As of the June 23, 2026 TOP500 ranking, the world’s fastest supercomputer is LineShine, installed at China’s National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen. El Capitan, the AMD Instinct-powered system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, is No. 2—and remains the fastest supercomputer in the United States.
Which supercomputer is fastest in the world?
TOP500 ranks systems using the High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark. In its June 23, 2026 list, LineShine took the top spot with an HPL Rmax score of 2,198.40 petaflops, or about 2.198 exaflops. El Capitan scored 1,809.00 petaflops, or 1.809 exaflops. Those figures describe performance on HPL, not a universal measure of speed for every scientific or commercial workload.
LineShine is listed at the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen, China. TOP500 describes it as a custom LingKun platform using 304-core LX2 processors, a proprietary LingQi interconnect and Kylin OS. Its HPL result was achieved with 13,789,440 cores. (TOP500 June 2026 list)
How do LineShine and El Capitan compare?
| Specification | LineShine | El Capitan |
|---|---|---|
| June 2026 TOP500 HPL Rmax | 2,198.40 petaflops | 1,809.00 petaflops |
| June 2026 TOP500 HPCG score | 22.00 petaflops | 17.41 petaflops |
| Cores | 13,789,440 | 11,340,000 |
| Platform and processors | Custom LingKun platform; 304-core LX2 processors at 1.55 GHz | HPE Cray EX255a; AMD fourth-generation EPYC 24-core processors at 1.8 GHz |
| Accelerators and interconnect | TOP500 lists a proprietary LingQi interconnect; accelerator details not stated | AMD Instinct MI300A; Slingshot-11 interconnect |
| Operating system | Kylin OS | TOSS |
| Power draw reported by TOP500 | 42,220 kW | 29,685 kW |
| Location | National Supercomputing Centre, Shenzhen, China | Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California, United States |
All system specifications and benchmark figures in the table are from TOP500’s June 2026 list. The HPCG figures offer another benchmark comparison: LineShine also ranks ahead of El Capitan on that list, at 22.00 versus 17.41 petaflops. HPCG measures a different workload from HPL; it does not replace HPL as the basis for TOP500’s headline ranking.

What chips does El Capitan use?
El Capitan combines AMD fourth-generation EPYC processors with AMD Instinct MI300A accelerators in an HPE Cray EX255a system. TOP500 lists its processors as 24-core parts running at 1.8 GHz, alongside the Slingshot-11 interconnect and TOSS operating system. At No. 2 worldwide in June 2026, it is still the highest-ranked U.S. supercomputer in that edition.
Did the United States lose the supercomputer lead?
It lost the No. 1 position in TOP500’s June 2026 HPL ranking: LineShine displaced El Capitan. The distinction is about the ranking and benchmark, not a blanket judgment about every country’s computing capability or every kind of scientific workload. El Capitan remains the top-ranked U.S. system. AMD also powers Frontier, which ranked No. 3 in the same TOP500 edition.

Why do some articles call El Capitan the world’s fastest?
That description was accurate when El Capitan was announced as the world’s fastest supercomputer in November 2024. AMD’s November 18, 2024 announcement reported an HPL result of 1.742 exaflops and highlighted the system’s Instinct MI300A APUs. The U.S. Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration also announced its official verification for national-security stockpile stewardship. Those announcements describe El Capitan’s status at that time, not the June 2026 ranking.
The latest TOP500 list says LineShine, a previously unlisted system in China, debuted at No. 1 and displaced El Capitan as the most powerful system measured by HPL. Readers should therefore attach a date and benchmark to any claim that a machine is “the fastest”: both can change as new systems enter the list.
