±10%; Power interface: 4pin; Voltage: 12V; Air volume: 66.17 CFM (MAX); The noise value is≤25.6dB (A), and dual fans can provide stronger air flow, further improving the heat dissipation effect of the cpu cooler.
  • [Detailed description] The radiator is equipped with a Y-type adapter cable (one end of 3-pin, one end of 4-pin), which can be very good to connect the two fans in series, to avoid the motherboard interface is not enough. (Note: Installation of AM4 motherboard, you need to use the motherboard original backplane installation)

Air cooling avoids pump noise and is mechanically simple. Fans can be replaced later, but PC Gamer did not run its sample long enough to make a lifespan claim, so no specific service life should be assumed.

Installing it on an Intel motherboard

  1. Confirm the exact socket and that the package contains its mounting hardware.
  2. Remove the stock Intel mounting hardware if the manual requires it.
  3. Orient the supplied backplate or mounting frame for the socket; LGA1700 is not the same position as LGA115x.
  4. Install the correct spacers, standoffs and Intel mounting bars.
  5. Remove the cooler’s protective film and apply thermal paste.
  6. Place the heatsink on the CPU and tighten the spring-loaded captive screws alternately.
  7. Clip on both fans, raising the front fan only as much as memory clearance requires.
  8. Connect the four-pin PWM leads to the CPU_FAN/appropriate motherboard headers.
  9. Check clearance to RAM, VRM heatsinks, the first PCIe slot and the side panel.

PC Gamer describes the SE installation as a rear bracket, spacers, screws, mounting bars and spring-loaded captive screws. Follow the manual supplied with your revision; Thermalright’s mounting documentation illustrates separate LGA115x and LGA1700 positions: Thermalright manual.

Common installation mistakes

  • Using the LGA115x position on an LGA1700 board.
  • Keeping the wrong stock backplate or omitting a spacer.
  • Forgetting protective film on the base.
  • Mounting the front fan low enough to block tall DIMMs.
  • Tightening one side fully before the other.
  • Connecting only one fan or using an inappropriate header.
  • Assuming an older package contains LGA1851 hardware.

Case and memory checklist

  • Compare your case’s maximum CPU-cooler height with 157 mm and allow extra room if the front fan must be raised.
  • Measure RAM height and check whether the front fan overlaps the first DIMM slot.
  • Check VRM heatsink height and distance to the first PCIe slot.
  • Confirm the side panel closes after fan adjustment.
  • Ensure front-to-back case airflow is adequate.

Intel power limits matter

Motherboards may apply permissive or unlimited power settings to unlocked processors. A chip that is easy to cool under Intel-default behavior can run much hotter during unrestricted all-core rendering or compilation.

Gaming often uses less sustained CPU power than a full all-core workload. A brief high peak is less concerning than sustained thermal throttling. Sensible power limits or a modest undervolt can reduce temperature and noise, although the benefit depends on the specific CPU and board.

Price and value

PC Gamer reported approximately $33 in the United States and £32 in the United Kingdom for a Peerless Assassin 120 SE V2 review unit on January 23, 2026. That is a dated price signal, not a guaranteed September 2026 price: price reference.

At roughly budget-air-cooler pricing, the Peerless Assassin is exceptional. If its price rises close to newer Thermalright designs or premium competitors, its value advantage narrows. Tom’s Hardware’s mid-$30 pricing was from September 2022 and is not current pricing: historical review.

Alternatives

Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE

This is the closest internal alternative. Both families appear in Thermalright’s dual-tower catalogue: Phantom Spirit and Peerless Assassin listings. Consider it when priced similarly or when testing shows an advantage, but compare the exact revision, fans, dimensions and mounting kit.

Arctic Freezer 36

The Freezer 36 can be a simpler or less imposing choice. PC Gamer’s comparison described the Peerless Assassin as larger but substantially more capable in cooling. Verify the purchased Freezer 36 revision’s Intel hardware: Arctic product page.

Noctua NH-D15

Noctua’s NH-D15 remains the premium-brand benchmark, with premium fans, established mounting support and a six-year warranty in the cited documentation. GamersNexus nevertheless found the Peerless Assassin narrowly ahead in one thermal/noise comparison. The NH-D15 is usually much more expensive and larger, so its advantages are refinement, support and warranty rather than budget value: Noctua product document.

240/280/360-mm AIO cooling

An AIO may provide more headroom for sustained high-power CPUs, but adds a pump, radiator and tubing, along with placement constraints, cost and another failure component. The Peerless Assassin should not be described as universally faster than liquid cooling; its case is simplicity and competitive air-cooling performance.

Who should buy it?

  • Buy it for mainstream Intel gaming or productivity systems when the exact SKU includes your socket hardware and the price is near the budget range.
  • Buy it for a sensible-power-limit Core i5 or i7 system where strong air cooling and low cost matter more than premium finish.
  • Choose something else for compact cases, less than approximately 157 mm of clearance, unusually tall memory, aggressive overclocking or sustained unrestricted i9 workloads.
  • Consider the Phantom Spirit 120 SE if it costs about the same and its exact revision offers better tested performance or compatibility.
  • Choose the NH-D15 when premium fans, long warranty and established support justify the additional cost.
