AI can help developers find bottlenecks and propose code changes that may improve performance, but a plausible patch is not proof of faster software. To establish a real improvement, teams still need to verify correctness, profile representative workloads, and repeat measurements under controlled conditions. Results so far range from promising early examples to 2026 benchmark findings that current language models struggle to deliver consistent gains on repository-level tasks.
What AI can contribute to performance engineering
Performance work involves more than rewriting a slow-looking function. A developer must locate the actual bottleneck, understand the relevant workload, make a change that preserves behavior, and measure whether that change helps. AI can assist with parts of this process: it can inspect code, suggest optimization ideas, and generate candidate patches for a developer or an automated workflow to evaluate.
Microsoft Research’s DeepPERF work is an early example. In a 2022 evaluation spanning 50 open-source C# repositories, the authors reported valid suggestions that could improve CPU usage and memory allocations. In an expert-verified dataset, DeepPERF generated the same performance-improvement suggestion as a developer fix in approximately 53% of cases and produced suggestions verbatim in approximately 34%. The authors also reported 19 submitted pull requests containing 28 performance optimizations; 11 had been approved by project owners at the time their publication page was written.
Those results show that generated suggestions can be useful, not that an AI system can reliably optimize arbitrary software. As the DeepPERF authors put it, “Improving software performance is an important yet challenging part of the software development cycle.”

Why a patch is not the same as a performance gain
A change can be functionally correct and still be neutral or slower. It can also improve one metric while making another worse: reducing runtime may increase memory use, for example. Even a genuine improvement on one input may disappear or reverse on another input size, distribution, compiler, or execution environment.
For an AI-suggested optimization, separate three questions:

- Does it work? The patch must apply and preserve the required behavior.
- Does it improve the target? Measure runtime and memory rather than relying on the code’s appearance or the model’s explanation.
- Does the improvement hold up? Repeat measurements and test representative inputs and execution conditions to distinguish a durable change from noise or a narrow win.
Keep conventional compiler optimizations and expert-written changes visible as baselines when the evaluation provides them. Otherwise, it can be unclear whether a model added value beyond existing tools or a straightforward human solution.

| Study | What it evaluated | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| DeepPERF, Microsoft Research (2022) | Performance-improvement suggestions for C#; the publication page reports evaluation across 50 open-source repositories. | Approximately 53% of suggestions matched a developer fix in an expert-verified dataset; approximately 34% were verbatim. The authors reported 19 submitted pull requests with 28 optimizations, 11 approved at the time of the page. | An early example of useful suggestions and project uptake, not a universal success rate for AI optimization. |
| SWE-Pro, preprint (2026) | 102 expert-written optimizations drawn from open-source projects; the benchmark evaluates repository-level tasks and includes runtime, peak memory, and time-weighted memory usage under parameterized conditions. | Expert implementations achieved 15.48× aggregate runtime speedup and 171.31× peak-memory reduction. Runtime improved in 91.2% of tasks, and reliable peak-memory gains were reported in 65.7%. | These are expert benchmark results, not expected gains for arbitrary production code. The SWE-Pro authors reported negligible runtime gains and almost no memory optimization from current LLMs on their repository-level benchmark. |
| “How Do Agents Perform Code Optimization? An Empirical Study” (2026) | 324 agent-generated and 83 human-authored performance pull requests. | Explicit performance validation appeared in 45.7% of AI-authored pull requests versus 63.6% of human-authored pull requests (p = 0.007). | This measures validation practices in the studied pull requests; it does not establish that agents are inherently incapable of validating changes. |
| SemOpt (2026) | A benchmark of 151 C/C++ and 150 Python optimization tasks. | The authors report improvements over baseline in successful optimizations across the evaluated models. | Interpret the result within that benchmark’s setup; it does not establish repository-scale performance in deployment. |
Taken together, the findings do not support a blanket verdict that AI either solves optimization or cannot help with it. Early systems produced usable suggestions in a particular setting; newer evaluations expose difficulty achieving reliable gains on broader repository-level tasks. Expert implementations’ strong SWE-Pro results also show that the benchmark tasks contain substantial optimization opportunity, even where current models do not consistently capture it.
How to evaluate an AI-generated optimization
Use the same evaluation discipline for a model-generated patch as for a human performance change. A practical comparison should cover:
Rank #4
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Correctness: Run relevant tests and check the behavior the patch is meant to preserve; passing tests alone may not cover every required case.
- Runtime: Benchmark the target operation or application with representative workloads, recording the baseline and changed version.
- Memory: Track peak memory and, where relevant, memory use over time. A single peak figure may miss differences in how long memory remains allocated.
- Workload variation: Test meaningful input sizes and distributions rather than only one convenient case.
- Execution conditions: Keep compiler, runtime, hardware, and benchmark conditions controlled where possible, and report material differences.
- Repeatability: Repeat runs and consider measurement noise before attributing a small change to the patch.
- Scope and baseline: State whether the task concerns an isolated function or a repository-level change, and compare against compiler and expert-written alternatives where available.
A benchmark that reports only elapsed time can miss a memory regression; one that uses only a single workload can overstate a narrow win. SWE-Pro’s inclusion of runtime, peak memory, and time-weighted memory illustrates a broader approach to measurement, though no single set of metrics fits every application.

What this means for developers
The most defensible role for AI today is as a source of candidate ideas and patches within a measured optimization process. Let it help explore possible changes, then use profiling to confirm that the target is a real bottleneck and benchmarking to determine whether the change improves the workloads that matter. Keep the original implementation available as a baseline and reject a patch that fails correctness checks or produces no repeatable benefit.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.

For teams evaluating tools, distinguish suggestion quality from delivered performance. A system may produce plausible code without finding the repository’s dominant bottleneck, or may optimize a local metric while worsening memory use or behavior on other inputs. The useful question is not simply whether AI can write faster-looking code, but whether the complete workflow can identify, validate, and retain a robust improvement.
