Germany’s GICON high-altitude wind turbine in Schipkau, Brandenburg, has reached a total height of 365 metres (about 1,198 feet), making it the world’s tallest wind-energy installation by overall height, according to SPRIND on September 29, 2026. Its hub is 300 metres above ground. The structure has reached its final height, but commissioning was planned for November 2026; the available reports do not confirm that it is operating or generating electricity.
Where is the world’s tallest wind turbine?
The installation stands in Schipkau, in Germany’s Lausitz region in the state of Brandenburg. It is the GICON high-altitude wind tower, a project designed to put a turbine hub much higher above the ground than conventional onshore installations.
SPRIND, Germany’s Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation, reported the project’s final height on September 29, 2026: 365 metres from the ground to the rotor tip, with the hub at 300 metres. The 365-metre figure is the overall installation height, not the hub height.

Reaching its final height is not the same as entering service. SPRIND said commissioning was planned for November 2026. The reports available here do not establish that commissioning took place, that the turbine connected to the grid, or that it has generated electricity. So the accurate status is that the tower reached its reported final height, while operation remains unverified.

How was a 365-metre tower built?
The project used a specialized strand-jack system to raise the inner tower from within the surrounding lattice structure. The foundation and lower lattice mast acted as external support during the lift; the turbine structure itself helped serve as the crane. SPRIND Innovation Manager Dr. Martin Chaumet described the approach this way: “The high-altitude wind turbine serves as its own crane.”
GICON’s project description, published July 16, 2025, says the installation uses more than 2,000 tonnes of steel and 22,000 individual parts. Those figures describe the project’s construction, not a measured performance result.

What output does GICON expect?
Published annual-energy estimates are projections, not results from a turbine in operation, and they differ by source date. GICON’s July 2025 description gave a rating of 3.8 megawatts and forecast at least around 18 million kilowatt-hours per year—enough, by its estimate, for about 6,000 households.
An October 2026 Euronews report by the Associated Press attributed a later projection to GICON of 30–33 gigawatt-hours annually, power for about 7,500 households, and costs below €0.05 per kilowatt-hour. These are reported expectations, not verified generation or realized costs. The sources do not explain the difference between the two forecasts, so they should not be treated as directly comparable operating figures.

Why build a turbine hub 300 metres high?
The project aims to reach wind at greater heights. SPRIND reported that a measurement mast collected wind data for a full year, from May 2023 through May 2024. The project says those observations support the expectation that winds higher up are stronger and more reliable. They help explain the design rationale; they do not demonstrate the turbine’s actual annual electricity production.
SPRIND has also described the high-altitude design as a possible “second tier” for existing wind farms, potentially adding generation on land already in use. Its September 29, 2026 estimate said up to 4,000 such turbines could potentially be retrofitted in existing German wind farms. That is a potential estimate, not a confirmed rollout plan.

How does it compare with other height records?
“Tallest” depends on what is being counted. Schipkau holds the cited overall-height distinction, while another German installation is described by its builders as the tallest serially produced onshore wind turbine. These are different categories, not conflicting records.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| GICON high-altitude wind tower, Schipkau | World’s tallest wind-energy installation by overall height, according to SPRIND, September 29, 2026 | 365 m, including rotor tip | 300 m | 3.8 MW, stated by GICON in July 2025 |
| Vestas installation, Winnberg near Sengenthal | Tallest serially produced onshore wind turbine, according to Max Bögl, September 8, 2026 | 285 m | 199 m | 7.2 MW |
The Sengenthal figures come from Max Bögl’s September 8, 2026 description of the separate Vestas project. Its 285-metre total height is lower than Schipkau’s 365 metres, but the companies’ serial-production category is distinct from the GICON pilot’s overall-height record.

What the height milestone does—and does not—show
Schipkau demonstrates that a turbine tower can be raised to a hub height of 300 metres using a structure that also supports its own construction lift. It also gives the project a clear height milestone. But until commissioning and operating data are reported, claims about delivered annual energy, cost per kilowatt-hour, or household supply remain forecasts rather than demonstrated outcomes.
On reaching the milestone, GICON founder and chairman Prof. Dr. Jochen Großmann said: “365 meters – this is an overwhelming moment for our entire team.”
