Smartphones could become the center of personal computing, but they have not been shown to replace PCs for everyone. Samsung DeX demonstrates how a compatible Galaxy phone can power a desktop-like workspace on an external display; whether that setup can stand in for your computer depends on your apps, device, and workflow.
Can a smartphone replace a computer?
For some tasks, a phone can act as the computer: connect a compatible model to a display, add a keyboard and mouse or trackpad, and use a desktop-like interface. Samsung DeX is a current example. Samsung says select Galaxy phones and tablets can connect to an external display and use the phone as a touchpad or keyboard, with connection options that include an HDMI adapter, USB-C cable, or wireless connection. Samsung’s DeX overview notes that features vary by device and software version.
That is not the same as proving that a phone can replace a PC across the board. The available sources do not establish broad user adoption, PC-replacement rates, or parity with specialist desktop software. The practical test is whether your essential apps and tasks work well in the phone environment you plan to use.

What a phone-centered desktop setup can do
DeX is designed to extend a compatible Galaxy device onto a larger display, where windows and desktop-style input can make multitasking more convenient than working on a handset screen. Samsung’s 2024 business account describes workflows using resizable windows, keyboard shortcuts, and drag-and-drop, with the same mobile apps and data moving between field, vehicle, and office settings. That is a vendor-described enterprise use case, not an independent productivity trial or evidence that every organization can eliminate PCs. Samsung Business Insights’ account gives an example of the approach.

The appeal is continuity: one device carries the mobile apps and data into different locations, while an external screen and peripherals provide a more desk-like way to work. The setup still depends on those displays and input devices when you want a desktop workspace; the phone does not make them unnecessary.
What you need to check before using a phone as a PC
- App fit: Check that the apps you rely on are available and usable in the phone’s environment. If your work requires desktop-only software, the reviewed sources do not establish that DeX or a similar phone mode can substitute for it.
- Exact device and software: Confirm support for your specific model and software version. A USB-C connector by itself does not prove that a phone supports wired video output or DeX; Samsung limits DeX to select devices and says features vary by model and software. Start with the DeX device and feature guidance.
- Display connection: Choose a supported wired or wireless connection for your device. If considering an adapter or cable, verify the phone’s display-mode compatibility before buying it; the connector type alone is not enough.
- Input and workspace: Decide whether the phone’s screen and touch controls are adequate or whether your work benefits from a monitor, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad. Samsung documents external-display use and phone-as-input-device options, but the right arrangement depends on the task.
- Where you will connect: Distinguish connecting the phone directly to a display from connecting it to a Windows PC through DeX for PC. They are different workflows with different compatibility guidance.
Direct-to-display DeX versus DeX for PC
Samsung’s US support guidance describes DeX for PC as a USB-cable connection to a computer and says no separate DeX accessory is needed for that particular connection. The same page says DeX for PC is not supported on Galaxy S25 series or other models updated to One UI 7 or later, and points users to Link to Windows instead. This restriction concerns the DeX for PC app; it should not be read as a blanket statement that direct-to-display DeX is unavailable on every one of those phones. Check Samsung’s current DeX for PC guidance and the direct-display support for your exact device before choosing a setup.

Why the smartphone-as-PC idea keeps growing
The case for convergence is straightforward: phones already travel with their owners, and a desktop-like mode can let a compatible phone use a larger screen and familiar peripherals when they are available. Samsung introduced DeX with a mobile-professional vision in 2017, describing the phone as a way to work remotely and present or edit documents. That statement records the company’s original product vision, not independent proof of current productivity or universal suitability. Samsung’s 2017 announcement includes the launch framing.

Gartner forecast that 240 million GenAI smartphones and 54.5 million AI PCs would ship by the end of 2024—22% of their respective smartphone and PC categories. Its combined forecast of 295 million AI PCs and GenAI smartphones, compared with 29 million in 2023, likewise counts two device categories; it does not measure phones displacing PCs. These were forecasts published on February 7, 2024, not a current shipment count or a replacement study. Gartner’s forecast provides the figures and their context.

Who should consider a phone-first setup?
- It may suit you if the work you need is handled by mobile apps, you value carrying one device between locations, and you have access to a compatible display and peripherals when you need a larger workspace.
- Keep a PC in the workflow if essential tasks depend on desktop-only programs, your required phone or software is not supported, or your work cannot be done comfortably with the apps and connections available to you.
Samsung’s field-to-vehicle-to-office example shows how a business might organize a phone-centered workflow, but it is not a measured comparison of representative jobs. There is no evidence here establishing which occupations can eliminate PCs or how phone-versus-PC productivity compares across users.
