Hollywood studios are experimenting with AI in film production while more people search for movies made without it. But the available search figures show curiosity, not a proven audience backlash: they do not tell us whether searchers avoid AI-assisted films, buy tickets to alternatives, or simply want to know how a movie was made.
What the search figures do—and do not—show
TechRadar reported on October 1, 2026, that Filmustage’s analysis of Google Trends found searches for “movies with no AI” had risen 345% over the past month, while searches for “movies made with AI” rose 112% over the same period. The figures are attributed to Filmustage and reported by TechRadar; the underlying analysis was not independently located. TechRadar’s report and Filmustage’s blog are the cited sources.

Those percentages are not a measure of how many people searched, and the report does not provide the query settings, starting values, geography, or calculation method. Google Trends expresses relative search interest, so a large percentage increase can result from a small baseline. TechRadar also cautions against treating the rise as proof of a broad rejection of AI films. Searches show that people are asking questions; they do not reveal why, or what those people would choose to watch.
The two search phrases point in different directions: people may be seeking AI-made films as well as films without AI. Neither query by itself establishes a preference. No representative viewer survey or viewing-choice data is provided to show whether audiences are turning away from AI-assisted movies.

Hollywood’s AI investment takes different forms
Utopai Studios presents AI as production assistance
Utopai Studios says that in 2026 it brought its research, cinematic workflows, and production technology together in PAI, its “Production Assistive Intelligence” engine. The company also describes an expanded film and television slate that includes Cortés, Half Moon, and The Most Serious Fart. This is the studio’s account of its own work; it does not establish the size of the wider industry’s adoption or independently verify the engine’s results. Utopai Studios’ company page describes the initiative.
The example illustrates one way a studio frames AI: as assistance for production workflows, rather than as a claim that every creative task or performance is generated by a machine. That distinction matters when a viewer asks whether a film was “made with AI”—the answer can depend on which stages and tools they mean.

- It's a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn?t remember him?and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him?sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see.
The Gifted connects an AI trailer to feature development
TechRadar describes The Gifted as an AI-generated trailer that won a competition putting $2.5 million toward developing a feature film. That amount is the figure in TechRadar’s account; the competition organizer’s original announcement was not independently checked. It is a specific reported example, not evidence that AI-generated films are already a dominant Hollywood format. TechRadar’s article provides the report.
What Tom Cruise meant by “There is nothing like human”
Speaking at BAFTA’s Life in Pictures event in London in September 2026, Tom Cruise said, “Here’s the thing: There is nothing like human.” Variety Australia reported that he also acknowledged AI’s growing role in filmmaking, saying it “is coming, and it’s going to happen.” Reuters Connect’s event listing also records the event and the central phrase. Variety Australia’s report and Reuters Connect’s listing document the remarks.

Cruise’s comments are one artist’s view, not a poll of viewers or a statement on behalf of the whole film industry. He linked the value of film to human experience while recognizing that AI use is coming; the remarks do not establish that he opposes every application of the technology.
Why “AI movie” can be an unclear label
The examples span different uses: a studio describes an engine for production assistance, while a competition-winning trailer is described as AI-generated. A viewer asking whether a film was made “with AI” may want to know whether AI was used for writing, images, editing, production planning, or some other stage. The search figures do not specify which uses people had in mind, and the company and competition examples do not supply a shared definition.

That makes transparency more informative than a simple yes-or-no label. A useful account of a film’s production would identify the task AI performed and distinguish it from work done by performers and other human creatives. The available examples do not show whether studios routinely provide that level of disclosure.

| Searches for “movies with no AI” rose 345%, and searches for “movies made with AI” rose 112% over the past month, according to Filmustage figures reported by TechRadar in 2026. | People are searching about AI’s place in movies. | That most viewers oppose AI, that searchers prefer films without AI, or that ticket-buying behavior has changed. |
| Utopai Studios says its 2026 PAI engine brings together research, cinematic workflows, and production technology. | One studio describes AI as a production-assistance approach. | Industry-wide adoption, independently verified results, or a particular audience response. |
| Tom Cruise praised the human element of film and acknowledged AI use is coming, in remarks reported from a September 2026 BAFTA event. | A prominent filmmaker expressed a view about human experience alongside AI’s growing presence. | A consensus among filmmakers or viewers. |
The clearest conclusion is narrower than the article’s headline tension: Hollywood has visible AI-related projects, and search interest in both AI-made and AI-free movies has been reported. The figures do not yet show that audiences as a whole are turning against AI films.
